Message from the Founder & MD

I wish to start this note by complementing all those who

contributed in making the new Horizons an excellent platform for

communication. It gives me immense pleasure to see the A2Z

family actively involved in leveraging this highly effective

communication tool. In any organization, Effective

Communication is important as it creates a very healthy

understanding and a vibrant relationship between the

management and the employees.

This issue aims to highlight critical importance of Human

Resources in any organization. An organization can only excel

through its human resource - individuals who are passionate and

intellectually curious about their work. They gain experience

employing the theories and use the knowledge to perform better

and subsequently train and develop others. They are the most

valuable asset of any organisation.

As you read on, the “Stop Press” and “Group Updates” will inform

you about the national developments and “Global Footprints” will

update you on our successful forays in international markets.

In this issue, we have included three new sections. Straight talk

which carries experiences of A2Z personnel sharing their

experiences, their moments of pride, honour and glory. The IT

Section talks about the various technology implementations

taking place within the organisation. Further, we have added CSR

Section to discuss the all important social responsibility issues that

are so close to the Group’s Vision.

I am sure you will also enjoy this month's Book Review on

“Imagining India: IDEAS FOR THE NEW CENTURY” by Nandan

Nilekani. I salute the spirit in which Nandan Nilekani gave up his

corporate career at his peak and decided to deploy his experience

and intellect for the betterment of the nation.

I urge everyone to actively participate and make Horizons an even

bigger success. You can reach me at and I

shall be glad to share my views / comments.

Happy reading!

Group Updates

Integrated Performance Management System

The management has taken an HR initiative to implement “Integrated Performance Management System” across

the entire group. The ball has been set rolling by defining Vision, Mission, Values and goals of each SBU and the

entire group. The former will be followed by creating the organizational structure for each SBU, further followed by

job descriptions for each role which in turn would define individual Key Result Areas (KRAs) & Key Performance

Indicators (KPIs).

The new IT-enabled performance management system would be half yearly i.e. from 1st April – 30th September

and 1st October – 31st March and it would evaluate an individual based on these KRAs/KPIs. This structured

approach adopted by the Management /HR Team will bring out clarity at all levels in terms of the Business and the

approach to meet targets. The performance of the employees will be measured against the predefined KRAs/KPIs of

the individual… thereby making it a fair and transparent system.

This PMS system is proposed to be launched by first week of October 2010.

Waste Management – Better processes through technology

The IT Team at A2Z Group has successfully developed a very unique online web application for Billing Activity of

solid waste collection from households in various cities (municipality and/or corporations) undertaken by a2z

Infrastructure.

As you are aware, a2z Infrastructure is engaged in door-to-door municipal waste collection and with the help of this

application software, we can effectively bill the individual household.

Workflow starts with collection of household information, in which we collect information for each household

under our operational area. The information captured are - complete billing address, landmark, contact number

(preferably mobile number), number of family members, etc.

A team of market research professionals is working with us to collect the required information. Another team

validates the data by cross checking the collected information by the previous team.

The Data Entry Operators at each operational site are responsible for entering household information into the

application software and generating unique household ID for billing purpose.

The application generates billing and transfers it to the handheld device for the collection team which initiates the

process for door-to-door billing. Post which, the information is synchronised back to the application from hand-

held devices and is subsequently used to generate various reports.

This process is already operational in Patna and is soon to be launched in Varanasi and other operational sites. The

billing is done quarterly with the help of the registered data.

Incidentally, the Municipal Corporation of Varanasi is impressed with the handheld device process and is keen to

adopt the same for various Municipal Corporation Tax collection purposes. We have got approval for billing

starting August 2010 based on a successful demonstration of application to the Municipal Commissioner of

Varanasi.

Benefits to the organization1. Monitoring the complete life cycle of billing and collection process

2. Complete household information of each operational city

3. Instant invoicing, payment tracking, live reporting, etc

Management Quotient

Real leader commands respect

Imagine coming to office one day to discover that all

designations have ceased to exist and you are forced to

live in an environment where people are no longer

identified by hierarchies or positions?

Would you still be able to command the same respect

among your subordinates and colleagues?

Would they still work for you?

I believe that is the true test of leadership. Most people mistakenly assume that leadership is

about being at top of the hierarchy, adorning a

designation of respect. The belief is that by being in

these positions, they are able to direct people and

influence them. However, reality is far from being so!

