Highlights of the October Meeting

Dolf Strom welcomed meeting attendees. Shari Charleston led the Pledge of Allegiance. At-tendees celebrated Warren Koepsel’s 90

th Birth-

day. Warren was one of the original founders of the Club.

Diane Bennett announced that the Holiday Luncheon will be on December 11 (see page 5) and the Spring Picnic on April 15. Tickets will be available for the Luncheon at the next meeting or contact Diane direct.

Our featured speaker was Erick Radwanski, a 9 year volunteer with Hospice of the Valley, the largest free-standing non-profit hospice in the US.

Dementia is an umbrella term for diseases and conditions characterized by a decline in memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking skills that affect a person's ability to perform eve-ryday activities.

60-80% of dementias are Alzheimer’s but other types do exist. Alzheimer’s is the 4

th leading

cause of death in Arizona affecting 1 of 10 age 65 and older - 1 in 3 age 85 and older. It is estimated that by 2050, 14 million Americans will be living with Alzheimer’s.

Dementia progression typically begins with grad-ual memory loss, followed by difficulty manag-ing daily activities, communication problems, trouble walking and ultimately loss of bladder and bowel control.

Warning signs include: Recent memory loss affecting job skills Difficulty performing tasks Problems with language. Misplacing things Trouble with abstract thinking

Diagnosis of dementia involves understand-ing of family history, physical and neurolog-ical assessments, lab tests, cognitive assessments and brain scans. Medications may help with some symptoms and individu-al care plans may help cognition and daily activities. Sensory stimulations can help such as music or pets.

Life expectancy with Alzheimer’s is between 2 and 22 years with the average being 6-8 years.

Hospice care is covered by Medicare and can be provided both in-home and in specialized facilities. Palliative care from Hospice of the Valley provides in-home educators, 24/7 support, geriatrician access, volunteers for caregiver respite with no cost for the 1

st

month.

Erick stressed that is critically important to have advanced directives in place and that they should be reviewed and updated if re-quired every 5 years or sooner.

The 50/50 drawings were won by Bill Ran-dall and Bob Schenamsgruber.

November 6 Meeting - Fraud

Rob Foster, AARP

Our speaker will be Rob Foster, a volunteer community educa-

tor with AARP. He is a retired engineer and supply chain di-

rector who lives in Ahwatukee. He first volunteered with AARP

eleven years ago as an income tax preparer and now also de-

livers talks on Medicare, Social Security, and Fraud.

AARP is a United States-based interest group whose stated mission is "to empower people to choose how

they live as they age". According to the organization, it had more than 38 million members as of 2018.

President’s Column

Our October meeting speaker topic was What is Dementia Anyway? and the speaker was Erick Radwanski, a 9 year volunteer with Hospice of the Valley. He was very informative.

We had no new members in the October. Total new members for this year is 10 which is good but we need more in order to survive. We get new members through referrals. Honeywell Aero HQ no longer provides us with a list of retirees. It is up to the young members, those who joined since 2009 to bring in your friends and coworkers to our club.

Our second challenge is that we need a new Fit-It Guy coordinator. Warren Koepsel has done a great job for many years and he recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Warren would like to retir-ee but is willing to stay on the job until the end of this year. The Fix-It Guys need a coordinator. Someone please volunteer. The Fix-It column in the Newsletter has more info. Recently one of the Fix-It guys told me that his incentive to be a Fix-It guy was helping those that needed help with his handyman skills. Please contact any board member or Warren Koepsel if you have any questions about the job and would like to be the coordinator.

Last month we had our second Happy Hour event. It was held at Fate Brewery South just 1.7 miles from where we meet. The good news is that the beer and 12 inch pizzas were great. The not so good news there was only 5 of us. So that s the end of organized happy hours but some of us plan to continue going to Fate after our meetings. All of you are welcome to join us and I will still do free drinks if you bring a new member to our cub. Fate also has wine, cocktails, and other food items.

Our big upcoming event is the December Holiday Charity Luncheon. Please see the notice in the newsletter and contact Diane Bennett to attend.

See you at our November meeting.

New Honeywell Corporate policy prevents providing the Club with names of new retirees or deceased em-ployees. We need all Club Members to inform us if you know of a new retiree or the passing of a former employee.

Editor’s Corner

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm. Club Monthly Board Meetings will now be held at the Scottsdale Senior Center (same location as meetings) at 11:30 am in Room 10. Feel free to bring a lunch, meet with the Board and provide your thoughts and input.

