Chairman’s Summary – Jonathon Stephen

The 2013-14 season saw some excellent playing achievements and developments across the Youth and Minis Section of CVRFC.

Our volunteer capacity is developing and growing in strength and the numbers of children playing and reaping the rewards from Rugby within the club has grown. This is most probably fuelled by increasing levels of achievement within the age groups and by us having an increasing presence in the community.

On behalf of the Exec Committee, thank you to all volunteers and supporters of the club for your hard work and dedication mobilised for the children of our community over the past year.

In the last year, The Club has consolidated the movement to Croxley Guild of Sport and this is creating a stronger single sense of identity across the sections of the club with members coming together to support the effective organisation of the club.

Significant efforts were made to bring the facilities up to standard over the summer with working parties coming together to embed the post sleeves, decorate the changing rooms, remove the old base of the practice cricket square and bring the facilities up to working standard. Significant financial investment was made to fund the above and also to fund the erection of the Netting system to protect the tennis courts. The materials utilised have functioned well to-date. Additional investment has been made in funding materials for pitch improvements and for a soft refurbishment of the toilets.

The Guild has supported the playing and promotion of Rugby at CGoS hosting the Chess Cup and also the Herts Schools Partnership Tag festival. Saracens were also able to run a two day skills training camp generating interest and income.

Club Constitutional change was implemented in last Year’s Club AGM with the support of the club leading to Youth and Minis parents achieving membership and also bringing a balance to the Club Exec committee.

Looking forwards the roots of the club are strong with our younger age groups gathering volume and suggestive perhaps that our club is now the favoured local option. Looking forwards we need to ensure that we continue to promote the Club and its ethos within schools so that we can continue to successfully bring more children and families into the sport and club.


Chess Valley RFC

This year saw the first U18s team complete the season and players are now graduating to play for the seniors team. This is a historical first for the club and hopefully we will see more graduation in this style looking forwards.

The fixtures were arranged by Mark and Brian and planned, communicated and co-ordinated extremely well across both youth and minis – although there was considerable vol. of cancellation due to the awful weather in Jan and Feb.

Safeguarding has improved significantly due to the work of Stuart and the commitment of the coaches and managers in completing checks and delivering training. Policies for the club have also been drafted by Stuart and will be ratified within the Exec looking forwards.

The Kit-Shop was a real success, with Fiona committing significant time and energy in providing kit purchasing opportunities and generating high volume turnover of shirts and some new items enjoyed by many. Looking forwards the product range to be made available will be reviewed and taken forwards.

Our relationship with CGoS remains strong with good and improving representation evident within the CGoS committee. Our first year at CGoS has seen footfall increase significantly and our partnership with CGoS will be reviewed to ensure that the arrangements remain mutually agreeable.

Socially, the calendar has been filled with some great events including the open day, the awards evening, quizes, a Christmas party and we have the Club Summer Ball to look forwards to. Teresa was also instrumental in raising further funds through the RFU raffle. Thank you to all individuals who have assisted with the planning and delivery of these events.

Additional acknowledgement and thanks are extended to Martin Critcher who has taken some excellent photos for the club over the season and also at the Awards night.

Secretary’s Summary – Richard Booth

In my first year we completed our move to CGoS. I got to see first hand how hard the volunteers on our committee and our coaches work for the club. The meetings went very smoothly considering how much had to be done. I am

looking forward to another year and seeing CVRFC go from strength to strength.

CVRFC is a rapidly growing club. There will always be a turnover of boys but more are replacing them. I am working on an accurate figure for the number of members from last year on to this one and will be putting something out to the committee when it is ready. We are working to have a definitive members list with all RFU numbers and member details. An indication apart from a few players who have still not paid as of this report being written are 248 paid up members.

As Club Ambassador to the RWC 2015 the last year has been fairly quiet with a meeting at Twickenham and also one in Herts RFU to discuss the plans going forward. During this next season with the RWC approaching I can imagine that I will be very busy and there will be good opportunities for us to bring in some money for the club and also to attract new blood of all ages.

Head Coach – Brian Reilly

We now have approximately 50 coaches across the club, and we have had a number of development sessions over the season where most of them have attended and been able to swap ideas.

This cross-pollination across the age groups is the way forward, and if any of the age groups think they would benefit from an input from coaches from different age groups then I can try and organise it.

We need more of those coaches to be getting on to their level 1 and 2 courses, and budding referees would be also welcome!

