I warmly welcome you to the 2017 Horasis Asia Meeting. My thanks go tothe Government of West Bengal and the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC)as well as to all our partners and supporters.
The Horasis Asia Meeting aims to be Asia’s foremost annual gathering of theregion’s most senior leaders from business and government. This annualevent is poised to be the ideal platform to explore and advance regionalcooperation, impact investing and sustainable growth.
As the economically fastest-growing continent, Asia is the world’s newgrowth engine. During the next two days, entrepreneurs from around theworld will discuss Asian firms’ rise to global eminence. Participants willalso examine the state of the global economy and Asia’s role in shaping the new economic world.
It is my sincere hope that the 2017 Horasis Asia Meeting will furtherpromote win-win economic relations and provide business opportunitiesfor corporations from Asia and the world.

Welcome
On behalf of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, I warmly welcome you to thefirst ever Horasis Asia Meeting in India, which will be held in Kolkata from26th to 27th November 2017. The event is being co-hosted by the Governmentof West Bengal. Horasis is an independent international organization whichexplores, defines and implements trajectories of sustainable growth. TheIndian Chamber of Commerce is happy to partner the event. We feel theHorasis Asia meeting will be the right platform to explore and advanceregional cooperation, boost investments and promote sustainable growthopportunities between Asian countries and between Asia and the world.
Asia continues to lead the global growth engine with its growth projections for2017 being pegged at 5.7% by the Asian Development Bank (versus a globalgrowth rate forecast of 2.7% by the World Bank). Within Asia, South Asia isthe emerging economic hotspot with an estimated growth rate of above 7%.India, South Asia’s largest economy, is expected to grow even faster at 7.5%.Hence, it is imperative for us to facilitate regional economic cooperation.
The state of West Bengal, a natural bridge to South East Asia, grew at 9.3%during April 2016 to March 2017, against a national economic growth rate of7.1% in the same period. Rich in biodiversity and natural resources, WestBengal has a well diversified economy with competitively priced labour forceand an upgraded urban infra space. The State has sectoral strengths in Agri -culture, Mining & Manufacturing, Healthcare, Hospitality and IT-ITes.
I am confident that the 2017 Horasis Asia Meeting will open up new avenuesof cooperation between Asia and the world, which would augment outputand employment opportunities across the globe and would help promotesustainable growth.
