President’s Points Another new, classy edition of Hopline is here and, that means two months of a great summer season are behind us and a wonderful fall season is upon us. Before we forget what took place during the summer let me review a couple of the highlights. Ivan Lendl, Hall of Fame tennis great spent Friday, August 20th here at the club. Ivan and Mark Mitchell played a round of golf against Ken Doyle and yours truly - - the older guys were the winners - - you guess which team that was. The golf was followed by a very special evening at our tennis complex. Ivan and tennis pro, Jim Whiting put on an exhibition of high quality ball striking, followed by a doubles match against two of Jim’s highly ranked friends. Needless to say, Jim showed his talent as he and Ivan won the set. Ivan then graciously held a forty-five minute “Q and A” session for the overflow crowd who jammed the tennis deck. It was one of the greatest tennis events ever held at the club. Wouldn’t your tennis-playing friends like to become a part of an exciting tennis club like this? Thanks to Ken Doyle for bringing his friend to headline this fun event. Speaking of Ken Doyle, he was named Teacher of the Year by the Connecticut PGA Section for the second time. Congratulations, Ken!! Hop Meadow Country Club participated in Patriot Golf Day for the second year on Saturday, September 4th. At the dinner following the afternoon of golf, professional Jason Waters announced that we raised over $18,000 - - more than doubling the amount raised last year. The funds go to The Folds of Honor Foundation that provides post secondary school scholarships to children or spouses of killed or injured service men or women. Your club has adopted this charity and we should all feel very proud of our significant contribution. Next year will be bigger and better. Mark it on your 2011 calendar as a “can’t miss” event. Have a great fall season and keep in mind that this time of year is perfect to use your club and bring your friends out to see the beautiful foliage on the course. Enjoy!! Bill Heidel, President

2010 Summer Camp Over 40 Hop Meadow member children enjoyed the Club’s 6 week summer camp program. We have already begun making plans for the 2011 summer season. Although Kids Entertainment added fresh ideas for a comprehensive camp program we will be handling the camp coordination directly next summer and bringing in our own Camp Counselors to run this very important program as we always did prior to this summer. We will be sharing details with members in February 2011 so stay tuned….!

Board Announcement Peter Black has stepped down from his role as Membership Chair after devoting five years to a very demanding position. Pete has worked tirelessly and has done an exceptional job during difficult and uncertain economic times. He will now be able to spend more time with his wife Heidi and their three boys. Also, trying to balance a full-time travel job that takes him throughout North America will now be easier. Pete will remain a member, and I’ll bet that he will always be singing the membership tune. Please take the time to pass along a big “Thank You” to Pete when you see him next. Best wishes Pete, from your fellow Board members. Joe Shiman, formerly Activities Chair, has been elected to take on the Membership role. Joe joined the Board one year ago and built an energetic and creative committee. I am certain that Joe will demonstrate the same leadership qualities in his new responsibility and will be a major factor in directing the club back to healthier membership levels. If you would like to assist Joe and your club at this critical time . . . give him a call. I’m sure he would like to hear from you. Bill Heidel, President

Holes in One Congratulations to the following members on their hole in one this seasons at Hop Meadow: Rich Forde #12 Dick Hoye #3 Sue Glasspiegel #3

It’s amazing how fast a golf season can go. It seems like just yesterday we were getting ready for Opening Day’s and as I write this, we are in the process for planning our Closing Day’s. I want to thank all of you who have been active members of the tournament programs throughout the season. Without your support, the tournaments wouldn’t exist. Many of us think golf comes to an end after Closing Day’s. That simply is not the case. There are many good days of golf in October and beyond. Just because we don’t have scheduled events doesn’t mean golf stops. Last year, the weather continued to be nice and we had golfers as late as December 3rd. In the fall the days do get shorter and the mornings are colder. Please keep in mind the potential for frost delays and the hours for the range closing. We will keep the range open as long as the weather allows. Nights, the range closes when the last golfer comes in off the course, with the exception of Sunday’s where it will close at specific times. Please keep a look out for the golf e-mails for specific closing times. This is the time of year where many people ask Tim and me what we do with all our free time. Well, we’re beginning to switch gears and start planning for 2011. We will be working on tournament calendars, trying to secure outings and special events, and of course, buying for the shop in 2011. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please share them with us. We want to hear your feedback. Lastly, I want to thank all of those who were kind enough to donate and/or play in the Patriot Golf Day. This year, our efforts were tremendous. Last year we raised $8800 and to date of this writing, we are over $18,000. This really shows the power of giving and what this will accomplish for a child who needs help. It is truly an amazing cause and one I am so happy to be a part of with all of you. Thank you for the support and plan to play in Patriot Day 2011.

