Another year and another decade is gone right before our eyes.

Weren’t we just all consumed about the projected computer failures and resultant disasters of Y2K? It seems as though the weeks, months and years get shorter and shorter, however, that also means that another outdoor sporting season will be upon us before we know it. As we look forward to 2010, your club is doing quite well and, in fact, better than expected at this time last year. The December financials are strong with a yearend gain projected to be $78,000. December’s performance mirrors that

of October and November which gives us renewed optimism for FYE 2011.

As you are reading this, I hope you are aware of and appreciate the new Hopline format. Hopline will be sent out five times this year and you will be receiving your copies in February, April, June, August and November. Susan Baughman wants to hear from you with your comments on the new look, the new contents, the new features, etc. Feel free to email her [email protected].

The club has entered into an agreement with Boxgroove.com, replacing Private Club Network. This company has a network of private country clubs across the country (with new states and clubs joining regularly) that will allow our golf members to request and schedule tee times with a growing network of private country clubs. Boxgroove.com and their program was reviewed and approved by our golf professional, golf committee and various Board members. As you travel for business or pleasure you’ll have access to private clubs for your golf enjoyment, paying published guest fees.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for March 23, 2010. Please mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend. Remember, this is your club and we want you to hear what your club has done this year and what we have planned going forward. We are also most interested in hearing your thoughts and ideas. See you there!

Happy 2010! First off, I want to thank all of

you for your generous holiday contributions to the employee fund. The staff appreciates the member’s generosity and it certainly is a nice way to ring in the New Year.

As I enter my 8th year at Hop Meadow and my 3rd year as your Chief Operating Officer

I am very excited about the upcoming year. We have navigated through this past year rather well considering our challenges as a Club. Our membership is committed and I thank you all for supporting your Club during this past year. We experienced a 10% decline in membership as compared to the prior year due mostly to member financial hardship. I am hopeful that many of the members who were forced to leave will be able to return as well as continuing to see new families join in 2010. We had 21 new families join in 2009 and 2 new small business partners, XL Center and Fox61. They are all a wonderful addition to the Club family. Please be sure to introduce yourselves to any new faces you see around the Clubhouse.

Our team is set for 2010 and everyone is returning. Erick Holm, our Golf Course Superintendent will be entering his 8th year at Hop Meadow and his key assistant and master mechanic Bill DeMur will also be returning for his 3rd season. Jim Whiting will be returning as our Tennis Director for his 8th year and Erin Andersen will be joining him as his assistant for her 2nd summer. Steve Matyczyk will be returning for his 2nd season as our Pool & Camp Director. Jason Waters, our Head Golf Professional and his assistant Tim Kerrigan are busy planning the 2010 golf programs and will be opening the golf shop mid-March. Our food and beverage team have put together a comprehensive event calendar for 2010 to insure we have exciting and fun events for every member of the family. We will be continuing to work on delivering exceptional service to our members and fresh menu offerings in the New Year. Be sure to sample some of our new wines.

One of my primary jobs as your C.O.O. is to insure that the club mission statement is kept in the forefront as we develop programs and deliver services to you all, our members.

The Club’s mission has and continues to be to provide its members with premier recreational and social facilities and programs for golf, racquet sports, swimming, and dining; and to unite its members in bonds of friendship and good fellowship.

Please feel free to contact me any time via phone or email to share any ideas or comments. I can be reached on 860-651-0499 or email [email protected]. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Club!

Yours truly,

BUILDING OURMEMBERSHIP

As you know from prior regular communications via e-mail blasts and HopLine, we’ve run a few special programs over the last two years

specifically aimed at former members and members on Leave of Absence. Most would recognize the offerings as the Welcome Back Program. These programs were run in response to the unprecedented financial uncertainty and strain we all have felt and continue to deal with. These limited time programs were offered in an attempt to attract back our friends who had prior ties to the Club and may have more easily rejoined if we made it a “no brainer”. Both programs were necessary and successful—in terms of our intended objective. However, an unintended consequence was that some current members found it now easier to drop their membership for a time and take the chance that a similar offer would be available to them sometime down the road.

