We will be putting the sign up sheet out in the narthex sometime in the next couple of weeks for volunteers to help, if you’re available please sign up. If you or someone you know have an antique automobile and would like to show it, there will be a sign up sheet for that, plus if you do crafts and would like to show off your handy work there will also be a sheet for that. Pick up a flyer to remind you, or give one to your family or friends.
We all have questions for God, and over the next number of weeks we will look for the answers that God gives in His Word. During our Sunday morning Bible Class (9:30am in the church basement) we'll be wrestling with a new question every week or two. The questions all came from members of the class (you can add one too, just let Pastor Jason know.) Check in the Anchor to see what questions are coming and join us for this time in God's Word.
August 27 - Will my pet be in heaven? Next questions - Why doesn't God show His power anymore (like parting the Red Sea)? Why does God allow so much suffering and evil? Why doesn't God destroy the devil, since Jesus has defeated him? Why do so many people turn to "feel good" churches? Why would God have to sacrifice Jesus to pay for our sins, couldn't he just speak that all sin is payed for? And more!
Please note - the Wednesday Bible class
will not resume until September 6th and
we will continue with Making the Case for
Christianity chapter 6.
Thank you so much for all the cards, thoughts, prayers and support you have shown to us. Thanks also for all the memorials to Hope in memory of Ben. Blessings to you all ! Betty Sanders and Family

Our Favorite Hymn of Hope- Today’s favorite hymn of Hope is
Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee. The words for this hymn were
written by one great man and the music by another. The words
were written by Henry van Dyke, a great 19th Century clergyman,
poet, and educator. The music for this hymn comes from
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, written and performed (with him
conducting) after he had lost his hearing. While Beethoven never
wrote hymns, a number of people adapted portions of his music
to serve as hymn tunes. “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” is the
best known of those.
Van Dyke was quite taken by the joyful sound of Beethoven’s
Ninth, and thought that it should be used as a hymn
tune. Others had tried without great success. Then, while van
Dyke was serving as guest preacher at Williams College in
Massachusetts, he wrote this hymn of praise while in awe of the
beauty of the surrounding mountains. He presented it to the
college president to be sung in the chapel.
Though during his life Van Dyke was the author of numerous
devotional books, this hymn of praise to God, “Joyful, Joyful, We
Adore Thee,” is his more enduring work.
To the Glory of God and in loving Memory of
Ben Sanders
A gift has been given by Willard & Patricia Rainey
and Donna Schilling.
Please take some time to review the Bible readings below,
they will be the subject of next week’s sermon.
(OLD TESTAMENT) – Jeremiah 15. Because Jeremiah had
words of judgment for the people of Judah, he was
rejected and persecuted. This Reading records his
complaint to the Lord – and the Lord's promise to
be with Jeremiah in all he might experience. It's a
promise we hear, too, as we represent Jesus in our
world.
(EPISTLE) – Romans 12. This week's Epistle is yet another
challenging section from Romans. Paul describes
the marks of the true Christian. All of them are
products of the love of Jesus for us and our love for
him, as we extend that love to those around us.
Paul's advice about how to deal with those who
"rub us wrong", or hurt us with what they say or do,
is especially helpful. Paul offers us the dynamics
involved in overcoming evil with good.
(HOLY GOSPEL) – Matthew 16:21-28. Last week we heard
Peter's great confession of faith. Today good old
Peter becomes "Satan", the tempter. The cross did
not fit Peter’s expectations of the Christ. Jesus saw
in Peter's reaction a temptation to go another way
instead of the Father's way – but, true to his Father’s
purpose, Jesus went willingly to the cross. He says
there are crosses for us to carry, too.
