Pastor’s Message

These forty days of Lent are a very special time for us as disciples. It is a time for reflection, for self-examination, and a time to return to the God who created us, and who rescues us. This is a time to receive the gifts of God’s grace, “to believe with the heart and confess with the mouth the wonder of God’s love in Jesus.” This journey to the cross gives us a chance to see the magnitude of God’s gracious love in Christ in spite of the sinfulness and cruel rejection of your human response to the One who came to share our life, show us God, and redeem us.

We may struggle on the pilgrimage called Lent, as we read again and reflect upon the passages from Holy Scriptures that describe the encounters that led to the cross. But we can also realize , “It is a struggle Jesus shares”.

This time of worship and contemplation is opportunity to indeed return to the Lord. Be sustained and strengthened by the word, and experience the closeness of our Lord in the bread and the wine. We can remind one another that “within the community of the church, God never wearies of forgiving sin and giving the peace of reconciliation.”

In Christ,

Pastor Dave

2. Charged new council to begin modifying and improving the calendar process at Hope including a system with one council member in charge of calendar, creation for calendar request forms and a public display of calen-dar. 3. Agreed unanimously to follow the Long Range Planning Committee recommendation to begin the Congregational Revitalization Process through the Synod by administrat-ing and submitting the Short Form Vitality Survey on two consecutive Saturday and Sunday Services. Also to order the Long Form survey to be administered at a future two weekends of services to gain the data necessary to go through the synod process. 4. Agreed unanimously to have a four hour council training/retreat which will include the Synod Best administrative practices workshop by Assistant to the Bishop Michelle Hilton. 5. Thanked leaving council members Renate Wilms-Rovin and Linda Becker for their ser-vice to Hope.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper was held in Luther Hall on February 13 with 26 attending. Delicious pancakes and sausage were pre-pared by Renate Wilms-Rovin, Michel Northsea, Jane Hise, Julia Southard, and Víctor Kahler. Judy Thomason donated the King cake and Francine Richard found the baby.

The group played BINGO after eating. Prizes were donated for the fun of winning. This has been an annual event for several years. Pro-ceeds for the meal were donated to Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Ministry.

No, Diane Kahler did not win at BINGO- maybe next year!

Many thanks to the clean-up crew- you are an integral part of every activity.

We did raise some money to go to the shipping of the shoeboxes for 2018.

After the sunrise service and un-til 9am on Easter Sunday, April 1, breakfast will be available in Lu-ther Hall. Eggs, sausage and pan-cakes along with juice and coffee will be available along with volun-teer baked coffee cakes or sweet rolls. There will be a sign-up in the Narthex for the home baked goodies. A free will offer-ing will be taken. Please be gen-erous. Questions? Contact Dea-con Diane, Family Activities

Our Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Ministry is active all year. We are collecting items to fill our shoeboxes and there have been re-ally good sales at Walgreens and Walmart on toys, dolls, stuffed an-imals, and clothing.

Remember we fill boxes for ages:

2-4, 5-9, and 10-14.

Toothpaste and candy are no longer included but there are so many great gifts that can be put into each shoebox.

We hope to have several fund-raisers this year to help ship our boxes and include the booklet “The Greatest Journey.”

Our February “Buy a Heart” was not successful but it was a start to get everyone into giving from your heart for this wonderful outreach ministry.

Several of the visitors are repeats. He will be speaking with some of them to see if they are interested in joining our congregation. The congregation is doing a great job welcoming the visitors to our services but could do a much better job in Luther Hall during the coffee hour. Pastor has had several dialogues with the Synod staff and has reassurance from them regarding candidates. There was a discussion held regarding the number of candidates we will have to inter-view. Pastor reminded us that there is possibility for growth in our church and that we need to think of this as a mis-sion outpost.

10. Reports of Council Liaison 1. Outreach Committee (Liaison – Renate) - The Outreach Committee met on Tuesday January 9. Dis-

cussion was held regarding the taco dinners we will be having for the scouts, their parents and leaders on January 29 and February 1. All of the members of the congregation are encouraged to attend. We will be having a potato pancake dinner on Shrove Tuesday.