I want to thank all of you who have been so supportive of the shop in 2010. We created a new “Partner’s Program” which many of you participated in. As a reminder, the credit from the program runs out December 24th. If you haven’t used up your credit, please try to accomplish this by the end of the year. We will be sending out letters to members who have credit in the “Partner’s Program” as well as those who have credit in the regular credit book. For those who have regular credit, we do not require you to use up your credit, but we ask you try if at all possible. Tim and I spent the last couple days transforming the shop, bringing out some new arrivals for fall. Sweaters, fleece, long sleeve shirts and dress woven’s all highlight the new shipments. Periodically, we will offer specials in the shop. Please keep an eye on your golf e-mails as this is our primary way to advertise our “specials”.

Congratulations to Ken Doyle We would like to announce to the membership Ken Doyle has been named the 2010 Teacher of the Year by the Connecticut PGA Section. This is the second time Ken has been bestowed this honor, winning previously in 1993. The special awards from the Connecticut PGA are awarded by your peers and for Ken to be honored for this award twice is truly remarkable. He will be honored at a special awards dinner at Foxwoods Resort on Sunday, November 21st. All members are invited and we ask that you contact Jason if you would like to attend to support Ken and celebrate his accomplishment. Please pass along congratulations the next time you see Ken.

What a great season for golf! I can’t remember when we had so many days to play. The late fall, winter and early spring is the time to make swing improvements. I will be around most of the time and would love to help you make those long awaited improvements without outside distractions. If you would like to do a golf trip to Florida I can also teach at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie. The golf course and practice facilities are great. Please call 860-836-9759 or 860-651-0550 or stop by to setup whatever packages you want. *Please note: The Dom Cup Toys For Tots Tournament is Sunday, October 17th. Entry fee is an unwrapped toy. Please let the golf shop know if you can play.

Warm Welcome Richard Kremer is our new Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. Rich did his internship here at Hop Meadow during the 2009 season as part of the UCONN Turfgrass Science Program. He graduated in May and immediately accepted the Assistant position. While at UCONN, Rich also interned at City Field in Flushing, NY for the New York Mets grounds crew. Previous to that he worked for several years at Warner Nursery here in Simsbury. Rich was a member of the UCONN Turf Club, which competed in the 2010 Turf Bowl Competition at the National Golf Industry Show. His knowledge, insight and energy proved valuable during such a stressful summer this season. Rich just passed the Connecticut Supervisory Exam for Turf and Ornamentals. Rich lives here in Simsbury. Please welcome Rich to the club next time you see him on the course.

Well, we made it through another golf season. It was indeed a tough year to grow grass or more importantly, keep it alive. It seemed every day brought a different set of challenges. Without the regular or excessive rainfall this summer, our small staff spent less in the peripheral areas string trimming and hand rotary mowing. Cart path and bunker wash outs were minimal also; they can be a huge burden forcing us to postpone or skip daily tasks. So the dry conditions allowed us to regularly fine-tune the main playing areas while other things took care of themselves. We were able to lightly topdress, brush or verticut the greens on a regular basis and with the extended dry periods, our poorly draining greens firmed up and putt like the others. As far as fairways, the ball sat up and rolled well. We were a true bump and run golf course this year. Given the construction, location and exposure of several of our greens, ball roll can be a challenge in an average or above average rainfall year. This year, with so little natural rainfall, we could manage the water on the putting surfaces and provide more consistency from green to green. Installing subsurface drainage to our wetter greens in the future would produce similar results. Due to the heat during our scheduled fairway aerification times, we were not able to perform our typical fairway program but we have every intention in getting back to business in the later part of the season. See you on the course and enjoy the rest of your season. Sincerely, Erick B Holm, C.G.C.S.

As the summer sadly comes to an end I can only look back and embrace the memories and good times we all have had this summer. I would like to thank the tremendous staff that worked together to provide a safe, fun and eventful summer. The Hop Meadow pool is special in so many ways and it was a joy to have had another wonderful summer.

