• These all carry “weighted” grades.• All are fantastic for students who:• Want to develop academic and study skills that will
benefit them now and in future high school and college courses• Can accept and constructively use criticism to improve• Can meet the time, effort, and challenge demanded
of these courses• Meet the prerequisites of the course• Have the proper work ethic necessary of honor level
courses
Honors Course Considerations…..
• Honors classes are a top factor in admission to more selective colleges.
• These courses are NOT necessary toward earning an Academic Honors Diploma.
• When considering enrollment in honors courses, it is important to think about time management skills, extracurricular commitments, and areas of curricular interest.
• Enrollment in one honors course may be a sufficient challenge for a student beginning his or her freshman year of high school. It is not necessary to enroll in all honors courses that are available.
• Do middle school teachers recommend?• Don’t do it just because their friends are! It is ok to wait.• Don’t do it for the GPA! It’s about the learning and preparation for
AP courses and post secondary ed!
Random Thoughts……..• -“They will learn different ways to solve problems on their
own and work collaboratively.”• -“It’s ok to ask for help!”• -“Students have to take responsibility for their learning—both
in assessing their progress and seeking help when needed.”• -“Reading and being able to summarize complex passages is
important.”• -“Grades are taken to assess skills/learning and there are far
fewer completion grades.”• -“Diligence and Resilience is crucial. Doing things in the same
manner may not get the same result. Students learn to think deeper and differently.”
