For my 60th birthday, my wife Kayanne asked me toshare with our children experiences that had asignificant impact on my life. There were about sixsuch events, half of which happened before the ageof twenty.

Upon reflection, it struck me how instrumental our early years are in

setting our course in life. This truth underscores the great responsibilitywe have here at Eagle Ranch with the children in our care.

Of course it is not just what happens in our life that is impactful, but howwe process it. It is our privilege at Eagle Ranch to walk alongside our boysand girls as they a ddress the painful experiences in their lives. Time andagain, I have heard from our graduates how profound the lessons theylearned at Eagle Ranch were in shaping who they have become as adults.

It is true that nothing is wasted in our lives; God is always shaping us andredeeming the bad to work for our good (Romans 8:28). We appreciateyour support that allows us to positively impact the children ofEagle Ranch.

Celebrating 30 Years: The Chapel in the WoodsSince Eagle Ranch opened its doors 30 years ago, the campus has grown to include many specmemorable places. The realization of a dream for a chapel was made possible through thegenerosity of Don and Nancy Panoz in May of 1993. The chapel is a place of rest and reflectionfor our children and staff. It also is the site of weekly staff worship services and devotionaltimes with the boys and girls.

“Even youths grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall.

But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength

renewed. They will soar with wings as eagles.”

Their families remain involved with the program through counseling, meetings and

activities. Children, as well as their families, are given goals to work toward so they ca

return home. They get the opportunity to work on these goals by going home every

other weekend and during holiday breaks. After going home for the Christmas break

students at Eagle Ranch School were asked to write about their time home. The child

were candid about what worked well and where things fell short, understanding tha

is all part of the process to help them work toward family restoration and renewal.

“My family and I had an amazing break. We all got along verywell, and if there were any problems, one of us would call ameeting. We expressed our feelings better than we did beforeEagle Ranch, so that’s definitely a plus! Before, I never reallyknew what Christmas was really about. It’s about love andtogetherness. Christmas means more to me now than ever,and I think that my family would say the same. I was able toponder how truly blessed I am to have a family that loves andcares about me. I have grown to be more thankful for my life,and my outlook on myself has changed drastically. I know thatGod loves and cares about me, and I love myself.”

“My Christmas break was very fun. The thingthat worked was trying not to talk back to myparents – because we all know that doesn’t getyou anywhere. The things that did not workwell at home were being rude, mumbling,and rolling my eyes. I would have to say I didsee some changes in me and my family. At onepoint, my twin brother tried to start anargument. I told him that I wasn’t going toargue with him. We had good days, and that isvery good for us.”

“My time at home was fun. I was able to bonand hang out with my family a lot. While ahome, my parents set some rules and they the choice-consequence method. That metworks well, and it kept me straight on whatI should do. Another thing is my parentshave enforced at home how homelife workat Eagle Ranch. Honestly, this would havebeen great for me and my family a year agoI really appreciate what the Ranch has donfor me.”

Invest in what you know.This is one of many valuable pieces of advice DianeMagnus learned from her daddy, Loyd Strickland.Sitting in the Chestnut Mountain office where

Strickland beckoned Eddie Staub in 1983 to providehim some of the first seed money for Eagle Ranch,Diane shared a few fond memories of her dad andthe Ranch. Joined by her husband, Doug Magnus,

President and CEO of Conditioned Air Systems, thecouple also reflected on their ongoing support.

What are some of your earliest memories of the Ranch?

Diane: We’ve known Eddie since he arrived in Georgia.I remember feeling like Eddie was my new brother. I hada lot of those because dad was involved in YoungLife. Buthe was the latest and greatest at the time. I remember dadwould say, “There’s something about that boy.” And theyreally had zero in common, except for a love for the Lord.

Doug: I remember Eddie sitting in front of my office in hislittle blue car in 1983. He came in and said, ‘Doug we needyou.’ And I said, ‘Eddie you don’t need me as bad as I needyou.’ I was just getting into my business. We couldn’t do a

lot to begin with, but over time we were able to do more. It’sbeen amazing to watch the Ranch grow and to watch ourbusiness grow. We’ve all just grown together in this community.

Diane: Eddie asked my dad to open doors. He was ready todo the work; he just didn’t know who he needed to see. SoDaddy introduced Eddie to people like Sonny Ellis. Sonny’sstamp of approval opened doors because he didn’t give it toeveryone. One meeting led to the next and set things off.

You have helped sponsor and host Ranch events, giveregularly to our Honor & Memorial Program and

provide ongoing support for the Ranch. Tell us moreabout your history of support and why you do it.

Doug: We’ve been providing heating and airconditioning since the start. In the early days,some of my guys would give up their Saturdaysto get the work done. The first building we puta system into was the first administrationoffice, which was also Eddie’s first real homeon the Ranch.

Diane: I think with the passage of time, we’reeven more excited than we were back then inthe beginning. I first knew about the Ranchbecause of my dad and his support to help get

it started. Then Doug got involved. Then wesupported it together. And now we’re bringingour children into it. Our children love EagleRanch and support it too at their level. I thinkpeople support the Ranch because it makesyou feel like it belongs to you – people feellike it’s theirs.

Doug: When Diane’s dad’s foundation closed out,we wanted to continue to support the Ranch andits maintenance, so we started a foundation ofour own. The Ranch was the first line item forour foundation.

What do you tell others about Eagle Ranch?

Doug: I keep the book On Eagle’s Wings in theoffice, and I’ll give them to friends who I thinkit would mean something to, who might want togive their support.

Diane: It’s sort of like a parent talking about their

child — that real love. Eagle Ranch has proven itscommitment. Supporting it is a way to honor ourfaith. The Ranch wouldn’t be there without hugeamounts of faith. But faith uses hands and feet

too. It’s been a blessing to not only the childwho have been there, but to this communityI still tell Eddie to this day that his dream, hi

vision, was small compared to God’s dream,vision. There’s that saying: God can always da bigger dream than we can. I think He did. now you see it. It’s just a special place.

What does it take for a failing class clown whowas expelled from school to make honor roll andset his sights on becoming a pediatric surgeon?For Kage, 14, the answer is simple: peoplewho care.

Smaller classes and individual attention fromteachers helped Kage realize he was capable ofmaking better grades. But the game changer wasthe relationships he’s formed in the communityaround him at the Ranch.

“My social studies teacher goes to my church,so I get to talk to him whenever I want to aboutwhen the next test will be and stuff like that,”he said. He likes that teachers will take time toexplain details and answer questions. Theenvironment at the Peace Home where he stayshas furthered his success, and helped him makehonor roll each semester this school year.

“I get a lot more study time at the house andtime to think about things,” he said. “I’ll ask myfriends in the house to help me if I need it, andsometimes I help them.”

“I love working with kids, and I love sciencKage said. “So I think being a surgeon woube perfect.”

The spirit of community and the relationsKage has formed changed his attitude abouschool and Eagle Ranch. “I hated school. I hlearning,” he recalled. “But I started gettingsocial studies, and I was doing well in matI was like, ‘Wow. I can do this.’”

The change is rippling to other areas of his as well. “I still struggle with acting out anddisrespect, but everything is starting to chaIt helps that there are a lot of people who cabout me here. I just love it here.”