Whether it was coming to the pool to relax and cool off from the summer heat, or to have an excuse not to run those errands or do household chores, or even to take a break from the daily grind and spend quality time with family and friends-The Hop Meadow pool was that special place to be. From the July 4th celebration to the family fun nights, to successful swim and dive lessons and not to forget the fabulous swim team who worked hard and competed so strong this summer…Hop Meadow was filled with exciting times had by all! As the weather turns and the pool closes its gates to prepare for a long winter break, I want you to embrace those times spent together with friends and loved ones and know that the Hop Meadow pool will be waiting to create new memories that you can all treasure for years to come.

New Dining Hours

Photographer Rich Wagner will be at the Club on Sunday, October 17th to participate in the Dom Cup Toys for Tots Day. There are a few exciting enhancements to the Hop Meadow website currently being worked on. One of those is including a family picture of each member family in the Member Directory. Photos not only help us personalize our site but also are a great way to “get introduced” to new and veteran members alike, before actually meeting them on the course, courts or clubhouse. We are encouraging all to make a special trip to the club, and get a professional family photo taken by Rich Wagner from Imagine It Framed. Rich will be providing us with a CD of all photos taken to allow an easy and categorized upload to our website. In addition, each family will have the option (without obligation) to purchase family portrait packages and/or photo holiday cards from Rich. We have added a camera icon to the member directory on our website www.hopmeadowcc.net and hope to have many family photos to populate from this special event. Bring your family and smiles to the club on October 17th and ‘SAY CHEESE’. All are also reminded that entry to the Dom Cup is an unwrapped toy. End of Season Slideshow & Celebration to follow play. Thanks, Terri Forde, Secretary

Second Annual

Hoptoberfest Beer Dinner, Thursday evening, October 21st,

from 6:00pm - 9:00pm.

Dinner will entail a five-course meal with appropriate beer pairings from Middlebury Vermont’s Otter

Creek Brewing and Wolaver’s Organic Beer.

Smooth with a deep malt complexity. Lightly hopped for a smooth sweet finish. Pairs well with French onion soup, hummus, Cornish hen, bratwurst bbq ribs, roasted pork tenderloin, crab cakes, and crème brulee.

Samuel Adams

Octoberfest

This rich and satisfying Bavarian-style OctoberFest comes from a special blend of imported German malts that creats a full-bodies brew and stresses a malty flavor and lingering aroma. Gently hopped and delicately balanced, its true-to-style, slow fermentation and long, cold maturation produces a luxuriously smooth, award-winning brew.

Thomas Hooker

Octoberfest

It’s October! And as the leaves change so do our palates. And there are plenty of beverages to quench our thirst. Fall wines should complement the hearty dishes and numerous events of the season. The perfect wines can be found right on your Club wine menu ~ Red Zinfandel: A deep red wine with bold fruity and spicy flavors, Zinfandel goes well with roasted turkey, cranberry sauce, pastas with tomato-based sauces, lamb, venison, eggplant, prime rib and stew. American Gewuztraminer: Gewurz is German for “spicy.” This full-bodies white wine can be very dry and crisp or quite sweet. Its floral and citrus flavors pair with pumpkin pie, turkey with gravy and traditional trimmings, sweet potatoes and caramel apples. Sparkling Wine: This bubbly beverage can be sipped with salmon, fried foods, spicy foods, white chocolate, spinach quiche and creamy pasta. Tawny Port: Known as a dessert wine, this golden colored vintage has a sweet nutty flavor that is a treat with dark chocolate, pecan pie, apple pie and cheesecake. Pinot Noir: Depending on age, this lighter red wine can have hints of berries, plums and cherries or more earthy flavors of wild mushrooms. Pot roast, meat loaf, gumbo, squash and Brussels sprouts are ideal partners for this wine. For the beer drinkers out there, we all know the Oktoberfest beers dominate the season. The first thing you notice when pouring a glass of this seasonal beer is the color, most Oktoberfests have a rich, deep reddish amber hue which itself is reflective of the season. Originally brewed to celebrate the beginning of the German brewing season and the 1810 wedding of crown prince Ludwig of Bavaria and his bride-to-be, princess Therese of Saxon-Hildburghausen. This amber beer was brewed in March(“Marzenbier”) and

left to age in cool lagering caves during the heat of summer. How does one pick their favorite? Pictures left: Members Margolis, Shelley, Forde, Morris and Amoroso