I guess finally a big thank you to the coaches who give a lot of time and energy to the development of our chess valley players, we would be lost without your enthusiasm and commitment.

U7 – Stuart Lemon

What a fantastic season we had with the U7's this year we had close to 30 kids regularly playing despite having to contend with many of the local football clubs training on a Saturday and then playing games on a Sunday. A massive thank you to all the parents who

supported through wind, rain, and sun they were always there to support the boys.

I was fortunate enough to have 6 coaches allowing us to spend more time with a smaller group of boys and allowing me to plan the next activities and look at where we should spend time with training. There were some great highlights in 2013 - 2014 season, winning the U7 trophy at the Barnet Festival, qualifying for the Champions cup in the Alan Day VW Development Cup, even getting beaten by Rosslyn Park in the pouring rain at Allianz Park the boys were still amazing and trying their hearts out. Finally the Herts county with 6 full teams and seeing Connor, Anthony and Austin picking up their trophies at our awards ceremony.

I will be sad to see some of the boys stay down as we had a fantastic group last year but I am very happy to see Stu Miles take over he is a fantastic coach and brilliant with the boys and I expect big things from the U7's next year.

U8 – Rich Lake

After three years with the Under 7s, I finally got to move up this year to new rules (which turned out to be a lot like the old Under 7 rules) and players most of whom had at least a season of tag rugby behind them. Having refereed Tring and OAs playing a very fluent expansive game at the previous year’s county festival, the coaches

decided that was how we wanted to play at the start of the season, and that set our style of play for the whole year.

We started the season with about 25 boys, a number which remained reasonable constant throughout the year, rising to 28 boys going to the end of season festival. A few boys dropped out during the season as they didn’t enjoy tag, but they promised to return and were replaced by new members. On the coaching front, we had five (myself, Iain Scarlett, Mike Atkins, Mike Williams and Paul Curtis) for most of the season, with Rob Shine helping when not involved with the U18s. For next year, we have interest from two other parents (as well as Rob full time) as we make the transition away from tag to contact.

On the playing front we have had a very successful year in that the boys adapted to the fluent support play brilliantly. We just missed out on retaining the Barnet trophy by one try, but played some glorious rugby on the day. We rarely streamed the teams, giving everyone a chance to play with everyone else. However, when we did play with A, B and C teams, these were again successful. Both our “A” team and “Development” team qualified through their groups in the Allianz Cup to the finals day, which gave 20 of our squad the chance to play at Allianz Park over the four tournaments.Other highlights of the season include some fantastic matches at OAs, where our teams seemed inspired by the quality of both the opposition and the pitches. We also had fantastic away days at Harrow and Pinner, while I don’t think anyone will forget the monsoon conditions in which we faced Datchworth at home. The weather made training difficult at times. However, the Swillet was a useful substitute on three occasions and Thursday night training made also helped to reinforce what we were doing on Sundays. It was also great to be able train on Thursdays next to the U16s and see what we’re aiming to be in 8 years time!

The finale of the season was the County Tag festival. We took four teams, streamed with one A team, two B teams and a C team. Although there is no overall winner to this tournament, we were again very successful in the matches we played both in our style of play and the results. Our A team won four and drew the other of their matches, while the other teams also won more than they lost and, more importantly, had a tremendously enjoyable day showing off their tag skills in their final tag tournament.

Finally, my thanks goes out to my fellow coaches and the parents who have now realised that standing on the sidelines doing nothing is not an option. In particular, the glue that sticks us together is our team manager Angela Leitch, without whom… actually I don’t want to think what would happen if she wasn’t keeping us organised.On to the Under 9s and contact!

U9 Andy Smith

A hugely enjoyable season that saw the players transition from tag rugby to contact.

It will definitely be considered a huge success as player numbers have increased from 15 at the end of 2012/13 to 32 at the end of this season.

The coaches have tried to follow the ethos of improving individual and team performances whilst letting results on the pitch take care of themselves and of giving all the players equal game time regardless of ability.

Consequently we have definitely seen an improvement in each player with the wet / muddy training sessions of Jan and Feb proving a turning point where the players came of age in their tackling.

We then saw some great individual and team performances towards the end of the season - particularly at the Watford / Welwyn Tri and the County festival where the C team were semi-finalists and the B team won this age groups first silverware being runners-up in their competition.

Bring on September and the rucking and mauling!

