Random Thoughts: By BLACKHAWK Director Ben Bentley

I'd like to begin by doing a little bragging on both my town (Huntsville) and State (Alabama). On the 29th of

March, Huntsville had a "Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam Veterans" at the newly completed Hunts-

ville Madison County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville honoring all veterans from all services. We, Ginny

and I, didn't know what to expect, but felt that we wanted to be there and be a part of it. The place was

packed---definitely standing room only. There were local and state dignitaries, a military band, color and

honor guard for a 21-gun salute, a bagpiper, and vets of every size shape and description---guys w/bikes and

leathers, wheel-chairs and crutches, suits and ties, vans from the Tutt Fanning Veterans Home, active duty as

well as retirees, and more than a few folks who seemed to be drawn as sons and daughters, parents, broth-

ers and sisters of our fallen comrades. The one common thread from everybody was a love of country and

honor for those who serve, regardless of when, where or what service. Quite a moving experience. Turns

out that our State has passed a proclamation designating March 29th as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans. I

hear that this has caught hold and is spreading around the country. Hopefully, something similar occurred in

your "neck of the woods". Just thought I'd take a moment to brag that Sweet Home Alabama definitely did it

up right!

I hope that you all are making plans to attend the next reunion in September. I know Bill Beaver and Joy are

hard at work putting the finishing touches on what promises to be another great time with old (and getting

older) friends!!! Additionally, we will be bringing up several important issues regarding our Blackhawk Asso-

ciation for discussion and vote during our annual business meeting---more than just deciding where the 2014

reunion will be held. This is YOUR organization, so please be there and let your voice be heard. Speaking of

next reunions, we are already at work, making arrangements for the 2013 reunion in Colorado Springs.

We'll be presenting an outline of events, dates and plans at the business meeting in Charleston---just another

small reason that you don't want to miss September in West Virginia.

One last thought as Memorial Day approaches: "A Veteran - whether Active Duty, Retired, National Guard,

or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United

States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life". Each and every one of you wrote such a

check---stand proud of what you did. Thank you for your service, Ben

First "PSNCO" for 7th Sqdrn

1st Air Cav "Blackhawks" Yes, old Sergeant First Class Earl F. Shepherd was the first PSNCO (Personnel Staff Non Commissioned Officer), to join the Squadron. After a full 30 year US Army Career, I retired at Ft Knox, Kentucky in August 1978, as a Staff Sergeant Major. My last assignment there at the Personnel

Control Facility, was the Sergeant Major. Back in 1967 I was also at Fort Knox, working at the Chief Ad-ministrative NCO, in the Office of the Secretary, US Army Armor School. That is where I was assigned, when I received orders to report to a new assignment, a unit being activated for deploy-ment to Vietnam. My report date was set somewhere in late November. At the Headquarters of the 7th Squadron only a few key person-nel had arrived. One being the new Command Sergeant Major for the unit. (CSM Thomas Carter - deceased). The time I had received orders was around August of l967. When the unit learned of my position at Ft Knox, and with the late report date, a lot of "wheels started spinning" among several Headquarters Commanders. It became obvious that I was needed at the new unit, as soon as possible. New troops were beginning to arrive, and the Sergeant Major only had one young clerk who needed help. It wasn't long before my report date was moved up to some-where in around the middle of August 1967. It was now late July and I had to begin planning for my departure from the Armor School assignment. My report date arrived, and I checked into the new unit. My position and assignment now was, Headquar-ters Company, 7th Squadron, 1st Air Cavalry. And my new title became, PSNCO. After meeting the Sergeant Major, the Com-mander and some other staff officers, I was introduced to my new boss - the Adjutant - Captain Stanley Fracker. It just took a few days to find myself buried in all Administrative duties that applied to a new unit being activated. The biggest task at hand, at the time, was screening and processing newly assigned personnel arriving for duty. We had four line compa-nies, identified as A, B, C and D plus our Headquarters Compa-ny, to fill with men based on their MOS then (Military Occupation-al Specialty). On a daily basis, I had a number of reports to compile, sever-al higher headquarters to keep informed by phone of our sta-tus. The mission was to reach 85% of strength before the date to deploy. Other demanding administrative duties were to pro-cess all incoming mail and to receive and distribute new regula-tions being sent in. While we continued to perform our duties at our Garrison location, we also had to spend time "out in the field" meeting certain requirements in being prepared for Combat in a War Zone. The pace of our working responsibilities became more demand-ing as each day arrived. All members who had dependents living in Government Quarters were required to take action and move dependents off the reservation. This placed a much larger bur-den on each man who had dependents, myself being one. Wife and four children. Three girls in school and a son at home. That was the time when most wives had to begin "taking charge" of all