Mostly, they are exceptionally good managers

specialized in the technical aspect of business. They

are able to see the organization through a filter of their

technical expertise, as a system designed for better

output focusing more on things like physical assets,

processes and systems. People are not in the focus here

but they are just another means to achieve better

efficiencies. As people are pushed back to the

periphery, they work not out of allegiance to their

senior, but because they do not have a choice.

So how do you

move in to the

position of being a

real leader?

The first step is to understand that beyond a mere

designation, leadership is a matter of having right

attitude. An attitude that puts people above all the

physical infrastructure and processes and considers

them as critical resource for all activities. For a real

leader, people are not just the means to achieve an

end. Under true leadership, employees are not doing

their jobs because they ought to, but because they are

motivated to and because they are passionate about it.Good leadership is also about having a strong

commitment. Yes, it is difficult to put people at the

centre of an organization, and even more difficult to

practice this consistently. Many leaders fail to achieve

this objective. There are times when they start

focusing on people, however, when the rubber hits the

road, this commitment wears off, and they go back to

their old ways to concentrate on processes and

systems. Unfortunately, this would leave the leader in

a much worse position than from where he or she

started. When people get the miserable feeling that they had

been selfishly and temporarily used to achieve a

certain objective, they tend to lose their trust and

confidence, probably forever. Hence it is also

important for the leader to remain consistently

committed to his philosophy.Ultimately, it appears that leadership may have

nothing to do with your position. You could be

occupying the highest position in the largest

corporation, but if you are unable to wield your

influence outside the immediate realm of your

designation, not once or twice but consistently, then

you are not a leader but a mere corporate mortal.

Real Heroes From the FieldHere, we meet our Real Heroes, the engineers from our sites who deliver results to all our projects, notwithstanding the hardships.

privilege of someone to pass over the land

belonging to someone else. JKPDT had

acquired the land but it had not made the

payment for the acquired land. As a result,

whenever the employees of A2Z commenced

work, the locals opposed them and created

hurdles thereby bringing work to a halt.

Even to the extent once tried to stop the work

through violence and even stole the tools

and equipment. The problem is further

compounded by poor road infrastructure

and adverse weather conditions. Mr. Gupta used team expertise in logistics

and Public Relations to save company's

resources. He leveraged some local contacts

in order to meet urgent raw material

requirements in J&K and saved a significant

amount of transportation cost for A2Z. Just

because of dedicated persons like Mr. Gupta,

the company is known for its excellence in

project management.

Complete Machine Layout and physical

execution of the project under the guidance

of Mr. Atul Vashisht. The main challange of

the project is the extremely difficult

entrance to the site i.e. the approach road is

t h r o u g h n a r r o w b y l a n e s . T h e

material/machines etc are to be moved

inside taking help from local administration,

local police etc. Mr. Amit has the arduous

task to co-ordinate all this. Another

problem is that of managing the local

hindrances. This region is basically rural /

semi-urban and literacy rate is very low. The

villagers required a lot of persuasion to

enable smooth execution. However, the

project manager successfully tackled this

situation with innovative communication

strategies while adopting some unique HR

policies to resolve these issues. According to

him, the work culture of A2Z provides him

with the opportunity to exploit individual

potential and perform with motivation. He

considers himself very fortunate to be part

of A2Z.