U10 Chris Laycock

Another highly successful and satisfying season for the U10s.

The early part of the season was filled with getting to grips with Rucks and Mauls for the first time - which has come a long way but still needs work.

The weather in Mid Season helped no-one but when we re-gathered after the rains another successful festival season followed - not necessarily in terms of outright results but definitely in effort and attitude.

All in all a season to be proud of and when we played at our best we were a match for anyone in the county.

U11 Doug Wotherspoon

The U11s have faired well this season with some really fine rugby played and most importantly good fun had all round. Initially we

struggled for numbers with some of last years key players deciding to let their parents move away from the area, let their brothers play for other clubs or take up more fruitful activity on a Sunday morning. Good wishes to them all.

Our numbers have now grown with strong additions to the team and touchline with one parent even making an appearance for the 1st Team after a number of years of early middle age rest !!!. We will have to continue to grow next season as well to be successful when we reach league matches the year after next.

We have trained with the U12s for most of the season, which has been great: Thanks to Rob, Trevor and Clem for making us very welcome.

We played some really good periods of rugby in the county festival unfortunately these were not all in an order that meant we were able to progress out of the pool stages. Still the sun shone brightly and good fun was had.

Thanks to Amanda, Andrew, Mark and Nick for managing and coaching and the rest of the parents for their help and support throughout the season.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the members of this fine club who helped and supported me through a difficult time following an incident at the beginning of the season. We are all very lucky to be part of something great here.

U12 Trevor Baxter This year was very much a stop start season. We started the year training well and the first major test for the team was the Barnet Festival on the 6th October. We were playing good flowing rugby, but did not progress out of the pools losing 2 - 1 to the eventual winners of the tournament in our final pool game. During October we played some interesting fixtures:

- beating Watford 55-5 away with some well worked tries and strong physical confrontations.- losing to a very tough Cheshunt team. We were well matched in the scrum, tackling and passing but Cheshunt's organisation at the ruck and maul plus their aggression and commitment to winning the ball overwhelmed the team at times. However, we have some good runs and some very solid periods of play.

November was continual training which showed when we played Old Albanians away on 1st December. We took 14 boys (one team plus one substitute) and played an hour of very competitive rugby against three different OA teams - losing one match by a single try and winning two matches by two and four tries respectively, the last game against nearly a full squad of A-team players. The team were outstanding and the defence - the tackling, the commitment, the rucks, the mauls and the scrum were awesome. The boys really surprised one of the best teams in the County with their efforts and were excellent to a man. We were very confident for our last fixture of 2013 against Ruislip. We started aggressively, but could not maintain our momentum, eventually loosing. However, the Sausage Team performed exceptionally, and everyone was well fed after the game!

And then it all went quiet for what seemed like an eternity. Not a playable pitch in North London for 8 weeks. Fixtures cancelled, training cancelled, coaches scouring North London for grass areas not underwater. We started training again in February and were slowly building the season's finale - the County Festival held at Fuller's on 30th March. But then we suffered the impact of inter-school matches that had started and we lost 3 players with shoulder and elbow injuries reducing our playing squad to a bare minimum. (Also, one of the boys went on a cricket tour overseas instead of attending the festival - imagine prioritising cricket over rugby!) As usual, we requested to play in the shield competition, but were ignored and placed in the cup. We had just enough players for the festival thanks to the heroic efforts of the parents to find a couple of additional players. The boys played exceptionally well, including the 3 boys "borrowed" from Fullers to make up for our injuries during the festival. An excellent effort by those boys playing, but unfortunately we were unable to register a victory, but not through lack of effort. All in all a very challenging year, but with some great points - the highlight being our performance at Old Albanians. We played some excellent rugby, the team is now settling into a strong shape and we are very much looking forward to next season with anticipation.

U13 Gerry Boyle

The U13s played in the Herts & Middlesex U13 League Division 4 this season. It was the players' first season in a competitive league and was a significant step up for both players and coaches. We were

matched against high quality opposition from Old Albanians, Grasshoppers, Hammersmith & Fulham and Dunstable.

We only lost 3 league games all season, against the top 3 teams. But for a draw against Dunstable on a cold and wet morning at the very beginning of the season we would have finished 4th.

The boys played extremely well all year and pressed Old Albanians and Hammersmith all the way. Despite our defeat to OA's it was probably our best team performance, with much improved rucking, line speed and tackling. We enjoyed a number of friendly fixtures with victories over Harrow, Harpenden and Bracknell. The end of season tour saw us take the notable scalp of Barnstable, one of the oldest clubs in the RFU!

