Landing Pads for Term 2 will take place this month.
Details to follow soon.
Year 4 are off to Temburong on
their residential trip from
14th-17th March. We wish them
an exciting outdoor learning experience and a successful trip.
All Year 5 and Year 6 parents are cordially invited to
attend a meeting on 17th March at 1700 hours in
the Multi-Purpose Hall. The meeting will focus on
secondary schooling in the UK in preparation for the
Unit Move next year. We will share some important
information with you and there will be plenty of
opportunities to ask questions. So, please do come along.
On Monday 7th March we
are launching our Book Week
and would like to invite your
children to dress up as a
favourite character from a
book that day. There will be prizes awarded in
assembly so get your thinking caps on and
impress us with your imaginative ideas!
We are excitedly awaiting the arrival of
Reading Force and their roadshow and know
that the children are going to have a wonderful
week. On Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th
March we will be giving you the opportunity to
come and meet the Reading Force team and
receive one of their scrapbooks for their
upcoming competition. This meeting will take
place at 1345hours. We are very pleased to
announce that during the course of the week,
children will be given a book written by one of
the authors and these afternoon sessions are
also an opportunity for your child to get their
book signed by the authors. Please come
along and support these meetings on
whichever day suits you best.
Alison Baverstock and Elaine
Boorman from Reading Force along
with Tom Palmer and Miriam Moss
who are both very popular children’s
authors will be at Hornbill the whole week working across the
school with children and teachers to promote the love of reading
and writing which also ties in really well with Book Week.
More than 100 children (15 teams) took part in the Panaga
Football Funday on Sunday 28th February and what a superb
performance by our teams! Many congratulations and well
done to all our children and team managers especially to Year
1, Year 2 and Year 5 (girls) teams who won champion
trophies in their age group. A big thank you to all the adults who came to
support our teams or help by managing the teams on that day.

Foundation Stage 1 have welcomed a number of new children to the year group this term. They have all settled in well to life at school and are enjoying taking part in a wide range of activities and exploring their new environment.
FS2 are currently investigating Africa and have loved listening to the story Handa’s Surprise. They had a very enjoyable Chinese New Year Launch Pad – thank you to all of the parents who came and supported this. The ‘Right Royal Affair’ theme is continuing to inspire our Year 1 children. They have been investigating the role of knights and designing and making their own weapons and armour. Our whole phase are really looking forward to Reading Force visiting us in March and can’t wait to meet Miriam Moss an author who will be working with all of the children in the phase.

A fabulous response to Parents Consultations. Thank you. It was great to see so many parents and lovely to see and hear the children contributing to their learning in
the Pupil Conferencing books. We have had a busy few weeks in Phase Two including a visit from a giant tortoise in Year 3. This was all part of the Year 2 theme and learning all about the animals and wildlife from the Galapagos Islands. Year 3 will be looking towards the skies for the partial solar eclipse as part of their them on Space. Pupils from Year 4 represented their year group extremely well in the recent swimming gala. Their talent, enthusiasm and sportsmanship really shone through. Very well done!

Thank you to all parents for
showing your great support during
our Parent Consultations recently.
It was wonderful to have so many
children joining the meeting so we can all share in their
learning journey by supporting every child.
It was also wonderful to see the fantastic efforts of our
children during the swimming gala. All children did
extremely well and it was a great opportunity to
showcase the skills that they have. Well done all!
Lastly, we look forward to a very rare event! There is a
partial solar eclipse that will occur on March 9th. Our
watches have been primed for 0837 hours when the
eclipse should occur! Children have been learning all
about the science behind the event as a great build up.
Awesome!

Walk the plank was a huge success.
The pupils’ voice was heard! I’m not sure we’ll be seeing Mr Burgess
around here for a while (What a great sport he was!)
In a strange twist of events, Mrs Hunter was also made to walk the plank!
Well done to the School Council for
their efforts in organising the
Valentines Disco. All who attended
had great fun with some
awesome dance moves on display.

The Hello - Goodbye Club The Children and Staff at Hornbill School say a fond farewell to the following ...
...and welcome the following to Hornbill School.
Sadly we bid farewell to Mr Burgess. We will all miss his cheerful, caring and positive
outlook that he brings to every day here at Hornbill. We wish him all the best for his future.
Also we bid farewell to Rubica Rai from FS2, Brodie Burgess FS1 and Erin Burgess Year 1 who
have left Brunei with their families. We will miss them and wish them all the very best for their
future.
We extend a warm welcome to our new children Roselyn Sambahamphe who has joined us in
FS 1, Ritima Tamanh in FS 2 and Davin Borromeo in Year 1. Hope they will enjoy their time
in Hornbill School.
Family Learning
Programme
Great changes have taken place in the National Curriculum
with regards to Mathematics. Our next FLP session on
Tuesday 8th March will focus on these changes and we will
have interesting strategies to share with you from 1700-1745
hours at the Multi Purpose Hall for our Year 1-Year 6 parents.
So, please do come along.
Healthy life-style is one of the key factors to happy life and it is
always better to start early. That is why we are focusing on
healthy life-style at our FLP session on Tuesday 15th March
for our FS1 and FS2 parents from 1700-1745 hours at the
Multi Purpose Hall. Please come along because we are going
to share a lot of interesting information with parents and there
will also be plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Amazing Earth Facts
Parents taking an active role in science at the Family Learning Programme.
Years 3, 4 and 5 visiting
the Health Fair at the
Garrison Gym Hall.
On Wednesday 9th March, there will
be a partial solar eclipse. Special
eclipse glasses are available for
purchase for $3 each from the school
office. Years 2-6 will meet on the
Sports Pitch after registration.
A solar eclipse happens when the
Moon moves between the Sun and the
Earth, blocking the Sun's rays and
casting a shadow on the Earth. It
should be quite a sight and an event
not to be missed!
The volcanic rock known as pumice is the only rock that can float in water.
Natural gas doesn't have an odour, strong smells are added to it by humans so it can be detected when there are leaks.
Scientists have the dated the Earth as being between 4 and 5 billion years old!
Most of Antarctica is covered in ice
over 1.6 kilometres thick (1 mile).
Scientists believe that there may be millions of plant and
insect species in rainforests that have yet to be discovered.

School uniform update - a gentle reminder (please refer to our Parents’ Handbook www.hornbillschool.com/
phb1516.pdf for full information regarding uniform)
Children need to have suitable footwear for school, well fitting shoes, fastened with laces, buckles or velcro, without pointed
toes or high heels (no higher than 3cm). The modern heavily built type of trainers are not suitable for PE activities for
children whose feet are still growing.
Please note that Crocs and flip-flops are not accepted as suitable foot-wear, as they do not provide enough grip when
children use the play equipment or while running.
If your child has long hair, please see that it is tied up so that it does not impede their vision. Hair should look be of natural
colour and bright dyes should not be used unless authorised by the Headteacher as part of a fund-raising event. For health
and safety reasons, we encourage all children to wear school caps while outside during break-times and other outdoor
activities.
No jewellery, other than a watch, is permitted. However, in the interests of safety and because a great deal of time is wasted
looking for lost items. If parents wish their child to have pierced ears, only studs are permitted but must be removed by the
parents/child on days of PE, Games and swimming. School cannot be held responsible for injuries incurred from the wearing
of earrings.
We do not encourage children to wear nail polish or wrist bands unless the Garrison / school / country are celebrating a
particular event and the wrist band supports this – such as poppy appeal or ABF charity week and so on.
Kind co-operation and support from parents in this matter will be most appreciated.
