W.E.B. W.E.B. stands for “Where Everybody Belongs.” It is a middle

school orientation and transition program designed to help

sixth graders connect with the school before sixth grade even

begins. The move to middle comes with significant changes, and

the W.E.B. program addresses this in multiple ways. It begins

with a sixth-grade orientation on the first day of school in

August. Each sixth grader will work with a small group of 8th

grade W.E.B. Leaders. These WEB Leaders guide students

through orientation and check in with students regularly

throughout the year during formal and informal W.E.B. and

school events, acting as a friend, leader, and mentor. It has

been shown that when students feel a connection to their

school, they are more successful, and they are less likely to

become victims of bullying.

Mustang P.R.I.D.E.

P.R.I.D.E. is an acronym that helps students remember what exemplary behavior looks

like at school. On the pride matrix, students can clearly see the positive behaviors we

expect in every area of the school. Students who display the qualities of Personal

Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, making the Decision to be Safe, and Excellence are

rewarded for their good behavior.

PBIS Rewards is an on-line system we use to recognize our students when they exhibit

positive behavior. Students are awarded “PRIDE Points” during class and can exchange

their points for items or participation in events. We also have the Mustang PRIDE Mart

(school store) that operates Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Personalized Learning and One-to-One Devices

Personalized Learning At HMS, teachers are encouraged to incorporate strategies, develop activities, and structure classrooms in such a way as to implement some of the 7 Principles of Personalized Learning. We have focused specifically on three of these principles: Varied Strategies, Mastery-Based Assessments, and Just-in-Time Direct Instruction. We also put an emphasis on Blended Learning, which means we expect students to be using digital resources some of the time, not necessarily every day, to enhance their learning experience.

One-to-One Devices In order to assist in the implementation of Blended Learning, all students at HMS are assigned a personal device, a Dell Latitude laptop. Students should bring a computer bag for the device and are expected to use the bag at all times when in the hallways and moving throughout the building. Devices help students learn to communicate with others, gather information, share ideas, and create products in new ways.

Follow the advice of Julian Bond (former President of NAACP), “Study long, but

don’t study wrong.”

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We are here to help.

Bring paper and pencils on the first day of school and any suggested supplies.

The hardest thing about 6th grade is adjusting to being the youngest in the school,

after being the oldest students in elementary school.

Relax and do not be afraid to

ask for help. We look forward

to teaching you.

Dedicate yourself to doing your

best, no matter what the class or

assignment. When you give 100% you

MORE WISDOM…

Always come to class prepared with paper, a pencil and a smile!

Be positive and energetic, and you’ll have a great year!

Do your best work; always be proud to put your name on your paper.

Remember that the first week of school is stressful for everyone - both students and

staff!

Bring a positive attitude.

Have a binder with dividers for all of your classes on the first day of school.

Start the year with a good attitude, and “Be Organized!” We all look forward to

meeting you!

Remember that your locker is not your bedroom. Keep it clean!

Get ready for a fun and challenging year and to begin it with a BIG smile on your

face!

Spend time the first week becoming familiar with new friends, teachers, other adults

at school, and your agenda!

Meet someone new the first day in each of your classes. New friends make new

experiences more fun!

Mrs. Sosebee, 6th grade Assistant Principal, recommends that you

make use of the good manners you learned from your family. Be kind, considerate, honest, and respectful of others’ space and belongings.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your teachers, your counselor, your

assistant principal, or your principal. We are all here to help you to

be successful!

Mr. Susina, HMS 6th grade counselor, wants you to remember that

each of you will be an important part of Hopewell, and we are

looking forward to having you! As the teachers said, be organized,

be friendly, and be positive…and you will have a sensational year!