2. Finance Committee (Liaison – Hans) - No meeting 3. Worship Committee (Liaison – Harold) – No meeting 4. Digital Committee (Liaison – Steve) – Digital met to learn about programming the Digital sign. Oth-

er training sessions will be held to learn about the web site, social media, computers and our wireless capability. 5. Long Range Planning (Liaison – Casey) – Recommended Pastor fund goal be increased to $200,000

from $150,000 based on the Synod’s analysis of our finances. Recommended to council per the Synod’s suggestion to have a workshop on Best Financial Practice. This workshop would be conducted by someone from the Synod office and should be attended by all council members and everyone in the church who handles money. They would like to see Hope explore the ELCA Ministry Intense Revitalization Program. This workshop should be attended by all council members and as well as all members of the congregation. Discussed sharing God’s love with all people by perhaps having monthly neighborhood gatherings and developing a marketing plan for Hope. Will be looking into a rotating basis of individuals and couples to create a more welcome atmosphere during coffee hour by sitting with visitors at the first table to the right where the visitors tend to congregate,

6. Property (Liaison – Vic) –Recorded 33 hours of maintenance which does not include sign program-ming and pond maintenance. The Memorial Garden is in good order. Installed more LED bulbs in the sanctuary. Re-moved dead fish from the pond that were killed when someone dumped a toxic substance into the memorial pond. Our water lilies look like they may also be dying. Removed a malware virus from the Pastor and Finance computers and re-moved a virus from the Secretary’s computer. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me with the upkeep of the buildings and the grounds. We need to look into more security lights around the church property. Reminded everyone that all doors in the church should be closed. If you are the last one to leave that room close the door after you. It is important that all fire doors be closed when leaving the church and Luther Hall.

7. Call Committee (Liaison – Harold) – They are waiting on Connie Smucker from the Synod who is talk-ing to perspective candidates to be interviewed.

Minutes (cont.)

8. Nominating Committee – We have five vacancies on the council. The committee has secured six names of people who are willing to give their time to serve on the council. There are four three-year terms and one two-year term available. The four people with the highest number of votes will fill the three-year terms, the next highest will fill the two-year term and the person with the lowest number of votes will be an alternate who will come on the coun-cil when someone drops off which is expected to happen in the near future.

9. Personnel Committee – Still doing research 11. Old Business a. Absent Council Member – Letter was sent to absent council member requesting that they respond to

the council by this council meeting. No response was received. A member of the congregation has spoken to the absent member about responding and we still have heard nothing. Another letter will be sent stating we understand their cir-cumstances and they will be relieved of their duties. They will be advised that If their schedule slows down and they want to come back they will be welcome. A motion was made and seconded to remove this member at this time. Motion passed unanimously.

b. Ministry Spending Plan – The Ministry Spending Plan was reviewed again and the budget amount of four items has been lowered. The council members all agreed with the revised figures.

12. New Business a. Microphone – Some of the microphones need to be replaced. Harold has checked with various carriers

regarding costs. The Pastor’s microphone also needs to be replaced as it is on B Band. The government has sold B Band and it is now used for First Responder, fire, etc. The microphone gets a lot of feed-back from those areas. After a dis-cussion, it was decided that one of the microphones and the Pastor’s microphone will be replaced and that we will put it out to the congregation as a wish list. We will also look into paying for the microphones out of memorial money. Harold will get a price on what it would cost to replace the Pastor’s microphone.

b. Guest parking signs – A discussion was held regarding the lack of guest parking places. With more and more guest coming to our services this will be looked into. At one time, John was to look into this so we will talk with John to see what he has found out and then it will be turned over to the Outreach Committee.