While we have no idea what the future holds relative to the macro-economic environment, we do know we have come through the last 18 months or so very well, all things considered. Our success and stability is a direct result of tremendous financial and managerial discipline by Jackie Morr and her staff as well as our membership’s continued focus on attracting new members and making sure our existing members feel, appreciate and hold value in being a part of the Hop Meadow family. All know that true country club health, vitality and camaraderie comes from attracting and retaining members for the long term. The decision to leave the Club needs to be a difficult one for two reasons: the club experience is a positive and meaningful part of their social life; and second, because there is a financial consideration relative to leaving. To that end, we will not be offering similar programs any longer. If a member is granted a LOA, it is for a year in duration. If they decide to return early they must pay back all dues, assessments and fees as if they never left. If they return after the year on the sidelines, only back assessments are due. This is consistent with the Constitution. If a member has resigned from the Club and wishes to return, they will be required to complete an application and pay an initiation fee as would any new prospective member. Make no mistake - we want these members back. However, we also want to provide maximum protection for our existing membership and the health of the Club. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me. We are all accountable to each other and need to keep membership promotion top of mind...yes, even in the winter :) Sincerely, Peter M. BlackMembership Chairman

Our club is pleased to announce its participation in the

Boxgroove.com network. Launched in June, 2009, Boxgroove.com is an online, golf network that connects serious golfers with private courses across the country.

As a participating Boxgroove club, HMCC members can now schedule tee times at private clubs across Boxgroove’s network. In just eight months time, Boxgroove.com has partnered with over 75+ private clubs from 13 states, with new clubs added each month.

The Introduction of Boxgroove.com to the market was frankly an opportunity for HMCC to reevaluate our membership in the Private Club Network--an organization joined for the

sole purpose of providing our members access to other private clubs that are part of the Private Club Network. While that organization allowed access to other private clubs for the nominal fee of $25/round, there was an annual cost to HMCC to belong. After three

years membership, we have found that the cost to the club given utilization by our members has not been justified. In the Boxgroove arrangement, HMCC members can play at participating private clubs at the published guest fee rate. We have the ability to design access to our club to attract new members from the local market and draw increased revenue from members of other private clubs visiting the area. There is absolutely no cost to HMCC. As a result, we have joined Boxgroove.com in place of renewing our Private Club Network

membership which will now expire 1/31/10.

In the next couple of weeks, you will receive another communication. It will introduce you to the Boxgroove.com service, instruct you how to activate your new membership, and describe how to navigate the robust Boxgroove.com site.

One last note, this nor participation in the Private Club Network has or would preclude you’re ability to seek assistance

from HMCC’s very own professional staff to find and secure a tee time on another course.

Your participation in Boxgroove.com is entirely optional. Further, you may, at any time, opt out of email correspondence from Boxgroove.com.

We are excited about our participation in the Boxgroove.com network and pleased that we can offer our members new and exciting golf opportunities. If you have any questions or would like additional information regarding Boxgroove.com please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Jackie Morr, [email protected]

Boxgroove.com works exclusively with private courses to…• Provide country club golfers with broad and flexible club-to-club reciprocal golf opportunities• Provide country clubs with incremental revenue stemming from reciprocal golf play• Promote country club memberships to qualified candidates

spectacular this year and attendance was premium. Everyone was dressed for a night of dancing, dining and merriment. The evening began with an open Martini bar in the Grille. Dinner and dancing were enjoyed in the Main Dining Room beneath white lights and candles. What a wonderful way to bring in the holiday with good friends, fine wine and music from Tirebiter.

Many members ask me what golf professionals in

the Northeast does in the winter to keep busy. Well, Tim and I have managed to stay busy this winter and have been developing some exciting things for the 2010 season.

