Welcome to the first issue of the Mangakahia Hook n Bang

newsletter.

It is intended to publish this several times a year highlighting

points of interest and providing key information.

What is the Hook ‘n’ Bang competition?

Hook n Bang is an annual hunting & fishing team competition.

Each team can comprise up to 5 team members and competes

across five species – duck, goat, boar, snapper, pheasant. 4 of

the 5 species must be presented for weigh in to be eligible for

competition points.

The competition is co-ordinated by the Mangakahia Community

and Sports Complex but is very much a community event with

significant involvement from Titoki Playcentre, Poroti Tavern &

Poroti Outdoors Club.

Weigh In May 2016

The 2016 Hook n Bang competition was held from May 19th to

21st with weigh in held on the final day at Poroti Tavern.

We had 15 teams registered this year and despite some

variable weather conditions during the competition, 11 teams

presented game for weigh in. There was considerable review

and discussion by teams and supporters as each new set of

game was weighed in and displayed….many tales were traded

and no doubt there were several winners that only just got away

during the hunt & fish …………

And the 2016 winner is …..

Then after the last goat horn was measured and the last boar

was weighed and the points were counted ….

Parakao Pissahs – 1st

place – 312 points

The final results – congratulations to all teams

Prizegiving 21st May 2016

And then it was time for the teams and supporters to come

together and celebrate. A few beers, a lot of laughs, and great

camaraderie… plus a few presentations to make ….

There was only one contender for the Hard Luck prize this year

and it is a heart breaking story.

Weigh in was between 2pm to 4 pm on the final day of

competition. Some teams were already waiting for weigh in to

begin and during the 2 hour window a couple of teams

voluntarily withdrew from the weigh in.

However, at 3:55 pm there was still no sign of Naughty North,

who had been prize winners in previous years. 4 pm passed

and weigh in was officially closed.

At 4:02 pm Naughty North arrived ….so close but sadly ineligible for weigh in and competition points……..

So the Hard Luck prize was awarded to Naughty

North for being 2 minutes late

But credit due to Naughty North who showed great

sportsmanship and stayed on to celebrate with the other teams.

I’m sure we will see this team again next year.

A special mention goes out to our fabulous MC – Philippa