The squad size has increased and we welcomed a number of newcomers who have added to our strengths both in the forwards and in the backs. Next season, we hope to be a force to be reckoned with.

U14 Mark Leveridge

This season the U14s have again played in division 4 (of 7) in the Herts Middlesex Leagues. After some great performances they finished 4th and will remain in this division next season. Overall the squad played 16 games, winning 8 of them. Leading scorers were Tristan Peregrine, Dan Stephen and Simon Ryder with 8 tries each. Billy Argent and Matthew Leveridge both played in all 16 fixtures (with Matthew starting all 16 fixtures at tighthead).Amongst the highlights of the season were victories against Amersham & Chiltern 53-0 and Fullerians 24-5, a one point league victory against Barnet with a Valley try in the last minute and a tour victory, 38-5, at Barnstable.

U16s Alan Clewley

We started pre-season with the hope of remaining in League 1 and to narrow the chasm between us and Old Albanians, who had demolished us in the Herts County Cup Final the previous season.

To assist the lads in improving their skill sets and to develop their understanding of the game at a higher level, Chris Palmer former Chess Valley Seniors Head Coach and current Head Coach of

Hendon as well as being a Divisional Assessor and Middlesex County Coach joined the Coaching Team as Lead Coach.

This season has been an overwhelming success, despite being the first one in Youth Rugby without gaining any silverware. The lads have far exceeded our expectations by finishing 3rd in League one only losing to Old Albanians, winners of the League, and Saracens a Team packed with County and Academy players.

League record played 6, won 4 lost 2. In each of our victories we achieved maximum points ending with 20 points.

In the County Cup Quarter Final we came from behind to comfortably beat a resurgent Hertford side. In the Semi Final we lost to our nemesis Old Albanians however our performance was a vast improvement on the Cup Final mentioned above.

Next season we aim to consolidate our League 1 status and hopefully challenge Old Albanians and Saracens.

We have been informed that a number of new players may well be joining us next season and so competition for places will be at an all-time high. We will be holding an Open Day on the last Sunday in June with the aim of integrating the squad before pre-season and to have some fun post GCSEs.

All in all a very positive start to League 1, well done to all the players, coaches, admin staff and supporters for your efforts this season.

U16s 2s Adam Turner Another good year for the U16 Second team, improvement seen in all players skill levels, confidence and understanding of the game. Several players have performed well for the first team in various matches and competitions and the majority have taken part in development games where they played alongside their more experienced first team counterparts against a suitable mid division opposition. We have had an influx of new players and currently look to be in good shape to have a strong second squad again next season.

Playing and Practicing Facilities

Facilities next year to accommodate our needs will be located at CGoS and Rickmansworth school.

Rickmansworth School are now welcoming us back providing improved facilities for the Minis and their families and additional opportunities for us to have access to pitch space with changing rooms as Youth volumes increase in the years pending. This will add to our expenditure per year facilities but has been unanimously supported by the Y and M’s Committee.

Key issues needing resolution for the next season are:-

Safeguarding report – Stuart Adcock-Kersting

As of 27 April 2014 CVRFC have total of 62 coaching and management staffof whom 41 (66%) have a valid DBS check. This is in comparison to 10 out of 57 (17.5%) holding such checks at the end of last season.

In March the club has ran it’s own ‘Play it Safe’ (level 1 safeguarding) course at Rickmansworth School and now has 11 staff trained from the youth section spread across the majority of age groups.

Safeguarding and cyber guidance and social media policies have been written for the club and await adoption pending approval by the executive committee.

There have been two safeguarding incidents reported to the club during the past season both of which have been resolved to the satisfaction of the RFU.

Sponsorship and Marketing

Our current sponsors Kenwood, Lime Green Design and TPW have supported the club tremendously well and thank you to them all for their support.

Historically, Sponsorship income has been used to purchase essential equipment and kit such as match shirts, post padding and is an essential funding stream that supports us to manage our running costs.

The future sharing of Sponsorship income will be managed within the Club Executive Committee where the Youth and Minis Sections have good representation.

Further opportunities exist to gather smaller incomes from sponsorship and this is a potential area of additional income for the Club.

We are seeking a sponsorship secretary to occupy the committee position within Y and Ms looking forwards and hope that this person can also pick up on promoting the club positively across media and community platforms.

