for the nAture lover – BAviAAnskloof Wilderness AreA

The Baviaans region in the Eastern Cape is becoming an increasingly sought-after destination, although it still remains one of South Africa’s best kept secrets. The Baviaanskloof itself is a world heritage site and includes seven of South Africa’s eight biomes. Being only an hour and a half from Port Elizabeth and George it is also vastly accessible.

The area consists of five regions nl: Steytlerville, Grootriver Valley, Willowmore, the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve and the Grootriverpoort. The areas form a circle route which varies from 4x4 only roads to dirt and tar roads, through valleys, mountains and quaint Karoo towns. Attached is an example of such a tour.

There is currently only one tour operator who runs tours through the area. Pepi van der Merwe owns a guesthouse in Willowmore and operates circle route tours which include two nights accommodation.

The Baviaanskloof has numerous accommodation options varying from rustic to 5 star. There are furnished caves to sleep in, tree houses and chalets and lodges. Activities such as hiking, mountain biking, bird watching and 4x4ing abound. The area is largely untouched and offers visitors an experience closer to nature than most people have ever been.

the Baviaanskloof Mega-reserve is only accessible with a 4x4 vehicle and although is only around 100km, the journey takes six hours to complete. This is the most beautiful part of our area and takes tourists through lush valleys and towering mountains, criss-crossing natural springs. Within the Mega-reserve one also finds a large variety of wildlife including cheetahs and rhinos. Although there is no formal accommodation within the reserve, there are three campsites where one comes as close to nature as possible.

Willowmore is a town steeped in history and lends itself to cosy weekends spent next to the fire relating folklore and recalling stories of a bygone era. As architecturally precious as its surrounding towns Willowmore boasts a host of interesting nooks and crannies and offers weary travellers a place to rejuvenate both body and soul. The area is currently the largest Mohair producing region in the world.

The Grootriver valley boasts a game reserve and various other accommodation types on farms, lodges, camping and cabins. All have their own collections of buck species and farming activities.

steytlerville showcases a host of architectural gems like quaint Edwardian- and Victorian-era houses with tin roofs and large street-facing verandas complete with broekie lace and stained glass windows. The town also has the largest Edwardian-style church in the Southern Hemisphere. One of the best towns the Karoo has to offer, Steytlerville with its bougainvillea-lined streets and horse-drawn carts is a diamond waiting to be discovered.

The Grootrivierpoort serves as the Eastern gateway to the Baviaanskloof and the 115km takes four hours to complete with the scenery varying from bushveld to that which resembles the Scottish Highlands. The area is completely untouched and there is no accommodation along the way.

Lindi van Rooyen is the Tourism Officer at Baviaans Tourism Office situated in Steytlerville and can be contacted for further information as follows:

Spirits of the PastIt’s a story that must be heard - a past that captures the imagination of visitors, and the idea that somehow, we all have an ancient and personal investment in the area that explains its magic - of frontier wars, pioneering spirits and heroic people bound together by indomitable determination and gritty humour.

During the 1800’s the intrepid British Settlers, Irish immigrants and European explores left their shores to begin a new life on the southernmost region of the African continent - region of the spiritual San people and mighty amaXhosa. What awaited them in this region of wide horizons eclipsed their wildest imaginings.

Recapture the Spirits of the Past with renowned historian and raconteur Alan Weyer, whose captivating narrative of this region’s proud history of spectacular battles and courageous people will add a new dimension to a visit to the Eastern Cape.

Combined with a visit to one of the region’s magnificent game/nature reserves, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Visualise the enormity of this accident. Gaze down into the breathtaking chasm; experience the loneliness of the gorge. Hear the stories from Ben Bezuidenhout, of bravery and heartbreak, also of great courage and faith. Follow the account of little Maud Smith and her three-year-old-brother Willie. Stand at the edge of this bridge and visualise the rescue attempts.

