F.O.R. a better me.

F.O.R. a better you.

F.O.R. a better school.

Friends of Rachel is a school wide program to promote kindness and compassion in our students. Through classroom activities and school wide events

students explore how one random act of kindness can start a chain reaction of the same. Students caught doing a random act of kindness is given a link. Links are connected in classrooms to create chain links of kindness. At the end of the year we hook all the chain links together to represent the many random

acts of kindness done throughout the year.

The Physical Education classes started the year off outside enjoying the sunshine learning basic skills to flag football. The students enjoyed playing fun games of girls vs girls and boys vs boys flag football.

6th and 7th graders practice the skill of working together during cooperative unit in PE class. Working on team building and problem solving.

8th graders have enjoyed being introduced to archery and orienteering. Some of them have become sharpshooters.

All students had their first rotation of health education.

Things to remember PE and Health:- gym suits and athletic shoes are to be worn daily

while in P.E. class.

- When students are in PE class they should bring home gym suits each Friday for washing.

Dear Parents,

On Monday, November 12, 2018 the students and faculty of Read Mountain Middle School plan to hold an assembly honoring the veterans of the United States Armed Forces. At the assembly, we plan to recognize veterans in attendance, listen to performances from both our band and our choir, and hear some personal messages from our guests. We would also like to recognize any immediate family members currently serving in the military. We would like to take this opportunity to invite any veterans in your family to attend this special program on November 12 at 9:15 a.m. This is extended to grandparents, uncles, aunts, sister, brother, parents…any family member who is a veteran of any branch of our Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard). Immediately following the assembly we would like to invite the veterans in attendance to a reception in our auxiliary gym.

We hope to have a positive response to this assembly. If you have a family member that would be able to attend we would ask that you respond by filling out the information below and return it to your child’s 4A teacher. You may also e-mail the information below to Heidi Maust at [email protected] In order to fully plan for this event, we ask that you please return this information by Wednesday, October 24th. Once we have received information from all of our veterans, we will send out further information about the assembly.

We are excited about this assembly, and we hope that our school’s family of veterans will take part in this event.

Sincerely,

Heidi Maust

What’s New in the Library● Books are now “genrefied”. All the books are now categorized by the genres of Sports, Graphic Novels,

Fantasy, Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, and Adventure. We are working on currently getting all of the books labeled that way in the catalog as well, so students can have a more Barnes and Noble atmosphere in the library.

● Book Buddies-We have introduced a new section in the library called Book Buddies. This section contains multiple copies of various books. Please promote students to read these together or use them for small groups or Literacy classes.

● Lunch in the Library-Every Wednesday and Friday, we are giving out ten passes per grade level to come and have lunch in the library. The students seem to really be enjoying this.:)

● Library Club-We have had our first Library Club meeting during lunch on 9-18. We had over 80 students across the three grade levels. If you ever want to come join us for one lunch meeting, we would love to have you. Meetings will be announced in the mornings.

● Bookmark Reading Challenge-The bookmark reading challenge has started. Please encourage your students to read and complete their online surveys for the books they have read using the library website. The first nine weeks is a four book challenge.

● Star Readers-In the next few weeks, we are going to start a teacher book club called Star Readers. This club will give you an opportunity to stay connected to what the kids are reading and also earn recertification points. More information to come very soon.:)

Sixth grade students are continuing to learn skills related to executive functioning. Executive functioning is a set of skills that help kids plan, manage time, and organize. This month we will

be focusing of time management. Use this month's focus to talk to your kids about your personal strategies for time management.

The first nine weeks is almost done. Check with your child to see if they are running low on supplies.

Science students in Mrs. Callahan's and Mr. Flippen's science classes this semester will be going on a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience field trip October 24, 2018.

Mountain Castle SWCD through a grant will be teaching students about water monitoring and analysis using field equipment including hand-held technology. Students will be testing water quality from Catawba Creek and presenting and

discussing their results in classroom activities.

Fall of the 2018-2019 school year is off to a great start in my Life Science classes. Students started the year reviewing the scientific method and metric measurement. They developed hypotheses about questions such as which color candy classmates would prefer, how cabbage juice would be affected by adding chemicals, and how much water could pennies hold due to surface tension. We measured and collected data on length of pipe cleaners, number of water drops a penny would hold, and how many classmates preferred different colors of candy. My students really “measured up” to the challenge!

Our true Life Science content began with our unit on cells and cellular processes. Students were successful in labeling and drawing plant and animal cells with their correct structures. Students even created their own shrinky dink cells to keep! To show their understanding of how cells are designed, students had to create a cell project; these projects included 3-D models, booklets, mobiles, and analogy posters. Projects were creative, scientific, and unique. After we discussed all of the chemical compounds in our cells (carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins), students tested various foods for these molecules. This was messy, but fun! Students witnessed the process of diffusion by smelling balloons with various flavorings inside of them. We observed eggs shrinking and swelling up through the process of osmosis.

Following cell structure, we dived into the world of cellular processes - photosynthesis and cellular respiration. In photosynthesis, students removed the pigments out of leaves and examined the cellular composition of leaf cells. When we discussed how animals and plants get their energy through respiration, students blew through straws to show how the carbon dioxide they give off can show a chemical reaction. We also witnessed pea seeds giving off carbon dioxide as they grow and use energy. Students just finished their grading period with the process of cell division - mitosis at its finest. Students observed this under microscopes and created their own illustrations of the proces. We are off to a great semester! Up next: Genetics!
