FACTS AS WELL

The jumping position

The jumping position is very important and can be practised over small jumps and poles.

Having your heels down and head up is some of the things you have to do while jumping and also general riding. Your leg should not be to far back or forward.

It may help to use a neck strap when trying to jump higher jumps.

This is the correct position over a jump.

There is 5 parts of jumping the first is approach. The approach is the final canter stride before the

take off which is when the horse places all his legs in correct places to prepare himself for take-off

As you can see this horse is taking his final stride before take-off

Approach

Take-offThe next phase of jumping is take-

off.The take off begins after the horse

has taken his last stride and his front legs have left the ground.

This is a horse during take-off.

Mid air/flight The next phase is the mid air or flight stage were all the

horses legs are of the ground. This is when the horses need something called bascule

which is an rounded form of jumping that horses develop after being trained to jump properly. It also helps the horse to clear the jump by jumping higher.

This is a photo of a horse in the flight phase.

LandingThe 4th phase is landing. The horse lands with his non-leading front leg and

then his leading when he lands. After he has landed with his front legs he then

puts his back legs down. This puts lots of strain on the back legs and can cause lameness or injures‘

This is a photo of a horse during landing.

The getawayThe getaway is the last stage of jumping. It is the first stride after the jump were

the horse rebalances and prepares for the next jump.

This is a photo of a horse during getaway.

Types of jumping

There are many types of jumping you can do.The first type is show jumping which is a set course

around colourful poles on standards. In show jumping if you clear the first round then you

normally do a second round called a jump-off were some of the jumps are taken out.

Penalties are given for refusals knocking down a jump and going over the time limit.

Cross country The next type of jumping is called cross country were horses jump

solid fences in a felid. All riders walk the course like in other jumping events. Penalties are given for going outside the time limit and refusals. Cross country courses are part of a series of tests which includes

three disciplines xc show jumping and dressage. If you are new to cross country and live in the UK you can also do jump cross which has poles you can knock down on a xc terrain like course.

They are normally around 6 km long for proper intermediate level courses and up.

Here are some photos of horses jumping xc.

Show hunter The next type of jumping is show hunter. It is based on the horse and rider in hunting felid and they must

show many of the qualities and manners hunters have in the show ring.

The show hunter should have a balanced frame and be on the bit softly. The show hunter pony should have a flowing trot slightly collected canter and a long galloping stride around 12 feet is the excepted length.

The show hunter should have its front legs tucked it should also Cleary bend it fetlocks and knees. The horse should perfectly straight over the fence the horse should also have good bascule.

The rider and horses turn out is very important and these photos show a nice turn out.