How did it happen? What were the causes? What were the findings? Hear stories of some of the myths and legends that have arisen since the train disaster. Discuss over refreshments provided as part of the tour, what this disaster must have taken out of the community.

Visit the cemeteries where the train victims are buried and leave the tour with vivid memories and a book on the disaster, as a memento of your visit to the Blaauwkrantz Railway Bridge.

Walking distance is approximately 500 metres from the bus to the bridge and back; it’s an easy walk on flat ground. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars if you have them.

If you only have a short time to spare, the walking tours are an excellent way to absorb Grahamstown’s interesting history. The art of storytelling conveys the history behind the buildings, their past and their inhabitants. Each walk lasts about an hour and a half. They are conducted at a leisurely pace, and you’ll be accompanied by a guide in full Victorian dress!

Choose from one of the following:Saints, Sinners and Students, which imparts the early history of Grahamstown, and visits one chapel, (Chapel of St Mary and All Angels now simply called the Rhodes Chapel) in the grounds of the former Grahamstown Training College, two jails and Rhodes University.

Stately Homes & Old School Ties, which visits two of the oldest schools in the area - 150-year-old St Andrew’s College, and DSG (Diocesan School for Girls) - as well as a number of Victorian

homes that were designed by an amateur architect in various strange but interesting styles. The tour also includes the oldest working post box in South Africa - Worcester Street.

Historic Heart visits the centre of Grahamstown, and leaves from the Observatory Museum. It covers the growth of the town from a military site to a thriving “city” (because the Cathedral of St Michael and St George). The second largest city in the Cape Colony with the tallest spire boasted a number of newspapers, an academic robe factory and a Supreme Court before the army and fortune hunters (off to the diamond and gold fields) moved out. The entrance fee to the Observatory Museum is an extra R8.

lAMMerGeier-JozAnA trAnsfrontier nAture reserve – lAdy Grey

The Lammergeier Private Nature Reserve accommodation and adventure trails are situated near the southeastern part of the Drakensberg, commonly known as the Witteberg. We are situated between Lady Grey and Barkly East in the Eastern Cape and cover an area of some 25000hectares. Ranging in altitude from 1500m, our lowest riverbed, to 2750m, which is the highest mountain peak on the reserve called Snowdon, with spectacular views from the mountain peaks and in the valley gorges.

On arrival our guests are greeted at Reception and provided with map and necessary information for their activities or are escorted to their ‘home’.

Certain hiking trails are marked while others are GPS orientated. These run through kloofs, river crossings, up on the plateaus and up onto mountain ridges with beautiful scenery. The Karringmelkspruit affords plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sparkling waters – some 13 km of pristine wild trout waters and in summer we wait for the rains, so that the long waited tubing ‘games’ can begin. We regularly see sightings of the Lammergeier, Cape Vulture and Black Eagle as well as many other bird varieties too numerous to mention. A longstanding policy of organic farming has been followed, where no pesticides and herbicides are used, which has increased the bird and wildlife dramatically.

The Isted family has been awarded the Prestigious Grasslands Society of South Africa “Conservation Farmer of the Year “ Award for 1997.

Activities include: Mountain Biking, 4 x 4 Off Road Trails, Quad Biking, Fly Fishing, Team Building, Water Activities, Adventure Racing, Horse Trails and Birding.

St Francis Links Golf CourseThe layout of the St Francis Links Course combines every element of shot making with its undulating terrain, greens and surrounds as well as its variation in length and direction. The bunkers look as though they have been simply plowed out of the land. It is the bunkering that truly defines the quality and character of St Francis Links. Others have designed and built courses with a links look. Here you will easily see what separates St Francis Links from the rest - a consistent look throughout. Almost from the opening shot, St Francis Links carries a look and feel that breathes history from times gone by.

The shape of the greens comes from the natural movement of the land. The greens have simply been placed on top of the sand, changing shape in construction as the wind changed its mind. Some are more undulating than others. All putting surfaces and green surrounds at St Francis Links present a mental and physical test.