family affairs. In our case, we bought a brand new three bed-room home just off the reservation. So the days and weeks, including the Christmas holiday season of 1967 flew right on by. As the month of January arrived, all members were now making final preparations, for departure to Vietnam. Both within the units, and for those with dependents, caring for their families. For deployment to Vietnam, our unit consisted of four different "increments". The first was shipment of all the CONEX contain-ers to the port for loading on board a ship and be sent to our pre-determined location in Vietnam. Next was for all the units Heli-copters to be flown to California, and place aboard a ship at Long Beach for movement to our Vietnam location. Then the Main Body of Troops were to be placed aboard a ship while our Ad-vance Party stayed behind and to be flown over to Vietnam. I was with the Main Body for movement to Vietnam. At Fort Knox somewhere around the early part of January, all members going with the main body, were "bused" to the main air terminal in Louisville Kentucky. Our departure from there took us to Long Beach, California. There we went aboard the Navy Transport Ship named USS UPSHER. Our trip across the Pacific took 25 days, with one stop in Okinawa for six hours. Upon arrival in Vietnam, our ship was carrying several hundred of other troops going to different locations. At one of the Ports in North Vietnam, our Sergeant Major had flown up from down South, and delivered a bag of mail to all on board in our unit, that had mail from home. Then our travels on down the coast of Vi-etnam took us to an area known as Vung Tau, where we off

loaded and awaited a flight to Di An, Vietnam our new location.

Our helicopter pilots and line troop soldiers, were soon engaged in Combat after the unit had been settled in at our new location

of Di An, a short distance from Saigon. Then after about 2 maybe

3 months, our Commander (Colonel Charles Canady) an-nounced he was moving our unit to the Mekong Delta to a town called Vinh Long. That moved took place in a short period of time, when we found ourselves all settled in. Although we were pretty much surrounded by our enemies, the Viet Kong, with our security defenses we were fairly well safe. As the months went by in l968, our unit suffered a number of casualties. And during most of the year, we were under the "Infusion" program. That meant some of our members were be-ing reassigned to other units in Vietnam, based on grade and MOS, while we received similar new members from "In-Country" assignment. This program allowed our unit and others, not to have all members eligible for rotation back stateside, at the same time. The 7th Squadron, 1st Air Cavalry was known as the "Blackhawks". The unit served in Vietnam for another couple of years after I departed. Several new awards were earned by our unit, for its accomplishments while fighting the enemy. In behalf of all those deceased members, from combat and all those since, who served with the 7th Squadron 1st Air Caval-ry, may all of us remaining living members, never forget our time together and be proud of our country. Earl F. Shepherd PSNCO

HEROES

Today we hear and see the word Hero a lot

and those in our military are just that. I’d like to say

something about some heroes I know. It was the last

part of Aug. 1970 while on a mission we split into

pink teams and started checking out different areas.

My pilot that day was WO/George Dodd, the other

ship was piloted by Capt. Al Metzner, and back seat

was Troy Leonbuger with front seat gunner Wade

Britt. While Mr. Dodd and I spotted an area of inter-

est we flew over to check it out at which time we

started receiving fire and were shot down. To rescue

us from our downed aircraft, Capt. Metzner dropped

down and Troy and Wade exited their aircraft to get

to us, at which time Capt. Metzner hovered over to

where we were at and Mr. Dodd and I were loaded

onto his ship where we were put down in a safe ar-

ea. In turn both Troy and Wade were injured in that

rescue, but everyone got out alive. I just want to let

you Troy, Wade and Capt. Metzner know I'll never

forget how you guys went above and beyond the call

of duty that day and I will never forget you! I send

special thanks out to you! You three are truly Heroes! Also a big thank you out to the

Snake pilots and C&C for being there that day as

well!

————————————————————— Mike Givens related a story to me while at the Del-

ta Troop Gathering last March. While he was check-

ing out a nursing home for his mother, he noticed in

one of the rooms a Black Hawk Insignia. He spoke to the woman who indeed was the mother of one of

our own KIA members. A pilot. She would very

much enjoy speaking to anyone who may have

known Her son in country. Perhaps one of you re-

member her son and could share some comforting

words about him to this aging mother.

Our general orders require that the Blackhawk news Editor produce a newsletter 4 times a year. This was

voted on by you the membership in Ohio at the

2004 meeting of this Blackhawk Association.

All the board members and officers of this associa-

tion work for all of us without pay. I do it for self-

gratitude. It makes me feel good to help bring those

we served with together again and to help them

where I can. The others do it for the same reasons

I’m sure. In our last newsletter there was a request from Brian

Ferguson for any help he could get to put together a

shadow box for William Mullin’s son, Sean who was

13 when his father pasted away. Sean never knew his

father. A reply from Sean will be in the upcoming

newsletter thinking you all for the help in creating a

memory of his father for him.

Anyway my point to this is we cannot do it without

YOU!

