  2. 2. According to Brent Jones Faas was chief of photo operations for The Associated Press in Saigon for a decade beginning in 1962, Faas didnt just cover the fighting he also recruited and trained new talent from among foreign and Vietnamese freelancers http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/eye-of- combat-photographer-horst-faas/ Photo by Associated Press
  3. 3. According to the AP :Faas photographed wars, revolutions, the Olympic Games and events in-between. But he was best known for covering Vietnam, where he was severely wounded in 1967 Photo by Horst Faas http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/hor st-faas-the-chronicler-of-vietnam-who-captured- horror-because-he-felt-it-7737833.html In regards to the state of photojournalism, Liam Kennedy said : Korea was the last war that most Americans viewed primarily through photographs in print. By 1962, over 80% of American homes had television and in 1968 over 60% of Americans looked to television for news on the Vietnam war. However, the statistics do not tell us about the conditions of visual news production and its effects. Photojournalism did not quite cede the ground of news representation to television, rather these mediums existed in a relationship of mutual influence.
  4. 4. Photo by Horst Faas http://blogs.denverpost.com/captured/2012/05/15/ph otographer-collection-horst-faas-vietnam/5689/ The director of photography at the Associated press, Santiago Lyon said: Faas was a giant in the world of photojournalism whose extraordinary commitment to telling difficult stories was unique and remarkable.
  5. 5. http://www.ap.org/Content/Press- Release/2012/Exhibit-to-remember-AP- photojournalist-Horst-Faas Photo by AP, Horst Faas with multiple leica cameras In an interview with Terry Gross Faas said: Well, I wasn't the first one to use Leica. Larry Burrows, had considerably more Leicas then I had because at the time AP was still working with large-format cameras and I carried one or two of my own Leicas in there.
  6. 6. According to Adrian Hamilton, Faas once said: "I tried to be in the newspaper every day, to beat the opposition with better photos. Hamilton :That belied a spirit that was anything but uninvolved. If Faas won four major international prizes for his work, including two Pulitzers, it was because he pictured horror with the close-up ferocity of a man who, like McCullin, felt it. (McCullin is also a photographer) Lyons said : Faas was a giant in the world of photojournalism whose extraordinary commitment
  7. 7. "He was an exceptional talent both behind the camera and editing the work of others and even in the grimmest circumstances he always made sure to live life to the fullest," Lyon said. http://www.ap.org/Content/AP-In-The- News/2012/Horst-Faas-AP-combat-photographer- dies-at-79 Photo by AP Kathleen Carroll said "Horst was one of the great talents of our age, a brave photographer and a courageous editor who brought forth some of the most searing images of this century,"He was a stupendous colleague and a warm and generous friend. According to Hamilton : If the world now has a sense of a bitter conflict fought with great brutality and enormous suffering to the civilian population it is thanks in large part to the work of Faas
  8. 8. Photo by Horst Faas,1964 http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/eye-of-combat-photographer- horst-faas/7/ In this photograph, a man is pictured holding is son, who was killed. He is looking up to South Vietnamese fighters. For this image I chose . It is clear that the subject, the father and son are off center and not in the middle of the image. I also chose because the subjects In the front are clear and in focus whereas the background is faded and focused out and hard to make out. Lastly I chose , because it just saddens anyone who takes a look at it, its a very powerful image and of course an image of a child who was killed.
  9. 9. Photo by Horst Faas, January 1965 http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/horst- faas-the-chronicler-of-vietnam-who-captured-horror- because-he-felt-it-7737833.html?action=gallery&ino=1 For this image I chose, . I chose this because of the obvious sunshine that is coming through the jungle. The subjects are sitting down and the light shining through just brings out the photo, and brightens up a rather horrible situation that the fighters are in. I also chose Although its hard to tell the subjects seemed relaxed and one seems like he is tired. The the image, the sunlight brings on a greater mood. Their obviously having a bad day and the sun creates a greater mood.

  11. 11. Photo by Horst Faas, March 1965. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/peop le/news/horst-faas-the-chronicler-of- vietnam-who-captured-horror-because- he-felt-it- 7737833.html?action=gallery&ino=16 The obvious main subject of this image is the helicopters hovering above, they take up most of the image. The soldiers look almost as big as the helicopters. The feelings that this image creates is more sadness. The soldiers seem to be getting ready to charge into battle.
  12. 12. Faas wanted to take photos of things that werent able to be seen by the civilian eye, thanks to him and many other photojournalists of that era, we have images of Vietnam that tell us stories, and show us what soldiers and the Vietnamese went through. According to the AP :Horst Faas didn't just cover the fighting - he also recruited and trained new talent from among foreign and Vietnamese freelancers. Photo by AP, pictured :Horst Faas http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/horst-faas-the- chronicler-of-vietnam-who-captured-horror-because-he-felt-it- 7737833.html?action=gallery&ino=17 Horst Faas, a prizewinning combat photographer who carved out new standards for covering war with a camera and became one of the worlds distinguished photojournalists in nearly a half- century
  13. 13. Horst gave opportunities to others and helped them. He offered them jobs as his freelance photographers and created an army of them. As a nursing major we are taught to help others and have passion. Although passion cant be taught, because you must have it in you, much like Faas. http://www.nursingprograms.com/wp- content/uploads/2013/05/nurse-or-md.jpg