FacilitiesThe club house overlooks the picturesque St Francis Bay village, with its thatch roofs and quaint white homes. It is a fabulous setting for a late afternoon cup of tea or for a thirst quencher after a round of golf. Besides The Links Restaurant, Jack’s Bar and our halfway house, the facility also offers two lounges, the golf shop and locker rooms for players.

Practice Facilities280m driving range with twenty hitting bays, bunkers, putting green as well as target areas. Demonstration equipment from our major suppliers will be available. Lessons with our PGA Team, headed by 2-time PGA Club Professional of the year, Jeff Clause, may be booked in advance. Come and Share an experience of this beloved landmark in Stutterheim, Listen to the stories of days gone by, in a friendly environment at the foot of the pristine indigenous Kologha Forest with its magical waterfalls, and be amazed!

Eagles Ridge is where art, culture, hospitality and development find harmony in a friendly, welcoming environment. We offer visitors a memorable experience and an opportunity to rejuvenate in one of Stutterheim’s most enchanting settings with an unsurpassed view and proximity to the indigenous forest. Interwoven with the rustic-urban character of Eagles Ridge, there is a Xhosa influence, which on the surface might seem to be merely aesthetic, however on a deeper level is a tribute to the Xhosa culture, native to our area.

You are invited to explore our rambling garden with lawns sweeping down to a wetland bird sanctuary where the peacefulness is truly tangible, where viewing outdoor ceramic artworks along the way.

Our Licensed Restaurant-Art Gallery serves lovingly prepared Euro-Africa Fusion Cuisine, complimented by fresh, organic seasonal vegetables from our garden whenever possible. The Art on display is mostly locally produced and includes many of the ceramic creations of the Free Wings Art Studio.

Eagles Ridge offers a selection of accommodation units. Each unit has been individually decorated and is unique in style, yet offering access to the same amenities throughout.

The decor of the rooms must receive special mention, as each unit has been given its own unique flair and character. While the flavour is arty with a touch of eccentricity, an ethnic feel throughout with no diminishing of the comfort factor as this is of ultimate importance to us. Each bathroom has been artistically sculpted or carved and brought to life with mosaic art by Artist Coenie Strydom. These walls each tell their own mysterious story.

Known to some as ‘simply paradise’, Khusela is unique. Developed as a private conservation reserve, some of South Africa’s most endangered, threatened and protected species are now free to roam safely without predators. The thatched South Africa luxury villa was designed by the internationally renowned architect Francois Thereon for the English owners and completed in 2006.The game reserve and villa is are now available as an exclusive letting to discerning guests who are looking for something more than a tourist game lodge or conventional villa for their South Africa luxury holiday.

Khusela offers a number of game viewing options. Our experienced ranger will introduce you to the flora and fauna of the reserve by way of game drives and walks at times to suit you. Our Toyota Landcruiser has been equipped to accommodate guests for game drives, alternatively smaller groups can explore the reserve driving our two seater 4x4 Yamaha Rhinos - always a great hit with everyone! There are many walking trails varying in degrees of difficulty from the easy paths across the veldt to the steeper valley paths. Because there are no predators at Khusela guests are free to walk the trails and paths unaccompanied providing a unique ‘African bush’ experience not available in any of the Big Five reserves, or of course they can ask the ranger to accompany them. The game is very relaxed with people and this frequently provides close encounters with some of the animals, both on foot and from vehicles. Guests can accompany the ranger on his daily visits to our concealed camera traps which reveal the activities of the night - the honey badger was thought to be extinct in the area until we recorded them on our cameras!

The thatched villa is designed to blend with the surrounding bush and is positioned to take full advantage of the arc of the sun. Surrounded by a fenced garden and built around a central open courtyard, the villa nestles between Middle Ridge and Olive Ridge providing amazing views over the gorge. The 10 x 3 mtr infinity edge pool proves to be a great spot for raptor watching, as well as providing views over the veldt, dam and gorge.
