1.ProgramOverview1.1Introduction TheHonorsPrograminGeneralEducationcurrentlyserves335students.MoststudentsapplyfortheHonorsProgramasincomingstudents.Theprogramalsoenrollsasmallernumberoftransferstudents.Studentsareeligiblefortheprogramistheyhaveanyoneofthefollowing:cumulativehighschoolGPAof3.5orgreater,anSATscoreof1200,anACTcompositescoreof27orhigher.Studentsapplyviaanonlineapplicationandareacceptedonarollingadmissionsbasis.StudentswhorequestHonorsHousingareguaranteedaplaceonthe2floorsofHonorsHousinginSutterHall.Recruitmenttotheprogram.TheHonorsProgramparticipatesin“ChicoPreview”heldonaSaturdayinOctoberand“ChooseChico”whichtakesplaceonaSaturdayinApril.OurrecruitmentiscarriedoutincooperationwiththeAdmissionsOffice.InformationabouttheprogramiscontainedinpromotionalmaterialssentoutbytheAdmissionsOffice.Inaddition,theHonorsProgramobtainsalistofHonorseligibleapplicantswhothenreceiveanemailinvitationtoapplytotheHonorsProgram.Inaddition,theHonorsProgramsendsoutpromotionalmaterialincludingourrecentlyupdatedHonorsProgrambrochure.StudentsareinvitedtoperusetheHonorsProgramwebsiteandifinterested,applythroughouronlineapplication.TheHonorsProgramalsowelcomesoncampusvisits.StudentsandparentsarewelcometomakeappointmentstodiscussthebenefitsoftheHonorsProgramandtheundergraduateexperienceatCSU,Chico.TheWomen’sCross-Countrycoach,GaryTownsend,bringsbyanumberofthestudent/athleteprospectstohearabouttheHonorsProgram.SummerOrientation–TheHonorsProgramhasadailypresenceatSummerOrientationwithtablingandadvisingpriortofallregistrationforfirsttimestudentsandtransferstudents.TriciaSweet,whohastaughtinHonorsformorethan25yearsandservesasHonorsAdvisor,aswell,isthecontactpersonatSummerOrientation.TheHonorsProgramhasaconcertedandcoordinatedefforttohelpourstudentswithfirsttimeregistrationandHonorsHousingstartinginthefallandcontinuingthroughtheendofSummerOrientationinJuly.TheHonorPrograminGEalsocomplementsthe32departmentalHonorsintheMajorProgramsbyprovidingcertificatesandmedallionstoindividualdepartmentsfortheirgraduatingstudents.
1.2PreviousProgramReviewsTheHonorsinGEProgramhasnothadanexternalreviewinrecentyears.However,acommitteecomprisedofCSU,ChicofacultymembersservedastheHonorsReviewandRedesignCommitteeduringtherevampingoftheHonorscurriculum.TheHonorsProgramReviewandRedesignReport(thisdocumentcanbefoundinthe5YearReviewfolder)wassubmittedtotheAcademicSenateinspringof2012outliningthenewHonorsProgramCurriculum.ThisreviewandredesignoftheHonorsProgramGeneralEducationtookplacetheyearfollowingtheoverallredesignofGeneralEducationatCSU,Chico.Theredesigngoalsweretomakethe24unitsofHonorscoursesfitaswellaspossibleintotheexisting10Pathwaystructure,facilitatingstudentswhowereinterestedincompletingtheirHonorscourserequirementwhilepursuingPathwayminors.TheHonorinGEPlanningSheetshowstheassociationbetweenHonorscoursesandPathways.1.3MissionStatementMission:TheUniversityHonorsProgramprovidesaninterdisciplinaryapproachtotheUniversityEducationthroughchallenging,engagingandenrichinglearningexperiencesthatenablestudentstobecomeresponsible,imaginative,andengagedglobalcitizens.Ourprogramfostersastrongsenseofintellectualcommunitycharacterizedbyreason,respect,artisticgrowth,academicexcellence,andopennessofexpression.Weareopentostudentsofallacademic,cultural,ethnic,andreligiousbackgroundswhohavetheambition,curiosity,andpassionforacademicandintellectualgrowthandexcellence.Ourcoursesreflectourmutualunderstandingthatexperientialeducationisessentialfortruelearning,andwethereforeofferopportunitiesforstudyinsideandoutsidetheclassroomincludingco-curricularexperiences,serviceengagements,andsocialinteractions.Weholddearthevaluesofmulticulturalrespect,awarenessandunderstandingandweadheretotheprinciplesandpracticesofsustainabilitythroughnurturingakeensenseofplaceandstewardshipofthenaturalworld.Goals&Objectives:1.TobecomeamodelprogramofinterdisciplinarygeneraleducationforotherCSUcampusesandbeyond.2.Tocreateandsustainlearningenvironmentsthatfosterhighlevelsofstudentengagement,participation,andresponsibilityinlearning.4.Torecruitdriven,interestedstudentswithanaptitudeanddesireforintellectualgrowthandacademicexcellence.5.Toencouragecommunity-engagedstudentresearch.
