An Introduction to our past… from @ 1870s onward…

Expectations:• Good News! :In this course you will take COPIUS notes!!

We have lots of places to see and people to meet!• Take it in as a long running story with lots of different

“chapters” in our nation’s history. • Try to imagine “living” in the times we study…• You will be assessed through a quiz each week • Get to take A test @every 2 weeks!• But wait, there’s more!• Research Papers and various group projects await

you….and if you are really lucky (good/well behaved)…maybe even a final FUN Project worth 2 Chunky Test grades!!!

Units of Study

• The Progressive Era and 1900s Immigration• The Spanish American War Era• World War One• Roaring Twenties• Prohibition• The Great Depression• World War II

Our course begins near the end of the 19th Century….

• Names like Bell, Sholes, Edison, Bessemer…• 1. Which one perfected the incandescent light

bulb? (Bonus…what state did he work in?)• 2. Who patented the telephone? • 3. Who invented the typewriter?• 4. Which of these three inventions was first?

Answers…..

• 1. Light Bulb: Thomas Alva Edison. Patented in 1880, The State was NJ!

• 2. Telephone: Alexander Graham Bell; 1876• 3. Typewriter: Christopher Sholes; 1867• 4. Typewriter!

We explore the time of the 1900s immigrants:

• When many of them came in through Ellis Island on the East coast or through the West Coast immigration station…

• 1. What was the West coast’s main immigration place called?

• Encounter terms like “nativism”, “melting pot”and “Gentlemen’s Agreement” and “Exclusion Act”2. Which of the above terms limited Japanese

immigration in 1908? Clue: Be civilized…..

Answers….• 1. Angel Island saw large numbers of Chinese

come in….

• 2. The Gentlemen’s Agreement saw Japan’s govt. agree to limit the number of unskilled workers in exchange for a repeal of a nasty segregation law San Francisco had put in place.

And you think your parents are too nosy now?! In the 1900s: We examine

life in a Tenement.

Look at life in a 1900s neighborhood

What is a clue that this is an early 1900s city street?

Hanging out with friends…Pre Internet:

• What clues tell you these kids are poor?• And in case you think you hate sitting through classes now… in

the 1900s this was your fate:

WORK!!!!

Where do you think these boys might work? Name a clue….

Progressives do some “muckraking”, thanks to a book, a president and lots of news stories, photos and cartoons.

Thankfully; in 1906 We wake up and clean up our workplaces, food, drugs and actually begin to require accurate labels on food!

We see how Girl power and sacrifice you get this right in 1919:

We find out about Flappers, How Capone got rich thanks to a new law, and why the Twenties were Roaring!

Moving on …we cover some of the many American wars/conflicts….

• 1. The Spanish American War….. Can you name a Spanish speaking island we kept from that war? (En Espanol por favor)

• 2. We Figure out why dough boys are not made of bread… (what war were they from? )

• 3. See How a telegram came one hour too late to save a fleet!.... Do you know where? (Hint: “Tora Tora Tora”)

American Conflict answers:

During this course we see a great Crash then get really depressed:

On the hopeful side we meet some Great Influential Americans like…

We examine how we were dragged into the biggest war in history….

Then finished it…

By the End of U.S. History 1….…handshakes all around ….and other celebrations to end the biggest war in

history setting us up for the “chilly” war called the….