The 2010 calendar for golf events is complete. We will be transferring this to the club website, but if you are anxious to get a copy, feel free

to e-mail me at [email protected] and I can e-mail you a calendar. We have kept the events calendar basically the same, but we have changed a few things that we hope will attract more members to our events. Details on these changes will come in e-mails as we get closer to the golf season.

As some of you may know, our lease with our fleet of golf cars ended this fall. For most of the fall we were working on obtaining a new lease and we had demo cars from the major brands to try out. In the end with feedback from numerous members, we determined the car we had the past five years was still the best car on the market. We have signed another deal with Club Car to provide our vehicles. In addition, we have also obtained four new work vehicles for Erick and the grounds crew to use, a new driving range vehicle, and a new beverage cart. Club Car has made significant improvements for the 2010 model we will be receiving, and as a change, we have gone away from the beige cart and selected Hunter Green. The negotiations went well and we were able to get all of these vehicles for less than our old lease.

I want to personally thank all the members that joined in the Golf Shop Partner Program. This will help me significantly buy better as I attend the PGA Golf Merchandise show at the end of January. Tim and I were very excited to order all of the spring apparel this past fall and we are looking forward to seeing what the vendors have to offer for summer and fall.

Even though the Golf Shop does not keep official hours in the winter months, Tim and I are available by appointment. If there is anything you need from us, please feel free to call the shop or send an e-mail and we would be happy to set up an appointment to meet with you.

For those of you who ski, I hope you enjoy the winter months. No offense though, I hope the snow melts fast and the global warming we always hear about comes to Connecticut sooner rather than later. Think Spring.

KEN’S KORNERDirector of Golf Instruction

Playing golf encompasses more than full swing shots or even putting, chipping

and bunker play. Course management, fitness and mental approaches to the game require just as much attention in order to improve and truly enjoy your time on the course.

I work with my students on all these aspects: the tactical as well as the mental and physical. My students – from the young to the young at heart, receive personalized, one-on-one instruction based on their expectations, physical conditioning, age and other factors they bring to the game.

In my 43 years as a teaching professional, I have learned that one method of instruction cannot apply to everyone. When we work together, you can count on a customized,

individualized approach and my commitment to help you improve your game.

My goals for you are simple and closely related – improvement in your golf scores and full enjoyment of the game. I know we can accomplish these goals together.

I offer individual private lessons, a family plan, junior lessons, group instruction (for a corporate outing or a group of friends), and

your very own Personal Golf Coach based on 20 hours of instruction throughout the season. My rates for 2010 are as follows (hourly):

Members:Adult’s $125/hrJunior’s $ 80/hr

Adult Specials:3 lessons (1 hr each) $30010 lessons (1 hr each) $900

Junior Specials:3 lessons (1 hr each) $200

WINTER ON THE GOLF COURSE

As the golf course turns over to winter, many of you might wonder,

what the golf course staff does at this time of year. Along with the plowing of the snow, the main priority is to refurbish and sharpen the mowing equipment. Bill DeMur and his assistants start the process right after Thanksgiving and can sometimes work on equipment until the middle of April before everything is ready. Given the age of the majority of our equipment, this process is extremely important to insure the equipment makes it through the next season. This requires three to four staff.

A secondary task during the winter is the removal of trees. Contributing factors for the decision to remove a tree or grouping of

trees are; the health of the adjacent turf, turf playability and shot interference (in respect to making contact with the ball), the strategic lay out of the golf course and aesthetics. In cases where a tree contributes to the golf course design (such as #13 fairway Hickory) or the overall landscape benefits, (in the case of the Maples between #2 green and the Driving Range tee) other options are considered. Most of the golf course areas where trees have been affecting turf quality have been addressed. The fifth green is still a weak spot and it is planned to remove several of the tall trees in the wooded area to the right of the approach. Though not directly on the golf course, their height shades the green from morning sun and has a direct effect on the putting surface on the far right side of the green. Removing the tallest trees will allow the sun to hit the green earlier in the morning and improve the putting surface. Early morning sun, while the soil temperatures are still cool, allows the grass to photosynthesize and produce food for itself. This is very crucial during June, July and early August as the warm daily temperatures heat up the soil too fast so when the sun finally gets to the green, the plant has effectively shut down giving it no recovery or growth potential.