Amit Sharma

Project Manager - Civil

We are well aware of our nation's economic

progress and we are happy to mention that it

also includes the state of Jammu & Kashmir

which is aptly named as “the paradise on

earth”. The people of Jammu & Kashmir are

gett ing employment opportunities ,

electricity is being provided to remote and

border villages. It's possible due to some

fabulous efforts of A2Z people who work

tirelessly to complete their assignments on

time. Mr. Naresh Gupta is one of them. He

along with his team is working on projects,

where they are constructing 3 substations in

Jammu (biggest substation in Jammu),

Manwal (25 km from Jammu) and Chandok

(300 km away from Jammu). They are also

erecting transmission lines in five other

project sites in New Delhi. In Jammu, the major problem faced by the

team was ROW (Right of way). It is the

Sustainable development is one of the most

important aspects in our existing corporate

philosophy. Yet there are very few who

actually practice it. It simply means

judicious use of resources so that they are

available to the future generations. A2Z

contributes to this cause by managing waste

and gainfully deploying its employees. This

is possible because of few stalwarts of the

company and Mr. Sharma is one of them. He

is a Project Manager (Civil) at Solid Waste

Treatment plant, Muzaffarnagar. Before

joining A2Z he worked for companies like

Ramky Enviro Engineers and VSL.Construction of the Muzaffarnagar plant

and installation of Machinery for producing

compost is being looked after by him under

the guidance of Senior Management of a2z

Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. He is also dealing

with the client (UP Jal Nigam) as a company's

representative. Initially the target for this

project is to process 120 TPD of Solid Waste

in this region. His key role and

responsibilities are Procurement of raw

materials, Manpower Planning, Design of1414

Page 15: Horizon volume 6 page by page

After serving in IAF as a Technical Airman

for four years, he joined A2Z as state head for

Andhra Pradesh (AP). Mr. Kumar also has

the experience of working with ICICI

Prudential. He is currently managing more

than 54 Branches in AP for A2Z, 47 of which

are of BSLI (Birla Sun Life Insurance) and 7

b r a n c h e s a r e o f N o k i a . H i s k e y

responsibil i t ies are Housekeeping,

Equipment Maintenance (which includes

Inverters, Air conditioners, UPS, Generators

and other services). He is also involved in

vendor management. He provides all

possible assistance to the clients. For

example, if the client wants to purchase any

equipment then he provides them with best

available product at least price which is not

always easy to manage. It requires in-depth

knowledge of vendors and market to get best

quotations. After getting the quotation, it

requires the approval from clients to finalize

the deal. Besides this, he willingly offers

other value-added services like interior

designing, etc.

The challenge in this job is that of managing

and supervising a large number of branches.

It is a unique challenge because the

resources are limited and he has to optimally

utilize those resources. Another challenge is

of HR related activities like training and

supervising and Performance Appraisals to

ensure that the employees are motivated

and are ready to perform to their best

potential. His concept of motivation is simple

and effective. He always treats his

subordinates with respect. He is a firm

believer in Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory

and tries his best to interact with his team

accordingly to fulfil their individual needs. He also interacts a lot with his subordinates

(BOEs) and makes them understand the

importance of client satisfaction. He also

provides them with the knowledge of CRM

and its practices with clients. According to

him while working with A2Z he developed

the sense of ownership and he believes that

good relations with clients and employees

are major contribution to his professional

success.

Mr. Gill is currently working as a project

manager with a2z Powercom. The Process of

E r e c t i o n a n d C o m m i s s i o n i n g o f

Cogeneration and Biomass Plant, Morinda is

being administered and controlled by him.

Before joining A2Z he has more than 10

years of experience and expertise of

working with Sugar Mills. He worked as

chief engineer for 5 years at Wahid Sandhar

Sugar Mill Ltd. Phagwara and Rana Sugars.

His Key responsibilities are complete

Erection and Commissioning of power

project. He is co-ordinating with Erection

Team at the site and he is also involved in

liaisoning and coordinating with Punjab

State Electricity board. He is interacting with

clients on the issues like Root Finalization

for 66 KV line and on providing temporary

connections for construction. He is also

catering for Balance of Plant calculations. It

includes all the calculations related to Heat

and mass transfer from one point to the

other and flow of steam and these

calculations are very important for a steam

operated plant and control of losses. In

turbine operated plants Reduction of Steam

Consumption is one of the major issue and in

order to do that. They have made a

benchmark of reducing 55% steam

consumption in first phase and reduce the

consumption up to 45%.

The main challenges he faced on site is of

maintaining the precision and accuracy

during the installation of plant equipment

and in Erection and Commissioning of

Power project. He had to work 24 hrs round

the clock when he was on site so that,

everything goes according to the plan. He

also practices cyclic reviews and proper

scheduling of the project on weekly basis.

Because the deadline for the project

completion is 31 March 2011 and A2Z has an

excellent record of on time project

completion.

A2Z Group launches the Ideas' BankIt is better to share an idea than to live with it.

