The University of Notre Dame is the nation’s leadingexample that academic and athletic excellence can gohand in hand, and the Irish men’s swimming and divingteam does its part in upholding that tradition.

Notre Dame is ranked in the Top 20 of the U.S. News &World Report survey of America’s best national universi-ties and was 6th in the 2005-06 NACDA Directors’ Cupstandings of the top all-around collegiate athletic pro-grams in the nation. A 2003 report by the NationalCollegiate Scouting Association listed Notre Dame sec-ond (behind Stanford) in Division I-A rankings for topacademic and athletic schools, based on graduation per-centages, U.S. News & World Report academic rankings, and NACDA Directors’ Cup results.

In 2003, Notre Dame was the recipient of the USAToday/NCAA Academic Achievement Award for havingthe highest overall student-athlete graduation rateamong Division I schools, 92 percent. The Universityboasts an amazing 99 percent graduation rate for stu-dent-athletes who exhaust their eligibility at Notre Dameand the overall student body graduates at a 95 percentclip – the second-highest mark in the country, behindonly Harvard.

Among all of their academic accomplishments, theIrish rank second all-time in the number of student-ath-letes honored as Academic All-Americans, with 176.

The men’s swimming and diving team has tradition-ally been a strong link in the Irish chain of academicexcellence, as it is regularly honored with the CollegiateSwimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA)Academic All-Star awards for their high team grade-pointaverages. In the spring semester of 1999, Notre Dameheld the distinction of boasting the highest team grade-point average among all Division I men’s swimming anddiving programs, a 3.352 mark. That was part of a stringof seven consecutive semesters in which Notre Damewas in the top 10 on that list. More recently, the Irishranked 15th for the 2005-06 academic year with a 3.18GPA.

The Irish also have five times had swimmers tabbedhonorable mention Academic All-America by the CSCAA,a distinction awarded to all swimmers who post a 3.50+GPA for the year and also register at least one NCAA “B”time (without earning a bid to the NCAAChampionships). Ray Fitzpatrick was a winner in both1999 and 2000, while three Irish swimmers -- senior MattObringer and freshmen Ted Brown and Tim Kegelman --were honorees in 2004. Brown, Tim Randolph and FrankKrakowski earned the same distinction in 2005.

A unique opportunity to participate in a special hon-ors program is available for student-athletes who excelboth athletically and academically. The Notre DameAcademic Honors Program, which assists high academicachievers in a variety of areas so student-athletes canachieve their highest potential while attending theUniversity, relies heavily on the recommendations ofhead coaches. The program matches student-athleteswith mentors in their desired field of study and creates anetwork base which the students can use as theyapproach graduation. Former Irish football player GrantIrons had Tom Mendoza, for whom the Notre DameMendoza College of Business was named, as a mentor.Mendoza, in turn, introduced Irons to investment wizardWarren Buffet, who also has taken Irons under his wing.

Twelve members of the Irish men’s swimming and div-ing program have taken part in the honors program, including four on the current roster: seniors Ted Brownand Tim Kegelman along with junior Sam Stoner andsophomore Daniel Lutkus.

Irish men’s swimmers and divers also have beentabbed BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Stars on 192occasions since joining the league in 1995-96. To qualifyfor that honor, one must earn a monogram and post a3.00 GPA for the academic year.

Rolfs Aquatic Center is home to Notre Dame’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. The pool has twomoveable bulkheads that allow the Irish the opportunity to train on either a long or short course.

The Irish swimming and diving teamscompete in the state-of-the-art RolfsAquatic Center. After 27 years of inter-collegiate swimming competition in theRockne Memorial Pool, the Notre Dameswimming and diving programsentered a new era in 1985, as theymoved to the $4.5-million natatoriumlocated in the Joyce Center.

Donated by brothers Thomas andRobert Rolf of West Bend, Wis., theRolfs Aquatic Center provides NotreDame with a modern, innovative facil-ity on par with any other in the coun-try. Ellerbe Architects and Engineers ofBloomington, Minn., the architectsused in the planning of the JoyceCenter, also were commissioned todesign the 45,000-square-foot facilitywhich houses a 50-meter Olympic pool(25 yards in width), spectator seatingfor 400 and support facilities.

The facility features two movablebulkheads to allow sections of the poolto be blocked off, allowing swimmingcompetition and warm-up swimming tooccur simultaneously. The design alsoallows recreational swimming, water polo, instructional swimming and other aquaticactivities. Diving is accommodated with twoone-meter boards and two three-meterboards.

Support functions housed in the center ofthe facility just below the spectator seatinginclude men’s and women’s locker rooms, men’s and women’s varsity locker rooms, and men’s and women’s staff locker rooms.Offices for the Notre Dame swimming staff, aquatics directors, and lifeguards are deck-

of three trusses which span 120 feet, withthe roof suspended below the trusses. Inaddition, the white exterior trusses providean interesting and athletic character to thebuilding. The lighting system is designed tobe adjusted from maximum brightness fortelevision to nearly dark for dramatic syn-chronized swimming presentations.

The center was officially dedicated onNovember 13, 1985.
