2 Hornby-with-Farleton Parish Council – Thursday 3rd May Meeting
The AGM was held before the regular monthly meeting. Peter Norris gave his Chairman’s annual report where he thanked the clerk and reflected upon money well spent on improvements to the playground and the land to the rear of Station Court. Joanna Castaldi was appointed as the Chairman & Jacque Lloyd as Vice Chairman for the year 2018-2019. The PC will continue to push the Highways department to improve the poor surfacing at Butt Yeats junction. The poor state of the road is making the junction even more dangerous than normal, please do take care. Lancashire County Council has confirmed that an ‘appropriate replacement’ for the damaged street light on the bridge has been ordered and will be in place as soon as possible. The meeting in June has been changed and will now be held on 7th June. The agenda will be placed in the Parish notice boards on Monday 4th June. Swimming Pool Opening Delayed
This is a bitter blow. We “have” the pool, but it is still leaking and needs much further attention by the Council/contractors.
Trials to locate the leaks are ongoing and the actual size is as yet unknown. The refurbishment project is inevitably slowed down and we
are unable to give a firm date for the re-opening.
We sincerely apologise yet again to all our supporters and volunteers for this frustrating situation’

Singing group (The Hornby SIngers).
The Hornby Singers returned after the Easter break to find that our musical director has been working on adapting a number of new (to us) musical pieces. As singers it is always exciting to be offered new music to
learn but often presents a challenge especially when it is something that you think you know. That said we attack it with gusto and have a great deal of fun learning our parts. New members always welcome. We meet each Tuesday from 7.00pm -9.00pm in Hornby Institute.
Fundraising for Hornby Institute
The institute always needs money to cover its running costs and replacement of capital items. To get this money we have lot of events and apply to grant giving trusts. The demands on these trusts is such that we are often turned down for a grant. We recently applied for a grant to pay for new dish washers as the existing ones are old and need repairs. We did not get a grant from any of the trust we applied to. We therefore need approximately £5,000.00 to re-place the dishwashers in the two kitchens. Rotary Club of Lunesdale On Thursday May 3rd the club celebrated its 43rd Charter Anniversary Dinner at Bentham Golf Club. This special date in the club's calendar was attended by 76 people. Guests included the District Governor Larry Branyan, Presidents and Rotarians from other Rotary Clubs plus family and friends. The meal was excellent and enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere with lots of chat and laughter. Guest speaker was Sam Boatwright who is famous for his epic running and cycling events in both the UK and the USA. Sam's humorous after dinner speech about his epic adventures had the audience enthralled. To date Sam has raised over £35,000 for "Help For Heroes" which the club has donated to. Llanddulas Male Voice Choir - Date for your diary Saturday, 22nd September The club is proud to announce it will host a visit from the Llanddulas Male Voice Choir who will be in concert in St. Mary's church Kirkby Lonsdale at 7pm. Under the musical directorship of Eirlys Dwyryd, an accomplished pianist and harpist, the choir will entertain with a programme full of variety, making this a unique and unforgettable experience. Tickets, priced £10, are limited and will be on sale from the Tourist Information shop Kirkby Lonsdale from the beginning of July. We are confident that this concert will be very well supported so please do not delay in buying your tickets when they come on sale. The club has a quantity of bulbs to donate to community groups within our area who are willing to plant them in public places where the necessary permission for the planting has been obtained. The planting of purple crocus corms in flower in Jubilee Park, Kirkby Lonsdale, provide a delightful display each Spring. Floral displays can be replicated in other areas in villages throughout the Lune valley with a little time and enthusiasm. 13 Hornby St. Margaret’s Mothers’ Union We’ve had two excellent meetings since my last report! In April we visited the House of Prayer at Tunstall and were very warmly welcomed and looked after by Sister Sue and Sister Judith. We took the annual theme ‘In Mary Sumner’s Footsteps’ as our focus and every
member present made a footprint which represented their journey in life. These will be made up into a wall hanging to be displayed in church. We plan to build on this topic at our September meeting. Many thanks to the sisters for all their support and for a very enjoyable afternoon. On the 16th of May, we were joined by friends from Kirkby Lonsdale Church and St. Margaret’s Church for a coach outing to Blackburn Ca-thedral. For some it was their first visit to this beautiful building! On arrival we were served a lovely lunch of soup, sandwiches and cake in the crypt. We then went to listen to an amazing organ recital of JS Bach’s music by Shaun Turnbull, the Assistant Director of Music at the cathedral. We had a very close up view as the organ is ‘mobile’ and was placed very close to the seating! I had no idea there was such foot work involved, he was virtually dancing across the wooden struts of the ped-als. The density of notes on the page was mind boggling! After a few minutes break we met one of the Vergers, Mark who gave us a very in-teresting and entertaining talk and tour of the cathedral. There are some beautiful works of art and the ‘lantern’ in the centre means that the build-ing is flooded with sunlight diffused through the coloured glass. We fin-ished the tour by going into the garden/courtyard area between the main building and the accommodation which was full of lovely blooms and very sunny. Our coach was extremely comfortable and driver Dan Wil-lan very attentive to the mobility needs of our group making the journey a pleasant part of the excursion. On the 20th of June we will be attending the Deanery Festival Service and refreshments at St. John’s Church, Silverdale. The service starts at 6:30pm and lifts will be available from Hornby. Lune Valley Lancaster Days for Girls Whilst there are no sewing network meetings over the summer work goes on behind the scenes. I recently went up to Brampton to meet with the UK lead and try out the Accquilt machine for cutting out shields. My large pile of fabric (kindly donated by Christine at Temptations of Bentham), was rapidly converted into a large pile of shield shapes. I caught up on the global and UK Days for Girls ‘scenes’, picked up 100 + pairs of knickers donated by Scottish charity ‘Smalls for All’ and purchased flip charts for use by CRMI in Uganda. I also had a lovely outdoor lunch! I have received another £100 donation from Preston Soroptomists and various items from Bolton – le – Sands WI, to whom I am going to talk to in June. I have been asked to help with the Arnside’s group’s order for Zambia and as we had two satellite groups producing kits last year we are able to hand over 20 – 30 kits to support this request and ensure the aid workers have the supplies they need. All this is thanks to the continued support of our little gang and friends. There will be a UK conference in May of next year and this may be of interest to any-one interested in women’s health/global issues.

