A couple of weeks back, December 8 to be exact, we marked the 40th anniversary of the death of John Lennon at the hands of a disgrun-tled and deranged fan. I was only six years old at the time, so I was not aware enough of who Lennon was to be very affected by it, but it was an event that truly shocked the world. The list of people who have had a comparable impact on music and culture as John Lennon is very short.

Among the many musical gifts he gave to the world is his 1971 holiday offering, “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” Now I admit I have some pretty rigid opinions about Christmas music, including when it should start being played — not until after Thanksgiving, thank you very much — and what is acceptable to listen to. When it comes to Christmas music, I take a closed canon approach. If it wasn’t recorded by Frank Sinatra, Dean Mar-tin, Andy Williams or others of that ilk and era, I don’t have much tolerance for it. But I make an exception when it comes to this song.

Originally the song was written as a protest song against the war in Vietnam, but over the years it has sort of been blended into the typical soundtrack of the season and gotten lost in playlists piped through speakers in malls and department stores.

The song is unique in that it finds itself falling in between traditional holiday cheer songs (“Winter Wonderland,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” etc.) and more traditional carols that proclaim the birth of Jesus (“Silent Night,”

“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” etc.). It is a song that demands we take account of our actions and consider what changes are needed to make the world a better place for all God’s children. It is a song that embodies the Advent themes of hope, peace, joy and love as well as any, even though it never mentions angels or shepherds or a baby and his mother.

And while I’m not advocating that we make room for it in our hymnal — although I wouldn’t mind, either — the final refrain, “war is over if you want it,” should be a sentiment easily endorsed by any of us claiming to celebrate the coming of the Prince of Peace.

Friends, the Advent of our Lord is upon us. The time of preparation is nearing an end. May we make ourselves ready to welcome the Christ anew into our lives to comfort and challenge us as we seek to live as one of his disciples.

Leader: Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival.

People: Let us receive the Lord our God with gladness!

Leader: Today we light the Angel Candle of Love, acknowledging that God is love and that Jesus is the Beautiful Savior, the image of God’s love.

People: Let us receive the Lord our God with gladness!

Leader: As we wait for the night of Christ’s birth, grant us grace to cleanse ourselves of all that is not lovely, as we seek to become more like Christ and worship him alone. Help us to love all whom God loves, just as we have been loved by God. And help us to reflect the glory of the Lord that shines upon us.

People: Let us receive the Lord our God with gladness!

Greeting to Worshipers Leanna Coyle-Carr

Prayers of the People David Duncan

Gospel Reading —Luke 1:26–38 Lillie Campbell

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel,

“How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

Anthem O Come, All Ye Faithful arr. Dan ForrestSanctuary Choir

Jeff Brummel and Max Tucker, four-hands pianoRecorded December 22, 2019

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.

Come and behold Him, born the King of angels,O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels, sing I exaltation!Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above.

Glory to God, all glory in the highest.O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to Thee be all glory giv’n!

Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing!O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Gospel Reading —Luke 1:46b–55 Leigh Curl

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

Musical Meditation In the Bleak Midwinter arr. Amy PottkotterLee Henry, Taylor Henry and Candy McComb

Amy Pottkotter, piano

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;

Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign;

In the bleak midwinter, a stable-place sufficed The Lord God incarnate, Jesus Christ.

Lord, you left your throne and your kingly crown, when you came to the earth for me;But in Bethlehem’s home there was found no room for your holy nativity.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus. There is room in my heart for you.My heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus. There is room in my heart for you.

Heaven’s arches rang when the angels sang, proclaiming your royal degree; But of lowly birth did you come to earth, and in great humility.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus. There is room in my heart for you.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb.If I were a wise man, I would do my part;Yet what I can I give Him; give my heart.

Christmas bags bring hope and love to homebound

Minister to Senior Adults Jessica Capps reports that 90 Christmas bags were recently delivered to Wilshire’s homebound members and other senior adults. “We expanded the annual homebound Christmas bag delivery to include those who have been especially isolated during the pandemic,” Capps says. The bags contained Christmas goodies including cookies baked by Wilshire chef Elizabeth Ferguson, and were delivered over a three-day period by a team of volunteers.

“Please continue to pray for our older adults,” Jessica says. “May they know peace in the weeks and months ahead. May they continue to be safe and healthy. What a joyous time it will be when we can once again gather safely and worship as the family of Wilshire Baptist Church — everyone, young and old.”

Wilshire member Bob Bozeman was one of 90 Christmas bag recipients

With Christmas fast approaching and the effects of Thanksgiving travel and gath-

erings still unfolding, it’s easy to settle into a spirit of pessimism as to when life will once again be “normal.” The COVID-19 numbers are not improving, nor are they forecasted to as we look to the early part of 2021.

Even as approved vaccines are starting to reach people, the full details of distribution and availability are far from worked out. In this in-between time, Wilshire’s COVID-19 Advisory Task Force continues to meet regularly in order to proactively prepare ourselves for the time when we can all be back together.

There are many ways in which the pandemic has forced the church to pivot and adapt our offerings, and our beloved Advent traditions are the latest examples. Hanging of the Green may have moved online, but its spirit of joyous col-laboration and creativity endured. We’ve heard your positive feedback in comments like these:

“Y’all, I’m crying over here. While we aren’t physically with each other right now, the Spirit is strong tonight.”

—YouTube chat during Hanging of the Green

premiere

“You are helping to keep us together even when we cannot be together.”

—Facebook post after Hanging of the Green

We found a creative way to bring people safely back into the Sanctuary with our Honest Advent Experience, and your response has been overwhelming:

“While we prefer to be at church with all the people, these few minutes being inside for the first time in so long were a gift in this long waiting that has already been going on.”

—Facebook post by Honest Advent attendee

The memories we are building together during this time will be with us forever. Someday, we will look back and say, “remember when…?” We will continue to be as creative as possible and look for ways to celebrate progress until that day comes. In the meantime, stay connected, please wear your masks, limit your gatherings — even at Christmas — and play it safe.

Food and Supplies Response Team is comprised of volunteers from our Missions and Ad-vocacy committees who are at the ready to help those who are isolated and need food or other supplies brought to them. We have identified existing designated and budget funds that will be used to meet urgent needs of members, such as food and medicine and limited rent assistance. Lead contact is Heather Mustain, [email protected] or 214-452-3110. Spiritual Support Response Team is comprised of trained lay leaders and staff who are available to talk with members who are lonely, scared or just need to talk during this time of isolation. This is not a substitute for professional counseling. Volunteers will call care receiv-ers on at least a weekly basis to listen to them and offer emotional support. Other referrals for additional identified needs will be made to the appropriate teams or staff. Lead contact is Gail Brookshire, [email protected].