6.Topromotesustainabilityandastrongsenseofstewardshipforthelocalenvironsandbeyond.1.4ProgramLearningOutcomesHonorsstudentswillengageinmultidisciplinaryapproachestosubjectsofvaryingdegreesofscope,fromthebroadlowerdivisionseminarstothefocusedandindepthupperdivisionseminars.Honorsstudentswilldeveloptheirwritingskillsasaresultoftherichwritingintensivecurriculum.Honorsstudentwillpracticecriticalthinkinginthecontextofcomplexideasandconceptsthatarerifewithambiguity.Inotherwords,Honorsstudentwilllearnhowtohandledeepquestionswithnosimpleanswers.Honorsstudentswilldemonstrateoriginalscholarshipintheirwritingsthatwillculminatewiththecompletionandpresentationoftheiryear-longHonorsThesis/Projectduringtheirsenioryear.Honorsstudentswilllearnself-directedlearningpracticesandhabitstoencouragelife-longgrowthandcontinuedcuriositytoleadarichlife.1.5ProgramDiversityTheflexibleadmissionsprocessfortheHonorsinGeneralEducationProgramisdesignedtoallowadiverserangeofstudentstoparticipate.TheadmissionscriteriaarebasedonhighschoolGPA,standardizedtestscores,andessays.Studentsareeligibletoapplyiftheyhaveanyoneofthefollowing:ahighschoolGPAofatleasta3.5,anSATscoreof1200orhigher,anACTcompositescoreof27orhigher.Highlymotivatedapplicantswhomightnotmeetthesecriteriaareencouragedtoapplyandarereviewedbasedonthequalityoftheiressays.Thistypicallyaccountsforonlyacoupleofstudentsperclass.CSU,ChicowasrecentlyrecognizedasaHispanicServingInstitutionandhasseenasignificantincreaseinthenumberofapplicationsfromof1stGenerationstudents.TheincreaseinstudentdiversityintheHonorsinGEProgramreflectsthetrendatCSU,Chicoingeneral.ThedatabelowreportsthenumberofURN,Hispanicand1stGenerationstudentinrecentyears.
1.6CurriculumTheHonorsProgramrequiresthatstudentscomplete24unitsofHonorscredit(halfoftheirGeneralEducationunitrequirement)taking12unitsofbothlowerandupperdivisionHonorscourses.ThisincludestheyearlongcapstoneHNRS399,HonorsThesis/Projectof6units.SyllabiforHonorscoursesarepostedontheHonorswebsite.LowerDivisionCoursesHNRS200,HonorsSurveyofCivilizationHNRS201,BEAUTYHNRS202,NATUREHNRS203,TRUTHHNRS204,JUSTICEUpperDivisionsSeminarsHNRS310,AgentsofChangeHNRS320,Science&HumanValuesHNRS330,MindintheMachineHNRS340,Men,Women,andtheLandHonorsThesis/ProjectHNRS399,HonorsThesis/ProjectpresentationtakesplaceinColusaastheendoftheyearcelebrationofstudentscholarshipandachievements.

