Satisfies GER for History HON 312 (3 sh) Travel Abroad: Spring Term This course involves classroom study, reading, lectures, and site visits. Past travel sites have included Croatia, Greece, Peru, Athens, Rome, and London. SENIOR YEAR: CAPSTONE HON 411 (3 sh) Senior Reflections: Fall Term This course will facilitate the development of our students’ lifelong learning experiences with particular emphasis on the connections between their chosen vocation/career and the ways in which the University of Mount Olive has played a part in their decisions. HON 412 (3 sh) Senior Research: Spring Term This course is designed for students to develop a project in their major, service, or a special interest. They may work individually or in groups. An oral presentation will be required. “All Honors students are members of the club which conducts service projects like Habitat for Humanity, delivering Thanksgiving thank you cards to military troops, singing Christmas carols at nursing homes, planting trees on campus, and more. Club members also participate in social events such as cook-outs at the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park, beach trips, and more.” —Michael Munoz

The Honors Program at the University of Mount Olive is offered to advance students’ development of a sense of the unity of knowledge implicit in a liberal arts education and collaborative scholarly community. Honors courses are more academically rigorous to challenge and help students grow in their learning. Furthermore, the Honors Program offers students additional opportunities for collaboration and the development of a sense of community through seminars, forums, and projects.

While the typical honors student has a high school GPA of at least 3.75 and a minimum SAT of 1150 or ACT of 25, all students (including college transfers) who have fewer than 45 semester-hours of academic credit may apply for admittance into the University of Mount Olive Honors Program. All UMO Presidental Scholarship recipients automatically quality for admittance. Once admitted into the Honors Program, the student must:

• Complete a minimum of 30 semester hours each academic year• Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.20 (3.00 if a freshman) at the end of each academic year• Actively participate in the Honors Program and community• Register for and earn a C or better in at least one Honors course each academic semester

HON 111 (3 sh) Great Ideas: Fall TermAn exploration of the liberal arts responses to the perennial questions of being, including major Western philosophic, religious, and scientific discourse. Satisfies GER for ENG 111

HON 112 (3 sh) Great Works: Spring TermAn intensive study of the canonical works of literature, which have shaped Western culture, including critical analysis and research components. Satisfies GER for ENG 112

SOPHOMORE YEAR:AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES: BECOMING A BETTER CITIZEN

HON 211 (3 sh) State & Regional Issues: Fall TermThis interdisciplinary course includes in depth exploration and intensive research on state and regional issues. Satisfies a GER requirement for Social/Behavioral Science

HON 212 (3 sh) National Issues: Spring TermThis interdisciplinary course includes in depth exploration and intensive research on issues facing America. Satisfies a GER for Citizenship

The Honors Program curriculum is designed to enhance students’ learning in the liberal arts and within their major. The junior honors class includes a travel abroad component. As part of the curriculum, students research and carefully choose a country they want to learn about and visit.