As the snow is melting and you start getting the golf bug this spring, keep these thoughts in mind. We need dry weather for the course to open. To open the greens, the soil must be firm enough to support the staff and equipment to clean the surfaces (after which the greens are “walk mowed”.) The soil must also completely thaw so that a cup can be set. Opening too early increases the possibility of “foot printing” (along with “rutting” from the equipment) producing “bumpy “greens during the early part of the season. Traditionally we are able to open the upper golf holes first and the lower holes become playable a few days later. It is likely that upper greens 3-8, and 10-15 will be open first (with greens 5, 7, and 12 a possibility). In the case that a green is too wet to support traffic, we will have temporaries in place and put the green back into play as it dries out. Carts are generally available shortly after the initial opening. They are allowed on better draining holes first and where cart paths make it possible. Check with the proshop for specifics.

See you on the course.

Sincerely, Erick B. Holm, C.G.C.S.

Greetings Members!

So, what do you think about our new look? “Pretty jazzy” if you ask me. Not

unlike GQ or Vanity Fair. Anyway, it is hard to believe my eighth season with you all is just around the corner, and if the speed in which these last 8 years has passed is any indication, the summer is about an hour away, so Erin and I are already busy planning for Tennis in 2010.

We hope to have the calendar completed in a timely manner so you can plan on participating in as much Tennis as you care to. Once again we will be putting together 5 competitive teams -Men’s A and B, Women’s A and B and Juniors, along with Saturday morning Men’s, Wednesday evening Ladies Night, Adult and Junior clinics and private lessons, and 3 themed Couples Nights, complete with music on the deck. Add to that our Club Championships (dates to be determined) and you have a rough idea that June through August will be fairly busy.

We will be starting our season Memorial Day weekend with Men’s, Women’s and Junior round robins, as well as a Parent-Child event on Monday so stay tuned for details. I hope all of you are well and not too cold. I’m quite busy over at Simsmore Tennis, which reminds me-I’m due on court any minute so allow me to sign off for now.

My best to you, and remember, “Keep the ball in play and great things happen”...

For those of you that do not directly know Meghan Brady or the Brady family- her family

has belonged to Hop Meadow Country Club since 1984. Meghan has grown up in front of many of you here at Hop Meadow. Meghan and her fiancée, Michael honored us in choosing to have their Wedding Reception here at the club this past September- and oh what a wedding it was!

A wedding reception is often a reflection of the bride and groom- and their personalities, values and tastes. The Brady-Devoe Reception was no exception. This day was a celebration of life, family and love. The planning was a party to celebrate with those they are closest to- Standing room only was what the family requested… “ we’re going to be too busy having fun, no sitting down for this crowd!” per Meghan and her parents. We started the reception with bag pipers on the distant hill to welcome the bride and groom, a signature cocktail of southern lemonade and plenty of hors d’oeuvres passed. Everything was personalized at Meghan’s hand and those that loved the couple. Aunt’s decorated with flowers, pictures and memorabilia of Meghan’s and Mike’s life. A perfect menu was created by Chef Livesey that was fun and abundant- serving throughout the evening. Coffee bar, scotch flights, cupcake tower, Mike’s Buckeye cake, Ice Cream Sundae Bar and End-of-Evening Candy buffet. There was even a cigarette girl offering candy cigars and cigarettes and real for those wanting to partake in a “traditional smoke” on the deck.

It was truly a magical celebration- which was truly unforgettable. Thank you Brady Family for letting Hop Meadow Country Club help make your day a memorable one. We, I am truly honored.

