GeneralDescriptionThe Series TY-FRB, 5.6,and 8.0 K-fac-tor, Extended Coverage HorizontalSidewall Sprinklers are extended cov-erage, decorative 3 mm glass bulbtype spray sprinklers designed for usein hydraulically calculated sprinklersystems in light hazard, commercialoccupancies such as churches, res-taurant seating areas, hotels, educa-tional facilities, offices, etc. With theircoverage up to 16 feet (4,9 m) wide by24 feet (7,3 m) long, they are designedfor installation along a wall or the sideof a beam and just beneath a smoothand level ceiling. Horizontal sidewallsprinklers are commonly used insteadof pendent or upright sprinklers due toaesthetics or building constructionconsiderations, where piping acrossthe ceiling is not desirable.

The fast response thermal sensitivityrating of the Series TY-FRB, 3 mmBulb Type Sprinklers provides for aquick response extended coverage(QREC) rating for many of the cover-age areas detailed in Tables B and C.

The recessed version of the SeriesTY-FRB Extended Coverage Horizon-tal Sidewall Sprinkler utilizes either atwo-piece Style 10 (1/2 inch NPT) orStyle 40 (3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Es-cutcheon with 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of

recessed adjustment or up to 3/4 inch(19,1 mm) of total adjustment from theflush sidewall position, or a two-pieceStyle 20 (1/2 inch NPT) or Style30 (3/4inch NPT) Recessed Escutcheon with1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjust-ment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of

total adjustment from the flush side-wall position. The adjustment providedby the Recessed Escutcheon reducesthe accuracy to which the fixed pipelengths to the sprinklers must be cut.

Corrosion resistant coatings, whereapplicable, are utilized to extend thelife of copper alloy sprinklers beyondthat which would otherwise be ob-tained when exposed to corrosive at-mospheres. Although corrosion resis-tant coated sprinklers have passed thestandard corrosion tests of the appli-cable approval agencies, the testing isnot representative of all possible cor-rosive atmospheres. Consequently, itis recommended that the end user beconsulted with respect to the suitabilityof these coatings for any given corro-sive environment. The effects of ambi-ent temperature, concentration ofchemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of thechemical to which the sprinklers will beexposed.

WARNINGSThe Series TY-FRB Sprinklers de-scribed herein must be installed andmaintained in compliance with thisdocument, as well as with the applica-ble standards of the National Fire Pro-tection Association, in addition to thestandards of any other authorities hav-ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so mayimpair the performance of these de-vices.

The owner is responsible for maintain-ing their fire protection system and de-vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinklermanufacturer should be contactedwith any questions.

OperationThe glass Bulb contains a fluid which

expands when exposed to heat. Whenthe rated temperature is reached, thefluid expands sufficiently to shatter theglass Bulb, allowing the sprinkler toactivate and water to flow.

DesignCriteriaThe Series TY-FRB Extended Cover-age Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklersmust be installed and utilized in LightHazard Occupancies, under smoothlevel ceilings as outlined in the appli-cable installation standard recognizedby the Approval Agency (e.g., UL rec-ognizes NFPA 13, and FM recognizesthe FM Loss Prevention Data Sheets).Only the Style 10, 20, 30, or 40 Re-cessed Escutcheon, as applicable, isto be used for recessed installations.

TABLE C, UL AND C-UL LISTING COVERAGE AND FLOW RATE CRITERIA

    NOTES

    1. Backwall (where sprinkler is located) by sidewall (length of throw).

    2. Requirement is based on minimum flow in GPM from each sprinkler. The indicted residual pressures are based on the nominalK-factor.

    3. The centerline of the sprinkler waterway is located 7/16 inch (11,1 mm) below the deflector (Ref. Figures 1 and 2).

    4. Miinimum spacing is for lateral distance between sprinklers located along a single wall. Otherwise adjacent sprinklers (i.e., sidewallsprinklers on an adjacent wall, on an opposite wall, or pendent sprinklers) must be located outside of the maximum listed protectionarea of the extended coverage sidewall sprinkler being utilized.