15 Roberts Family Fund Raising This year, on the 28th of July I will be attempting to run ‘The Lakeland 50’ to raise money for Macmillan cancer support. Working in film production I was recently asked to edit a film for Macmillan focusing on a side of cancer that I’d never thought about before - the financial consequences of dealing with cancer.
We probably all know a friend or family member who has suffered from cancer, I myself lost my uncle Chris to a brain tumour, my uncle Steve to bowel cancer and my great uncle (and Godfather) Peter to prostate cancer so I’m familiar with what an awful disease it is. One thing that completely took me by surprise however, is how devastating it can be financially. Having cancer puts you in a position where you're unable to work (and earn money) but your cost of living goes up dramatically, for example paying for regular trips to hospital (parking, petrol, train tickets etc) or increased energy bills to cover the cost of being housebound. What is the Lakeland 50? It is a 50 mile ultra marathon running race in the Lake District. Almost double the length of a conventional marathon it climbs 3100m across rough terrain. There is a 24 hour time limit to complete the race and you have to navigate yourself using a map and compass. The furthest I’ve ever ran before is 27.5 miles - so this is a huge challenge for me. My training involves running 3 to 5 times and 2 gym session’s week. I also do a lot of physiotherapy and injury prevention work and eat mammoth amounts of healthy food to keep me going. I estimate I will have run about 850 miles in training before the race including the Coniston14 and 2 of the infamous hard moors trail marathons. 1 in 2 people will get cancer, so please dig deep and donate for Macmillan, or if you can't afford to give even £1, please share this linkhttps://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/willslakeland50: with as many people as you can. We will be raising money for student minds, a mental health charity targeted specifically at students and the Bradford soup run, a local charity helping our homeless community. children’s faces when they found out that they had won was priceless! Well done to you all.

is a picture made up of words shaped like the thing that the words are describing”. Ben’s ex-
ample of a car is below. What a great way of linking new vocabulary and art.
The juniors have also been learning all about California. They have explored the challenges of
the Gold Rush and discovered the vast range of Californian environments. Amelia has done a
great job of persuading us to visit

Our trip to Manchester and the Lowry had something for everyone. A super day out on a lovely Summer day. I will report back on our next trip which is on the 17th of May to Lytham and Dob-bies Garden centre in the next issue. We have a visit to Dumfries and the Gretna outlet for our trip out on Thursday the 21st of June. Pick up at 9am at the Victoria Institute then on to pick up in Brook-house. For pick up in Hornby please call our secretary. If you would like to join the Friendship Club, enjoy the company of other members, come with us on the trips in summer and attend the organised events in the Victoria Institute during the Winter. For further infor-mation call our secretary Benita on 01524 771943 CATON THEATRE INTEREST GROUP We all enjoyed a beautiful sunny day in Blackpool and a fantastic presentation of ‘Legally Blonde’ the talent and energy in the singing and dancing was superb. We came out of the theatre buzzing saying ‘ follow that’ Our next venture is to the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick on Saturday September 1st to see a matinee performance of ‘Single Spies’ a comedy by Alan Bennett. Cost for a seat in the circle (there is a lift) and coach is £25.00 to be booked and paid by the 15th of July. Please book early to avoid disappointment. Our pantomime this Christmas is a matinee performance, on Saturday January 5th 2019 of Beauty and the Beast. We have reserved good seats near the front of the dress circle. Miles-Moore Ceramics have won Best Creative Business at the
Cumbria Family Business Awards.
Miles-Moore Ceramics is based in Kirkby Lonsdale and is the brainchild of married couple Martin and Siobhan, who live in Hornby. With more than 30 years of experience, the couple have two very significant styles in the work they create. The business is already supplying fine dining ware to some of the best chefs across the north of England, and looking across the UK to add to their portfolio. The business also sells teabowls and sculpture across the world with work featuring in a number of galleries and sold to many countries. Working with customers to integrate local materials, minerals, metals and wood ashes, a sense of place is always within each piece created. Miles-Moore Ceramics was crowned winners of the Creative Business award at the Cumbria Family Business Awards. The judges said: "A genuinely creative business, constantly exploring and innovating” Siobhan said "It was an honour to be shortlisted against such great businesses within our county." Morecambe Bay Food Bank
Morecambe Bay Foodbank is a project founded by local churches and com-munity groups, working together towards stopping hunger in our local area. It is situated at The West End Community Centre on Westminster Road in More-cambe. We receive and distribute over four tonnes of food each month and our operation has been growing since its inception in 2013.
The Food Bank is open for donations on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10 and 12p.m. There are donation points at Sainsbury’s Tesco and ASDA.
Our Foodbank manager is Annette Smith and over forty volunteers work at the Foodbank each week to process and distribute food.