An idea is a specific thought or a concept that arises in

one's mind as a result of creative thinking. It is just a

mental picture or an image when it occurs. It may or may

not be verbalized. There are times when it may not be

possible to substantiate it by further data and/or

information, but it may be based on our intuition and/or

knowledge. Good idea for the organization is like a fresh

breathe of oxygen. An idea combined with passion and

supported by hard work invariably leads to success.

We are launching a unique platform “THE IDEAS' BANK”

at A2Z Group based on this philosophy. The “IDEAS'

BANK” will provide a common interface to the employees

from all the departments across the A2Z Group to submit

their ideas, suggestions, and innovations they believe

would contribute positively towards growth and

development of the organisation and its employees and

further add value to our clients' businesses.

These ideas can be mailed to [email protected]

The

winning idea selected every month by Mr. Amit

Mittal, will get a cash reward of Rs. 5000.

I completed BE (Mechanical) in 1968 and

aspired to join a service that would offer me

scope for professional excellence and a good

quality of life. Therefore, I joined IAF and

was commissioned on 05 Jan, 1970.

My first posting was with fighter aircraft

base at Halwara (Punjab). The rigorous work

schedule stretched from pre dawn till

midnight… developing a tough, thorough yet

unassuming professional out of me.

Six months prior to 1971 war with Pakistan,

we were moved to operational/field

location. We stayed in tents which was our

home as well as, our workplace. Once, while

I was sitting on bed and going through daily

official mail, a Jawan entered and

immediately walked out of the tent. I called

him back and asked why he didn't stay. He

promptly replied that his duty was restricted

to office area and not home. He further

added that my feet were not on ground

which indicated that I was still at home and

yet I had not reached my office. Such simple

and stress-free working environment had at

all times been my greatest inspiration and

motivating force in my career.

During actual war from 3rd to 17th

December (1971), our comradeship, team

spirit, burning desire to repay our country

by defending and winning the war, kept

everyone in 100% fighting fit condition

which eventually resulted in our victory.

During my career in IAF, I worked in

diversified disciplines viz maintenance/

servicing /repair of MIG fighter aircraft fleet,radar/ communication/ weapon systems,

fleet of common user & specialist vehicles,

armaments (storage & periodic servicing),

external examination board of IAF,

Engineering Institute and Air HQs in various

appointments.

I retired from IAF in 1997 and have been

working in corporate sector for last 13 years.

My contribution in corporate sector as GM &

ED in Mangalam Group and as VP in Multitex

Group has been effective and 100% result

oriented only due to my rigorous training

and a long rewarding career in IAF. I

consider myself as a true product of IAF and

feel eternally grateful to IAF for making

myself a good professional in all fields of life.

The most difficult moment in my life arrived

when it was time to choose my career path

after school. Armed Forces had always

inspired me, and therefore, a friend and I

decided to join the NDA. But as luck would

have it, he joined but the family pressure

compelled me to take up engineering

instead. It was in my final year of college

when the movie 'An Officer and a

Gentleman' revived the soldier in me. As my

friend graduated to become a helicopter

pilot in the Indian Air Force, I found myself

courageous enough to materialize my

childhood dream – to join the armed forces,

which I did.

Immediately after completing my

Mechanical Engineering, I joined the Indian

Air Force in the Maintenance Branch. From

then on, I saw my disorganized civilian life

transformed into a disciplined one…and a

challenging one. Besides the high level of

physical fitness which I thereon found in me,

I always stayed professionally contended too.

I worked on MiG-23BN fighter-bomber – a

menacing-looking mean machine that could

deliver up to 3 MT of explosives behind the

enemy lines, which it did in the Kargil war. I

also worked on fourth-generation aero

engine, M-53, which powers the multi-role

fighter Mirage-2000, which carried out the

famous Tiger Hill bombing in this very Kargil

war, bringing this infamous war to an end.

For me, this war was particularly special, for

both my friend (the helicopter pilot) and I

were in the thick of action at this time.

For personal reasons, I had to seek

premature retirement from still coveted

service (I am using the phrase 'still coveted'

since with privatization, good talent prefers

the monetarily lucrative civil world rather

than Govt. sector jobs). But having spent

nearly 18 months in civil life now, I have

realized that Indian Air Force was far more

than just a government job. If we had

worked relentlessly and tirelessly 18-hours a

day for days, weeks and even months in a

row, we did manage to get quality time for

our family and ourselves by way of adequate

paid-leaves. If we found our take-home

salaries less than that of our contemporaries

in the corporate world (after the 1990s, i.e.

after stepping up of privatization), we never

felt the need for more because of our highly

subsidized club and sports facilities. Our

children may not have spent their free time

in the sprawling shopping malls all the time

(the biggest shop in forward areas are at

times even smaller than the corner-shop in

NCR), but they still are a disciplined lot . And

we have always enjoyed the cleanest of

environments – both in nature and in office.