As you all know me, I take a personal interest in planning all of my events. I feel that this building, Hop Meadow, is an extension of your home, and I will continue to personalize and take a vested interest in all of your events that you have here at home- here at Hop Meadow.

Tastefully yours,

Beth [email protected]

BON APPETITEWe are all very happy to be back in the kitchen. We have many exciting

things in store for you to keep the winter blues away. From the casual Super Bowl Party on February 7th to the Formal Founders dining on Valentine’s Day to the Louisiana inspired dinner specials to enhance the smooth southern style Jazz Night of the Eric Ducoff Band on January 29th, we have something for everyone.

This year will be a year of firsts for Hop Meadow with many new activities planned, and to kick this theme off, we will begin to share some of our favorite recipes with you. Being one of our top selling entrees for quite some time, I feel that the recipe for the Chicken Auberge is most appropriate.

Chicken Auberge Recipe:8 boneless skinless chicken breasts1 ½ cup grated parmesan cheese½ cup flour1 stick butter1 dozen eggs1 pound steamed asparagus½ pound lobster meat (or crab meat, if preferred)1 tsp. dill2 T capers1 batch Buerre Blanc (recipe follows)Salt and pepper

1 large nonstick frying panWaxed paperCookie sheet

Mix the flour with 1 cup of the grated parmesan and salt and pepper to taste in a bowl large enough for the chicken. Add the chicken and coat well and set aside. Meanwhile, in another bowl, whip the eggs with some salt and pepper and set aside. Take the cookie sheet covered with waxed paper and dust it with half of the remaining parmesan cheese and set aside. Preheat the frying pan and butter to medium heat and, working one piece of chicken at a time, take the coated chicken into the egg mix into the pan. Cook just long enough on both sides so the egg coating turns a light shade of tan. Then place it on the cheese coated wax paper. After all the chicken is coated and seared sprinkle

the remaining parmesan on top. The chicken is still raw at this point and will keep a day or two in the refrigerator. To finish, bake in a 350 or 375 degree oven until done. Top with lobster, asparagus, capers, dill and Buerre Blanc and serve immediately.

For Buerre Blanc:1 cup white wine1 shallot, chopped1 bay leaf1 lemon½ pound butter1 cup heavy cream or whipping cream

In a saucepan add the wine, shallot, and bay leaf and simmer until almost all the liquid has evaporated. Be careful not to burn this; keep an eye on it. When it is thick and syrupy add the cream and continue to reduce until the cream is quite thick and you can see the pan through the bubbles. Turn off the heat and slowly whisk in the butter, one dab at a time, until all the butter is incorporated. Finish it with a squeeze of the lemon and a little salt and pepper and Presto! Buerre Blanc. This sauce does not keep and cannot be reheated so it must be made right before serving.

Of course this recipe is just a guide and Hop Meadow is in no way responsible for any thing that may go wrong. Chicken Auberge is best left to the professionals, but I would love to hear your stories on how it turned out.

Until next time, bon appetite!Chef Aaron

Patz & Hall Chardonnay 2007… Napa $60Exhibits a rich, layered mix of ripe pear, fig, melon and honeysuckle flavors that are intense yet polished, firm and concentrated. The long, lingering finish repeats the fruit themes, with a hint of butterscotch. *Wine Spectator gave it 93 points.

New England is at the forefront of the micro brew revolution, and now that specialty beers are enjoying a resurgence, there’s no better place to enjoy a brew than your very own Hop Pub. On tap we will keep a few of the favorites but we’ll also be switching the others on a regular basis. A great way to try new beers and find out which beer is for you is our new Beer Flights, served on your own paddle. Enjoy 5oz of 4 different beers on tap for $5.50

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions about our new wine menu, beers on tap, specialty drinks, or how awful my handicap is. And please email me or speak with me about any suggestions for your pub!!