CourseAssessment:Honorscoursesarenotallassessedinthesameway,buttypesofassessmentinstrumentsincludeattitudinalsurveys,reflectivewritings,andcompetencybasedonpre-andpost-tests.TheHonorsSurveyofCivilization(HSC)hasbeenparticularlyconsistentwiththeassessmentofthis9-unitcourselink.TheassessmentofHSCfromlastfallshowsasignificantimprovementingeneralknowledgeaboutWesternCivilizationfromthepre-andpost-tests.Samplesofthereflectivewritingsfromtheendofthesemesterdemonstrateavarietyofimpactsandtransformationsassociatedwiththecourse.Hereisanexcerptfromastudent'sreflectivewritingfortheHonorsSurveyofCivilizationattheendofFall2018:Goldstein: “I feel much more intellectually confident after taking this course. I have always felt that I am reasonably smart, but have had a difficult time articulating my ideas. A lack of basic background information really held me back from reaching my potential, but now that I have learned about the history of civilization, I feel more capable. I am now able to fully formulate educated opinions on cultural subjects and expand further on underdeveloped ideas.” HereareadditionalstudentreflectionsfromHNRS204,TRUTH,HNRS202,NATURE,andHNRS320,Science&HumanValues.1.7Dataforapplications,admission,retention,graduationGPA,and4,5,&6-yeargraduationrates.ThenumberofstudentsapplyingtotheHonorsPrograminGeneralEducation(HGE)hasdropped,especiallyafter2011.Thisdeclineinthenumberofapplicationsisinspiteofincreasedrecruitingefforts,includingextramailingsandphonecallstoHonorseligiblestudentstoencouragethemtoapply.ItisnotclearallthereasonsforthisrecentdeclineininterestinHonors,butquiteanumberofstudentscommentthattheyareburned-outaftertheirhighschoolhonorsorAPexperiences.ManyofthemseeparticipationinHonorsasjustmorebusywork.IthasbeenachallengeconvincingthemthatourHonorsProgramisnotintendedtobemorework(althoughtheydohavetotakeanadditional3unitsintheirupperdivisionGE),butamorecoherent,multidisciplinary,andteam-taughtapproachtotheirGeneralEducation.AdmissiontotheHonorsProgramseemstobeaneffectiverecruitingtool,orfactorfordecidingtocometoCSU,Chico.Approximately85%ofstudentswhoapplyandareacceptedintheHonorsProgram,ultimatelydecidetoenrollatCSU,Chico.
Therehasbeenasignificantdeclineofapplicationsinthe2010scomparedwiththepreviousdecade.However,thenumberseemstobelevelingoffduringthepastfewyears.
BeingadmittedtotheHonorsinGeneralEducationProgramappearstobeanimportantfactorforstudentstochoosetocometoCSU,Chico.InadditiontotheacademicsofferedbytheHonorsProgram,prospectivestudentsandespeciallytheirparentsareenthusiasticaboutHonorsHousing.

TheattritionfromHonorsinGEisquitehigh.Thereareavarietyoffactorsinvolved.Morethanathirdofstudentsareunabletomaintainthe3.30GPAtoearnthedistinctionofHonorsinGeneralEducation.Despiteourleniencyandencouragementduringacademicprobationforstudentswhoslipbelowa3.30GPA,thisremainsamajorsourceofattrition.Unfortunately,thereareasignificantnumberofstudentsjoinHonorsinGEtomerelygaintheperquisiteofpriorityregistration.Whenwerealizedhowpervasivethisproblemwas,therewasdiscussionabouteliminatingourpriorityregistration.Ultimately,wechosenottobecauseitisavaluablewaytoattractthekindsofstudentwhobringvaluetoourprogram.Nonetheless,thisputsusinthepositionofcontinuallytryingtodetectthecheatersanddroppingthemfromtheprogram.Manyofthepre-nursingstudentsarethebiggestoffendersoftakingadvantageofHonorspriorityregistration.In2015therewere24pre-nursingstudentswhowereadmittedtoHGE.ManyofthemnevertookasingleHonorsclassandnoneofthemcontinuedwithHonorsintotheupperdivision.OtherstudentswilltakeHonorscoursesduringtheirfirsttwoyearsandthendropoutoftheprogramwhentheHonorspriorityregistrationdoesnothelpthemasmuchduringregistration.Thisgamingapproachisbeneficialincertainmajorswheremanyoftheimpactedclassesareatthelowerdivision.TheothersourceofattritionisduetostudentswhostoptakingHonorscoursesanddon'trespondtorequestformandatoryHonorsadvising.Alow,butnotinsignificant,numberofstudentstransfertootherinstitutionsorleaveschoolaltogether.UpongraduationoftheGPAsofstudentswhoparticipateinHonorsinGeneralEducationversusNon-Honorsstudentsissignificantlyhigherfortheclassesof2010-2014.Moreimpressively,thegraduationrateforstudentswhoparticipateinHonorsinGEismarkedlyhigherthanthenon-