I could go on and on…but that would be

unfair to the civil world which has accepted

me in my second stint with open arms. In

the preceding lines, I have only expressed

my nostalgic feelings for the armed forces –

to which I have given 23 prime years of my

life, and definitely got far more than I had

bargained for.

Jai Hind!

My stint in Indian Air Force (IAF) as a

Logistician was daunting and challenging

task which required handl ing of

multifarious activities - ranging from

providing rations to the troops to

maintaining airworthiness of the fighting

machines in far flung areas in adverse

conditions. This diversity enriched me with

experience as a decision maker on

provisioning, inventory management and

supply chain management for getting the

best in terms of time and money.

During the career there were situations

which tested one's skills to the maximum. In

winters of 1996, Srinagar valley was cut off

from the country for over 10 days due to

snow, landslides etc. It created virtual crisis

of Kerosene oil, the fuel for ordinary masses,

used both for cooking and heating. One

morning it was informed that the entire

stock of Aviation Turbine fuel (refined K'oil)

at Srinagar air base was reduced to NIL as

Prime Minister directed to distribute the fuel

in the valley. A security risk was at hand due

to non availability of ATF since air operation

could not be launched. The valley already

cut off, only aerial route was the option. ATF

stock at base was brought up to desired level

by utilizing IL-76 aircraft. These aircraft

were refueled at air bases in Punjab area

and de-fuelled at Srinagar air base over next

3-4 days to overcome the crisis.

In 2001 Gujarat was struck by severe

earthquake reducing the entire western

state to rubbles including air bases at Bhuj

and Naliya. Providence saved the runaway

making rescue possible. IAF took the lead in

extending complete logistics in terms of

evacuation of both injured as well as

survivors, sending medical assistance ,

ration, clothing, shelter, equipment for

excavation etc. from all over the country as

well as aid received from foreign countries .

It was a day and night effort over the next

fortnight to channelize the resources, create

and sustain the network of supply chain so

as to ensure minimum loss of men &

material, and finally the recover the leftover

material after the earthquake.

In the end the stint in IAF was not only

eventful but glorious where every day

brings in a new challenge and you learn to

face them squarely.

The wonders of our Equatorc) Water experiment exactly on the Equator – And

surprisingly, here on removing the plug, the water

passed through the drain in a calm manner instead of

going in circles as if it was sucked by the hole from all

directions!

The guide further informed us two more facts about

the Equator –

-One that our shadows totally disappear two times in a

year – i.e. on the 21st of March and 23rd of September.

On this day at 12 noon the sunrays are exactly

perpendicular making everything shadowless.

-Second that an object weighs 3% less at the Equator

than it would weigh on either side of the Equator.

While we are appreciating the above facts and

contemplating about the possible reasons for the

same, our guide further informed us that as per the

statistics gathered, we have joined the elite group of

around 2% of the entire population on earth that

actually crossed the equator by road in their lifetime.

With a sense of pride and achievement, we resumed

our onward journey.

During our tour to Uganda, we were lucky to pass

through the Equator by road. We experienced some

interesting facts about the Equator that left us

yearning to know more about the mysteries of nature.

The equator as you know is the imaginary line that

runs through the centre of the earth.

The water experiment - We witnessed the water

experiment wherein water was made to drain through

a hole at the bottom of a saucer shaped container. The

experiment was repeated at 3 locations – one at about

15 meters south of equator, second at about 15 metres

north of the Equator and the third - exactly on the

equator.

a) Water experiment at South of Equator – The water

was poured into the vessel with the drain hole

plugged. The water was allowed to come to a stagnant

position before the drain plug was removed. On

removing the plug, the water gushed through the

drain by rotating in “anti-clockwise circles”.

b) Water experiment at North of Equator – Here on

removing the plug, the watergushed through the drain

by rotating in “clockwise circles”