13. Consent Agenda a. Nature Coast Intergroup Events Committee meet in Luther Hall 1:30 - 2:30 PM Saturday February

3. b. AA District 28 (Citrus County) and AA District 17 (Marion County) meet one Saturday in March

TBA and one in May TBA hosting the North Florida Area Delegate to the National Conference of AA who will in March give a pre-conference report and in May a post conference report to local AA's in both counties. District 13 in Hernando County may also be invited. Hope is a central location for all three.

c. Dinner for Scouts their parents and leaders on January 29 and February 1, 2018 After discussing the Consent Agenda, a motion was made and seconded to accept the Consent Agenda. Motion

passed unanimously. 14. Meeting Highlights for Newsletter and Bulletin 1. Approved for presentation to the congregation of 2018 Ministry Spending Plan in the amount of

$205,643.04 which includes the cost of a full-time pastor. 2. Accepted the nominations of the nomination committee of six members to fill five positions open in

2018 on the council. The ballot will also have blank lines for nominations from the floor. In the actual election the top four vote getters will serve three-year terms, the fifth vote getter will serve the vacant two-year term and the sixth vote getter will serve as alternate as council anticipates another vacancy very soon. If there are nominations from the floor other vote getters would serve as alternate 2, Alternate 3, etc.

3. Recognized the increased giving of the congregation in 2017 over 2016. Total giving 2017 was a 24.3% increase over 2016 including 10% over regular giving and an additional 14.3% donated to the Pastor Capital Fund.

4. Approved an increase in the 5-year pastor capital fund goal to $200,000 to reflect the synod analy-sis on amount needed ($40,000 per year) to guarantee to be able to pay for a full-time pastor. A new single thermometer will be put in Luther Hall to reflect the total five-year goal as opposed to a one-year thermometer.

5. Approved having the synod present a Best Financial Practices Workshop to Hope's Council, financial officers and anyone in the congregation wishing to attend.

6. Approved the exploration of the synod Director of Evangelical Ministry to present workshops to help develop an Intensive Three-Year Revitalization Plan for Hope.

7. Approved the dates of Monday January 29 and Thursday February 1 for Scout Appreciation Taco Dinners for scouts, their parents and leaders. All members of the congregation are urged to attend.

8. Reminded all to attend the Boy Scout Spaghetti Dinner on February 10. 9. The Call Committee reports the synod is actively putting together a list of three names and as soon

as the synod sends them to Hope, the committee will begin the interview process. 10. Reminded everyone present that the inside doors to the parlor and the two doors in the classroom

hallway of Luther Hall are fire doors and should always be shut by the last person leaving the area. 11. Reminded everyone that they should on a rotating basis sit with guests at the coffee hour so they

are not left alone talking to themselves, but benefit from the love of this congregation. 15. Adjournment – Motion made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. Motion passed unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 9:20. Pastor Bradford lead us in prayer.

“Just Plain” Steve

Dear fellow brothers and sisters in Christ,

As I leave the presidency of Hope to become "just plain" Steve, I am so amazed at what you have accomplished in the past year. THANK YOU!!!! Thank you for the offerings you have made and are making to Hope. Your offerings; of your time, of your God-given talents, and of your money; help support all that we do at Hope. This church could do nothing with-out the faithful gifts of you the members. Together, we are the Body of Christ. When we are giving, we are being the faithful people God calls us to be. Not only are your regular offerings up significantly, but you have in the course of 8 months contributed over $100,000 additional funds which amount to over half of Hope's five year capital campaign goal to raise $200,000 to call a full time pastor. I know the sacrifices you have made in these efforts. I could not begin to name all of what you have given up to be the hands of God's works here at Hope. I know of cruises not taken, soda not drunk, meals not ate out, vacations canceled, etc. etc. I cannot tell you what the extra dollars - one at a time - mean to Hope. We have proven we will be led by a full time pastor and that our missions will not only continue, but expand. Our offerings bring about blessings on many levels. We are transformed and made new through our offerings. We believe in a God who is generous. And we are created in God’s image. So we are called to be generous as God is gener-ous. Our offerings also help to transform others. There would be no quilts for the homeless without our offerings. There would be no outreach programs to the community. There would be no food donated to Serving Our Savior food bank. There would be no bags of food for school children who may not eat otherwise on weekends. There would be no shoe boxes. There would be no scouts in our neighborhood. There would be no Bible studies, Sunday school classes, no ser-vices for us to attend, no flood relief donations, no Stephen ministry, no awe-some call committee, no wonderful deacons, no fantastic pastor, no visitation of the sick and shut ins, no support of all the world wide ELCA ministries. I could go on and on for the ministries here at Hope are numerous and impactful as your contributions do God's work. (cont. on next page)