    5. Minimum spacing is 13 feet (4,0 m) when design pressure exceeds 175 psi (12,1 bar), otherwise the minimum spacing is10 feet (3,1 m).

InstallationThe Series TY-FRB Sprinklers mustbe installed in accordance with the fol-lowing instructions:

    NOTES

Do not install any bulb type sprinkler ifthe bulb is cracked or there is a loss ofliquid from the bulb. With the sprinklerheld horizontally, a small air bubbleshould be present. The diameter of theair bubble is approximately 1/16 inch(1,6 mm).

A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 7to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi-mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torquemay be used to install sprinklers with1/2 NPT connections. A leak tight 3/4inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob-tained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs.

(13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maximum of 30ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque is to be usedto install sprinklers with 3/4 NPT con-nections. Higher levels of torque maydistort the sprinkler inlet and causeleakage or impairment of the sprinkler.

Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi-cient adjustment in the escutcheonplate by under- or over-tightening thesprinkler. Readjust the position of thesprinkler fitting to suit.

The Series TY-FRB EC SidewallSprinklers must be installed in ac-cordance with the following instruc-tions.

Step 1. Horizontal sidewall sprinklersare to be installed with their centerlineperpendicular to the back wall and par-allel to the ceiling. The word TOP onthe deflector is to face towards theceiling.

Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tightenthe sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 7).With reference to Figures 1 and 2, theW-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench is to beapplied to the sprinkler wrench flats.

The Series TY-FRB Recessed ECSidewall Sprinklers must be installedin accordance with the following in-structions.

Step A. Horizontal sidewall sprinklersare to be installed with their centerlineperpendicular to the back wall and par-allel to the ceiling. The word TOP onthe deflector is to face towards theceiling.

Step B. After installing the Style 10.20, 30, or 40 Mounting Plate, as appli-

cable, over the sprinkler threads andwith pipe thread sealant applied to thepipe threads, hand tighten the sprin-kler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step C. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref.

Figure 8). With reference to Figure 1or 2, the W-Type 7 RecessedSprinklerWrench is to be applied to the sprinklerwrench flats.

Step D. After the wall has been in-stalled or the finish coat has been ap-plied, slide on the Style 10, 20, 30, or40 Closure over the Series TY-FRBSprinkler and push the Closure overthe Mounting Plate until its flangecomes in contact with the wall.

    Care and

MaintenanceThe Series TY-FRB Sprinklers mustbe maintained and serviced in accord-ance with the following instructions:

NOTESBefore closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection system thatit controls, permission to shutdown theaffected fireprotection system must beobtained from the proper authoritiesand all personnel who may be affectedby this action must be notified.

The owner must assure that the sprin-klers are not used for hanging of anyobjects; otherwise, non-operation inthe event of a fire or inadvertent opera-tion may result.

Absence of an escutcheon, which isused to cover a clearance hole, maydelay the time to sprinkler operation ina fire situation.

Sprinklers that are found to be leakingor exhibiting visible signs of corrosionmust be replaced.

Automatic sprinklers must never bepainted, plated, coated or otherwisealtered after leaving the factory. Modi-

f ied sprinklers must be replaced.Sprinklers that have been exposed tocorrosive products of combustion, buthave not operated, should be replacedif they cannot be completely cleanedby wiping the sprinkler with a cloth orby brushing it with a soft bristle brush.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam-aged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must be re-placed. Also, replaceany sprinkler thathas a cracked bulb or that has lost

liquid from its bulb. (Ref. InstallationSection).

Frequent visual inspections are rec-ommended to be initially performed forcorrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com-pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor-

rosion resistant coating. Thereafter, annual inspect ions per NFPA 25should suffice; however, instead of in-specting from the floor level, a randomsampling of close-up visual inspec-tions should be made, so as to betterdetermine the exact sprinkler condi-tion and the long term integrity of thecorrosion resistant coating, as it maybe affected by the corrosive conditionspresent.

The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-

ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), inaddition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction. The in-stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-facturer should be contacted relativeto any questions.

It is recommended that automaticsprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualifiedInspection Service in accordance withlocal requirements and/or nationalcodes.