4.InfrastructureandtheFuture4.1.FiscalResourcesTheHonorsProgrambudget(2018-2019)isadministeredthroughUndergraduateEducation,currentlyheadedbyInterimDean,KateMcCarthy.Themajorityofourbudgetisforthesalariesofteachingfacultyandstaff.Therehavebeenreductionstoourbudgetinthelastfewyears,butwehavemanagedtomaintaintheessentialfeaturesthatwebelievetoberesponsibleforthequalityoftheprogram.4.2StaffTheHonorsProgramhasafulltimeAdministrativeSupportCoordinator,DawnCarlson,andcurrentlyemploys2HonorsStudentAssistants,MadelineOltwertandJacquelineMatinusen.Dawnisresponsibleforthenumerouschangingactivitiesthatoccurcyclicallyduringtheacademicyear.ShemanagestheHonorsStudentAssistantsandisresponsibleformanagingthebudgetfortheHonorsProgram.Moreover,DawnplanstheHonorsFallWelcome,theFinalsFuelUp,theHonorsThesis/ProjectPresentationEvent,andorganizestheHonorsProgramintheFallWelcomeandChooseChico.ShealsomanagestheHonorsProgramofficeandoverseestheStudentCenter.4.3TechnologyandInformationResourcesTheHonorsProgrammaintainsastand-alonedatabasefortrackingHonorsstudentsthroughouttheircareersatCSU,Chico.ThedatabaseisrunonFileMakerProandisintegraltoHonorsadvising.Detailedadvisingnotesarekeptaswellascontactinformationandarecordofacademicprogress.ThemajorityofthedataentryisaccomplishedbytheHonorsStudentAssistants.4.4SpaceandFacilitiesTheHonorsProgramOfficessinceJanuary2018arelocatedintheUHUB.Theofficesuiteconsistsofareceptionareawithastorageclosetandtwooffices.SincetheofficesshareacommonwallwiththeUHUBSocialCenternoisefromtheSocialCenterisapersistentproblem.ThereisaclassroomonthesecondflooroftheUHUBforwhichHonorshasschedulingpriorityforclasses.Thisisperhapsthemostup-to-dateclassroomoncampuswithrespectstoelectronics.Ithasamaximumcapacityof52students,sosomeofthelargerlowerdivisionseminarscannotmeettherefortheirlargegroupmeetings.The(unofficial)HonorsStudentCenterislocatedinSUTR178Pandissharedwithallofthestudentswhoareintheresidencehalls.TheStudentCentercontains5computerworkstationswithalaserprinter,scanner,anddigitalcamera.
4.5TheFutureGoals:Increasetheopportunitiesforthehighimpactpracticeofstudentresearchbeginningwithlowerdivisioncourses.Thisshouldhelpstudentspreparefortheculminatingyear-longHonorsThesis/Project.ConsiderthepossibilityofincorporatingtheHonorscurriculumintotheGeneralEducationPathwaysasamechanismforearningaMinorsinsomeorallPathway.Explorenewwaystoinitiateandsustainfund-raisingfortheHonorsProgram.Theattemptstofund-raisethroughtheUniversityDevelopmentOfficehavebeenrepeatedlyineffectual.SpaceandFacilities:TheHonorsProgramisinUniversityHousingandFoodServicesspaceuntiltheendof2020(therewasathree-yeartermofferedwhentheHonorsProgrammovedtoUHFSspaceafterbeingremovedfromourpreferredspaceintheMeriamLibrary(MLIB117).Theadvantagesoftheformerspaceincludeacentrallocationoncampus,theStudentCenterandofficesinthesamelocation,and4officesratherthan2.ThecurrentHonorsProgramspaceissub-optimalinanumberofways.First,theofficesareseparatedfromtheHonorsStudentCenterwhichhasfundamentallychangedthewayourstudentscaninteractwithpersonnelintheHonorsProgram.AsDirector,Ihavealwaysmaintainedanopen-doorpolicyandIwelcomestudentstodrop-inforinformalconversations.ThisrarelytakesplaceinthenewHonorsProgramspace,itisnolongercentrallylocatedandthefactthatitisinUniversityHousingspacemakesitseemlikeitisforthefirst-yearstudents.AnotherdrawbackfrommyperspectiveishavingmyofficedirectlyadjacenttotheSocialCenterintheUHUB.ThereisfrequentlyacacophonyofsoundsincethelargescreenTV,thevideogamesandevenmusicareallhappeningatonce-andathighdecibels.TheinabilitytoworkefficientlyinmyofficewasamajorcontributingfactorindecidingtoleavetheHonorsProgram.IcanonlyhopethattherecouldbeanewhomeinthenearfuturefortheHonorsProgram.HonorsBragSheetAstudent'spromotionoftheHonorsThesis/Project