Kit Shop – Fiona Stannard

The turnover from the shop was very good this year and some capital funds will need to be set aside to ensure that kit stock levels can be maintained and refreshed ahead of next season.

An outer Training Kit is probably going to be procured and available for purchase looking forwards as this is seen as a key gap in what we have to offer currently.

Additionally opinions will be sought as to any other products that people indicate may be worthwhile making available.

Fixtures Report – Brian Parry We had four training sessions before our open day at the end of September. We then had the usual curtain raiser that is the Barnet Festival the first weekend of October. We had 4 home games and 3 away games before Christmas. This included a big day for the Minis when we played our first fixture at the Guild against Cheshunt on 20 October 2013.

So, pre-Christmas a lot of training and quite a bit of rugby was played. The weather in January and early February was not kind to us, and our fixtures and training sessions were severely disrupted. We had 5 home matches in the fixture list but lost two due to waterlogged pitches (one at SJoA and one at The Guild). We had 3 away fixtures and lost one to a waterlogged pitch. We 6 training sessions but lost one due to the pitches being frozen. Had it not been for the hard work of the coaches and their creative sourcing of semi-dry bits of grass in Hertfordshire, we would have lost another 2 training sessions after Christmas. A lot less rugby was played in the second half of the season due to the atrocious weather conditions. Despite the best efforts and the willingness of the opposition teams and ourselves to switch venues the alternative venues were similarly swamped with water! Allan Day Trophy – U7, U8, U9 and U10 all participated in this competition Land Rover Trophy – U11 and U12 participated in this competition. All Mini age groups played in the Herts County Festivals. The football pitch (pitch 3) became available after Christmas and it was used by U11 and U12 whenever possible for training

Webb-Master – Iain Scarlett

Key Achievements:

Successful transition of Web Master from Alex W to myself. The site has generated £12.72 of revenue from 5% commission on

sales in Pitchero Marketplace. Not sure how to get the funds though.

Site visits and hits have improved over the past year, and while generally averaging a ranking of around 500 for Rugby across Pitchero, in recent weeks we have risen to around 250, presumably off a recent increase in News Items.

Site Membership now around 400+ Better use of the team/site colours (from Black/Green to Green/Pink)

now means highlights and hyperlinks stand out rather than previously being in Black and merging into the default Black text, and Black/White backgrounds.

Areas for Improvement:

We could be posting more match reports and news items across the Age Groups. The same (few) sections appear to be using the site to post-match reports, but it doesn't reflect the general buzz round the club. It would be nice to see more of the teams having more regular updates and match reports.

Including All Players (including those below the age of Social Media access) on the Players Lists - to date we don't include the Minis on the sites because as individuals they're not old enough to become site members themselves. However Pitchero has updated it's Membership model and "Parents" now have to be attached to "Player", which is causing some issues with some Minis Parent's applications. I have seen some other clubs who include their Mini's members on the site, presumably linked to the parents. This is something we may need to consider adopting.

Photographs - a big thank you to all of you who post photos to the site. However a plea from those of us who have to Moderate each one of them - quality not quantity please - less is more. In this digital photography age it's easy to forget the days of film where one was restricted to 24 or 36 shots and therefore tended to be more careful over what you took a shot of. I know I invariably shoot off 200-300 shots at a festival but I have to be brutal with myself to edit those down to the best 30 or so that capture the moment - using the criteria "Would I spend money to print this?" If the answer is "No" then it doesn't make the cut. An alternative is Video. Use of edited highlights can be a useful training ad analysis tool.

Objectives for Next Year:

Put the Club Shop on-line or at least the catalogue and prices. Models required.

Develop the Coaches and Players sections, acting as a library of content, particularly for coaches on development, training ideas, drills etc.

Following review within the Y and M’s meeting and after much discussion it was agreed to re-define the main awards and to align them explicitly with RFU’s key values.

People Coming and Going

Chris Laycock

Has confirmed he will be leaving the U10s as head coach and this is a big loss for the club. We are currently seeking a replacement from within the age-group.

Jerome Peregrine

Jerome has confirmed he will not be continuing in the role this year. Thank you for your work over the last year Jerome.

Her children having left the club last season, Deborah continued to assist with the Chess valley social calendar and somewhat inevitably has now finished. Her help over the years has been much valued and her and her family’s presence will continue to be missed.
