printing the pattern:To print the pattern, set your computer to print pages 14-16. If you’re unfamiliar with printing and assembling a .pdf pattern, read the steps below.

1At the print dialog box, check the box that says print at “Actual Size” or 100%. Any other selection (such as “Fit to page”) will distort the pattern so it’s slightly larger or smaller and we don’t want that.

4 5To line up the pattern pages, match up the corresponding diamond shapes. Each diamond will have a letter, so it’s simply a matter of matching A1 to A2, B3 to B4 and so on. The faint gray lines indicate the border of every page, you should be able to line those up as well. When the diamond goes together, tape it in place. If you have many pages, it’s easier to tape up the pages into rows first. Then tape the rows together into a full block.

You can trace the patterns onto a different paper, or you can also just cut them straight from the printer paper -- be sure that each piece is fully taped together along the joins so they don’t fall apart when you cut them.

3It’s likely your printer will have a margin that ensures your image doesn’t print to the very edge. Assembly will be easier if you trim off this blank margin edge. This will give you pages that overlap slightly during assembly. If you trim across the gray outline boxes, this will give you pages that don’t overlap but rather butt against each other.

2Print the pages needed for the file. You might have one or more. Either way, be sure you have the full collection by noting the page numbers in the corner.

Place pattern on the fabric, and make sure the grain line is parallel to the selvedges. Each end of the line should be equally distant to the selvedge.

Pin the pattern in place, use pattern weights, or trace the outline of the pattern with a washable marker.

Using the paper as a template, cut out the fabric. Cut the required amount according to the pattern.

• Grab your wing pieces (D). Take two of them and align them with right sides facing and raw edges matching up

• Sew around the perimeter of the wing using a ⅜” seam allowance, but leave the short straight edge free for turning the wing right side out later.

• Once complete, trim the excess seam allowance around the sharp corners and curves to reduce bulk and increase flexibility for turning. Turn the wing right side out through the opening and define the corners with a chopstick or similar blunt tool. Repeat this with the remaining two wing pieces for two complete wings total.

• To trace the wing lines for the dragon wing, I suggest using the paper pattern as a tracing template. Trim the wing pattern along the upper line and align it with the rest with the sewn wing. Trace the line along the edge with chalk or a fabric pen. Repeat for the other wing.

• Trim off the remaining lines one by one to use those as templates as well. Once again repeat for the other wing so you always have a pair. Once complete, sew a slightly longer than average straight stitch over the traced lines to complete the wing top stitching.

• Grab your back spike pieces (E). Align the two together with right sides facing and raw edges matching up.

• To accurately sew all the sharp corners in the spikes, I suggest using the paper pattern as a template. Trim the seam allowance off the paper pattern and trace the edges onto the fabric with chalk or a fabric pencil.

• Sew the spikes together along the traced line, pivoting at each corner.

• Trim the excess seam allowance at each curve to decrease bulk and clip the seam allowance at each corner to increase flexibility. Turn the spikes right side out and press lightly.

• Grab the back piece of your hoodie. Take your finished wings and align the open edge with the center back edge of the back piece. Make sure the tips are pointing downward. The edge should be aligned about 6" from the top. Stack the second wing on top.

• Baste the wings in place within the seam allowance to hold for the next step.

• Take your finished back spikes and align the open edge right below the wings. Make sure the spikes are pointing downward.

construct your hoodie• From here, continue with constructing the hoodie as usual.• Stop just after the point where the hood front is sewn.

• Baste the back spikes to the hoodie back piece just like with the wings.

• Take your remaining hoodie back piece and layer it over the first with right sides facing and raw edges matching up.

• Sew the back pieces together along this edge (with the wings and back spikes sandwiched in between). Use a ⅝" seam allowance just like with the rest of the main hoodie pieces.

5. sew the back pieces

• Take your fusible web and trace all your applique pieces onto the smooth (paper) side. You should have 2 eyes, 2 pupils, and 2 eye shines.

• Fuse the bumpy (adhesive) side onto the wrong side of your applique fabric. The pupils go onto black, the eyes on green fabric, and the eye shines on white.

• Cut out the eye pieces and arrange them on the hood front piece, centered horizontally. Each eye is about 1" away from the center seam.

• Fuse the eye pieces in place with your iron. Next, move onto the smaller pupil and eye shine pieces. Fuse them much the same way as you did the eyes, using the paper pattern and photos as a guide.