William Temple, a former Archbishop of Canterbury (1942-1944) once said, “The Church is the only society that exists for the benefit of those who are not its members.” In a society rampant with me-ism, I am so humbled by how Hope is serving the needs of those who are not yet members. You of all the disciples of Jesus I have known, understand completely that He didn’t say “Follow me” to a bunch of unsuspecting fishermen and then build a wooden building where they could gather once a week before going their separate ways. He invited them to follow him into a new relationship with the heavenly Father, into a new way of being, into a place of living hope, into a life of transformation from brokenness to wholeness, into a spiritual journey to grow and share the Good News. Once again thank you for your generosity, support, encouragement and part-nership in our ministries here at Hope. Your time, talent and money are great-ly appreciated, never taken for granted and will help our church to move for-ward.

But more important, thank you for being here as my friends. Thank you for al-lowing me to serve, and thank you for helping me to become a better follower of Christ. Let us continue the journey together in love.

Yours in Christ, "Just Plain" Steve

Oh Laddies and Lassies, it will be a little late this year. You know the problem with suns and stars and the Wee Folk. This year at Hope cele-brating the green will be on March 18 with corned beef, cabbage, and pota-toes after the 10am worship service. The Wee Folk are looking for Irish des-serts from the congregation. And a wee bit of gold in the form of mon-ey….Now Laddies and Lassies, be generous. Anything over the cost of the meal will buy hearts for a Christmas Child. Be generous!!! And give a helping hand for the clean up.

Did You Ever Wonder…?

Did you ever wonder about passing the Peace?

First be reconciled to your brother or sister…

For some people, the moments in the liturgy following the prayers of the church are awkward ones. The presiding minister offers these words: “The peace of the Lord be with you always.” The congregation responds “And also with you.” The members of the congregation are then invited to “share the peace” with one another. And what does this really mean? Sharing God’s peace is not simply offering a friendly hello to those sitting around you. Sharing God’s peace is not a time for catching up on news with your neighbor or for reminding someone about an upcoming meeting. Sharing God’s peace does not require each worshiper to offer a sign of God’s peace to every other wor-shiper present. This exchange is an act of reconciliation that serves as a tran-sition point between the Word and Meal portions of the liturgy. As stated in the Sunday Assembly:

The exchange of peace is a ministry, an announcement of grace we make to each other, a summary of the gift given to us in the liturgy of the Word. This ministry we do to each other is far greater than a sociable handshake or a ritual of friendship or a moment of informality. Because of the presence of Jesus Christ, we give to each other what we are saying: Christ’s own peace. Then, having been gathered by the Spirit around the Risen One present in the word, we turn to celebrate his meal.

How is the peace actually exchanged? Some enact this exchange with a hand-shake. Other may use an embrace or a kiss. It is not a time to just move about and greet friends; it loses the equality of simply greeting those around you. It is more than saying “good morning” or having other conversation. It is espe-cially important that this practice invites hospitality to visitors; this is not a time to simply greet those we know. Share Christ’s peace with those close to you. Look them in the eyes and have a hardy handshake for those who can have a hardy handshake without pain. Or bump elbows. Or bump fists. But look them in the eyes. (source, in part, from ELCA)

Coffee Hour Note

Birthdays or any special occasion

Pastor Dave's motto of the 4 Cs: Communicate, coordinate, cooperate in the name of Christ needs to be practiced.

If anyone plans to bring or order a sheet cake for a special occasion (birthday, holiday, anniversary etc.), please, please, let the members who have signed up for the coffee hour on that same day know in advance. It makes no sense for volunteers to bake and bring a variety of sweets when someone is honored with a lovely cake. It just causes unnecessary duplication, expense, and work.

Thank You for your understanding
