GLSEN Respect Awards
“The Respect Awards are GLSEN’s most important fundraising event of the year. Thank you to every honoree and sponsor for helping make life better for LGBT students.”
—GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard, PhD
GLSEN Respect Awards
“I’m so inspired by so many of the young people I’ve met here. The work that they’re doing, and the work GLSEN is doing
in the school is mind-blowingly fantastic...The idea of accepting and respecting one another is a powerful one, especially in our nation’s schools.”
— Zachary Quinto, 2015 GLSEN Respect Awards–Los Angeles honoree
“I was 15 when I realized that if I wanted to be treated equally I had to make that change...I researched Gay-Straight Alliances and how to get one started in my school... we persevered, and I’m no longer silent...I’m 16 now and know my life of activism has only just begun...Thank you so much to GLSEN.”
— Mars Hallman, 2015 GLSEN Respect Awards–Los Angeles Student Advocate of the Year
“GLSEN fights for the change we all seek in the world with a style of activism that elevates us. Through education and engagement, with indefatigable patience, balanced by relentless insistence, GLSEN saves young LGBT lives by providing resources and programs, and creating hope
and promise for a future in which we can all embrace our differences and move forward and pursue our dreams.”
— Ilene Chaiken, 2016 GLSEN Respect Awards–New York honoree
“I think it’s part of our obligation as a society to make sure everybody is treated fairly and our kids are all loved and protected.”
—President Barack Obama May 16, 2016 discussing protections for transgender students
Equality for LGBT students. Respect for all at school.
Since its founding in 1990, GLSEN has transformed
the lives of millions of LGBTQ youth in tens of thousands of K-12 schools nationwide.
GLSEN helped ban “ex-gay” reparative therapy
in schools, lead the national Safe Schools anti-bullying
movement, and won sweeping new federal
civil rights protections for transgender students.
Today, we must protect those victories—including
defending against 23 states’ efforts to roll
back trans students’ rights, via lawsuits against
the federal government. And we must continue to
implement GLSEN’s four school-based supports,
proven to make life better for LGBTQ students
and create a culture of respect for all. They are:
1. Visible, supportive educators2. Fair and affirming policies3. LGBT-inclusive curriculum and resources
4. Student clubs that support LGBTQ issues,
such as GSAs
When those four supports are in place, LGBTQ students
do enormously better:
• Average GPA up from 2.8 to 3.3• Absenteeism down from 61% to 17%• Likelihood of not considering college cut in half• Less depression and risk-taking behavior, higher
self-esteem and graduation rates
Between now and 2020, GLSEN is implementing a $40 million plan to scale up locally—bringing the four supports to many more
schools and communities. In the next four years, we will:
a. Inspire 625,000 more educators to be visibly
LGBTQ supportive (+10%)
b. Protect 500,000 more LGBTQ students with
LGBTQ-inclusive school policies (+20%)
c. Teach 3.5 million more students about LGBTQ history
and health (+7%)
d. Help found 3,000 new student-led GSAs (+10%)
The GLSEN Respect Awards raise money to achieve this vision
by showcasing the work of students, educators, individuals,
and corporations. Each honoree and sponsor is an exemplary
role model, making a significant impact on the lives LGBTQ youth.
GLSEN is a leader in both the global movement for LGBTQ equality and in the whole-child movement for educational equity. GLSEN experts, such as GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard, current middle and high school students who are part of our National Student Council, and GLSEN affiliated educators and parents, are regularly sought after by writers and producers for information and commentary on topics affecting LGBTQ youth.