We need you all to chip in too. There are hundreds

of stories from our time together in Vietnam. Won’t

you sit down for just a few minutes and write a little

something about you, about us or your time while in

Vietnam or anything else on your mind. Help share

our memories and stories with the others while

helping us produce the 4 newsletters you voted on

and you asked for, from this Blackhawk Association.

Then and Now 10 June 2003

By Douglas Gandy CW5

I am a National Guard Soldier currently deployed to

the Persian Gulf. Thirty-five years ago I was a young

Army helicopter pilot stationed in the Delta of South

Viet Nam. Recently I have been thinking of the simi-

larities and the differences between then and now.

Then, if a soldier was twenty-five years old, we called

him Grandpa. Now, when we call a soldier Grandpa,

it’s because he really is one.

Then, I remember seeing forklifts unloading pallets of

beer in Viet Nam. Here in Kuwait forklifts unload

pallets of bottled water (no beer here).

Then, we used to dream and talk of “Round-Eyed

American Girls”. Now, the soldier working next to

you may very well be an American girl (they com-

pose about 12% of us and generally they are hard

working, competent and professional).

In Viet Nam we were scroungers and fabricators.

We would drag up wood crates and steel barrels and

use re-straightened nails to make shelves and book-

cases.

In this respect, the soldiers in today’s Army are still

the same. I am continually amazed how 2X4s and

plywood lumber can be used to make life a little

more comfortable. As I walk between the rows of

tents I see elaborate covered patios with homemade

chairs and footrests - benches and tables. Some en-

terprising troops have even built a retreat between

the tents ”The Sand Lizard Saloon” complete with a

plywood bar and “Saxon” the two-foot long sand liz-

ard, where after a long hot dusty day, you can have a

cold coke or a non-alcoholic beer (see paragraph

above).

There are flagpoles next to tents with flags flying and

signs with arrows that point to towns that are far

away. Some things change, but thoughts of home

and Xs on calendars will always be the same.

In Viet Nam we were young and bold. WE would fly

our aircraft out to the bush each day and operate

where the rubber meets the road. We were the tip

of the sword - in the action - and we walked with a

swagger. We disliked REMFs. We called them

straphangers and bean counters. And we looked at

them with contempt.

Here in Kuwait I am a REMF. I am a rear echelon

pencil pusher. I’m not always sure where my Kevlar

is but I know where the mess hall and the MWR tent

are located, and I know where the best latrines are.

Each morning the flight crews gather in my opera-

tions tent and I give them a weather update - they

file their flight plans and they walk out to their heli-

copters with their bravado and their battle rattle. I

give them a smile and a wave and a quiet prayer.

Late in the day they walk back into the flight opera-

tions tent completely exhausted, dragging their rattle

and drinking water in large gulps. They call me Sir,

salute me, and look at me with contempt.

Ted Crandall - Delta Trooper— Mail Call in the Field 1969 Ted Crandall - Delta Troop Gathering - Still Reading 2012

HERE 42 YEARS LATER - TED MAIL CALL CRANDALL - IS READING HIS HAWK TALK The Annual Delta Troop Gathering at Ft Knox this past March was a great success. This ( just the guys ) group had the largest

turnout since 1991. Set at the customary Gold Vault Inn in Radcliff. Just across the street this year was a new watering hole

called the Old Glory Bar. The new proprietor welcomed our men with great enthusiasm . She said her bar was old school orien-

tated just for us seasoned veterans. ( Now did she mean salty or just old? ) In any case the men enjoyed the food and good times,

a short walk back to our rooms. All and all we had great weather and a great time all around. I met Ted Crandall again after 42

years and was able to complete his Then & Now photo for him. That was a kick. We saw many 1st timers show up and it was

good to see them again. We caught up, laughed at how much or how little the men have changed over the years. Only four out

of sixteen managed to pull off our traditional Sat night all-nighter. Times have Changed or maybe it’s just us that have changed a

little. We drink less, and sleep more these days. But we remember better the good times we had the night before. Not a bad

tradeoff I guess for the birthday totals. We will just have to do it again next year, somewhere. Paul the tourist Hanson

It is amazing after 42 years we seem to be able to pick up where we left off on so many topics. Of course laughing at how fat, bald, grey and ugly we have all become is a given for joking. Getting those

old stories straight on all those long ago events tests our gray matter to the max. Good Times

in our last issue of Hawk Talk Blackhawks Attention!

Afternoon Blackhawks I wanted to touch base after I received my Father's shadow box from Brian. Thank you for your help

while piecing together my Father's military career. I was too young when he passed to truly appreciate

his service. The shadow box is such a constant reminder of my Dad and I am indebted to you and Brian

for adding that to my life. I hope to learn more about my Dad's service and him as a young man from

some of the guys he served with. I have been in contact with John Little and he has referred me to an-

other guy, Don Knox, that may have known my Father. I will keep you apprised as I learn more.

Thank you again for the shadow box and for your service.

All the best,