• If you used heavy duty fusible web, you can keep the pieces fused without sewing, or you can sew them in place a number of ways. I’ve used a satin stitch here.

→ Refer to the next step for some other applique options.

7. sew the applique

add irises and eye shines next

right side of zigzag lands just outside applique

Other good options for applique include a straight stitch, which involves sewing around the edge of the applique pieces with a straight stitch using matching thread -- about 1/8” in from the edge.

You can also applique by hand; I prefer a whipstitch. Thread a hand-sewing needle with some matching thread and knot it. Bring the thread up from the back of the project; about 1/8” in from the edge of the applique shape. Bring it down perpendicular from the curve, just outside of the applique shape. This completes one stitch.

For the next stitch, bring the needle back up about 1/8” away from the previous stitch and 1/8” in from the edge just as in the first stitch. Once again, bring it down just outside the applique shape. Continue this way until you’ve sewn around the shape.

construct your hoodie• Continue with the rest of the hoodie as usual from here.• Stop when you get to the point just after sewing the sleeves.

• Grab your large and small head spike pieces (A & B). Take two of them and align them with right sides facing and raw edges matching up.

• Sew them together along the long curved edge, leaving the short straight edge free for turning right side out. Repeat with the remaining spike pieces so you have 6 spikes total: 4 large and 2 small.

• Trim the excess seam allowance around the curve to reduce bulk.

8. sew the head spikes

• Turn all the spikes right side out. You should have four complete large spikes and two complete small spikes. Press them lightly with your iron.

• Grab your hood front piece and align the open edges of the spikes along the shorter edge of the hood front (the side with the notches if using my pattern). Space two large spikes about ½” away from the center seam. Space the last two large spikes 3” away from the outer edge. Align the smaller spikes right next to the two outer spikes. All the spikes should have their points pointing towards the center of the hood.

• Sew the ends of the spikes in place within the ⅝” seam allowance in preparation for attaching it to the hood back.

• Flatten the hoodie out so the back is smooth. Flatten out the wings you've sewn back in step 4.

• Stitch the wings in place by sewing over the top stitched upper line from before. Stop before you get to the arm holes, and this will give your dragon wings some freedom to flutter.

• Grab your horn pieces (C) in both the main fabric and flex foam. If you haven’t already, be sure that the bottom seam allowance is trimmed off the horns from your flex foam. This will reduce bulk later.

• If you have fusible flex foam, take this moment to fuse it to the wrong side of each of your horn fabric pieces. If not, simply stack the foam on the wrong side of the fabric and treat it as one piece for the next part.

• Take two of your horn pieces and align them with right sides facing and raw edges matching up.

10. anchor the wings

11. prep the horns

note:If you don't have flex foam stabilizer, that's

fine! I just find it provides a professional finish.

If you're working without it, just use extra stuffing in step 12 to fill and stabi-

• Sew around the long curved edge of the horn, leaving the short straight edge free for turning the horn right side out. Repeat with the remaining foam pieces and horn pieces to create two horns total.

• Stuff the horns lightly with stuffing so they keep their shape. Don’t overdo it, however, since you want them to remain light.

→ If you're not using flex foam, you'll need to use more stuffing. But try to prevent the horns from getting lumpy or overstuffed.

• Thread a hand sewing needle and weave the thread back and forth about ¼” per stitch around the opening of the horn. This is a hand sewn gathering stitch.

• Tug at the thread to cinch up the opening so it closes. Sew a few knots across the cinched opening to hold the horn shut. If you have a lot of thread leftover, consider keeping it attached for adding to the hood later.

12. sew the horns

13. cinch the hornsgathering:

• Arrange the horns just beside the spikes found at the top of the hood. The shorter side of the horn should point towards the center of the hood. The side seams of the horns should match up with the side seams of the hood as well.

• Grab your threaded needle and sew around the horn doing a ladder stitch. Take a ⅛” stitch into the bottom of the horn, then go across and take another stitch into the hood. Keep going around the horn until you reach the end.

• When you’re finished, stitch a knot into the end of the seam. Then insert the needle near the finished knot and out of the horn about 1-2” away. Pull the thread through and hold it taut while snipping the thread. The excess thread should sink back inside the horn -- all hidden! Repeat with the other horn on the other side of the hood to complete the hoodie!