The history of Honeywell, old editions of the Newsletter and a link to Scholarship Program information and forms can be found on the HGRC webpage http://www.garrettretireesaz.com/

If there is something that you would like to see in the newsletter, or if you want to comment on the Newsletter itself, e-mail the in-formation to [email protected]! We will publish, space available and the approval of the Board. Any comments or claims made within the publication are solely the responsibility of the individual authors and do not necessarily express the views of Honeywell Inc. or the Directors, Officers, Staff or members of the Honeywell-Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona. If we are notified of employ-ment opportunities, we will send to members by a special email.

With our revised club guidelines that will change the roles and increase the number of Board Members, we are again encouraging members to attend Board Meetings as a guest to influence and support Club policies.

Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

We are starting a new segment entitled “Where Are They Now?” which will highlight past scholarship recipients and their stories after graduating from college. If you have a family member who is a past recipient and has graduated, please send one or two para-graphs to Cheryl Wiley at [email protected] detailing where they are working and how receiving our scholarship helped them throughout their college years.

One of our first recipients was Paige Sherman, nee Kratzke, granddaughter of Shirley Krieger, who is retired from Satellite Systems Operations (SSO).

In May 2014, Paige obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Eller College at The University of Arizona as well as a minor in Psychology. After obtaining her degree, she accepted a position handling insurance claims at The Hartford where she had a very successful career. Paige is now working as an Investigative Specialist where she investigates insurance fraud. In addition to her current role, Paige takes on stretch as-signments and is working towards a position of leadership. She is very thankful to have been given the opportunity to receive the Honeywell scholarship.

Paige recently told us “the scholarship was very impactful toward helping me obtain my degree and financially supporting me to be where I am today in my career! Thanks and gratitude, Paige.”

Sponsored by HGRC, HRSC and AAC Retirees Clubs

Our purpose is to help club members and or surviving spouses who may need assistance with handyman type repairs and will appreciate saving some money.

Currently there are seven Fix-It guys and Warren Koepsel, coordinator. If you have such a need, call Warren at 480.510.9304 and leave a mess- age giving your name, phone number, description of the job, and near- est cross streets.

We can probably help and will get back to you as soon as possible. We furnish the labor at no cost to you - you furnish the cost of the materials or parts.

The Fix-It guys are: HGRC -- Bob Davenport, Frank Holman, Stu Mitnik

HRSC -- Lee Rippstein, Dan Schott, and new member Paul Wiley AAC -- Bob Farney

Our coordinator Warren Koepsel has done a great job and recently celebrated his 90th

birthday. He would like to retiree by the end of the year. The Clubs needs someone to

volunteer to be the new coordinator. For more info about the coordinator function, feel

free to contact Warren, 480.510.9304.

Monthly Charity News

Our club donates to two types of recipients using two sources of funds. From our dues, we allocate $100 per month to local non-profit charities. Consideration is given to charities that provided speakers to our monthly meetings. The charities are selected and funds are distributed at the May board meeting unless a speaker re-ceives the funds at the club meeting..

A list of the charities that we have supported in the past is posted on our website. If you have a favorite char-ity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.

Also from our dues, we donate $100 per month, $800 total, to the Scholarship Foundation. In addition our members can donate directly to the Scholarship Foundation. Member donations to date are $4430.

This Club season donations will be selected at the May Board Meeting and reported in the following September Newsletter

Hello fellow Honeywell retirees! My name is Cheryl Wiley. I am the Scholarship Board’s new Chairperson. A great big THANK YOU to Gwen Scheetz and Jim Redmond for all their help as they transition off the Board, and new people volunteering their time for this worthy cause. Please welcome our new Board members Paul Christopherson, Mary Harris and Brian Unsworth. We look forward to implementing the Board’s goals for this Application and Award season.

THANK YOU to everyone who made donations last year. All of you who gave are making a difference in the lives of our deserving recipients. The cost of a college education has been in-creasing yearly. And as you’ve probably seen in the news recently, student loan debt is at an all-time high. Our recipients are very grateful for your generous donations, as is the Board!

Students receiving our scholarships are all family members of retired Honeywell & Garrett em-ployees. By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family mem-bers of people you worked with for years. Applications will be accepted starting December 1 and are due no later than April 1, 2020. If you have a family member who would qualify for our scholarship, please send them an application and encourage them to submit it in a timely man-ner. Applications can be found on our website at www.hrcaz.org. Click on the Scholarships tab on the left side of the page.

Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3) so donations should be tax deductible on your state and federal returns (check with your tax advi-sor).

If you would like to donate at any time throughout our fiscal year, please make your check pay-able to: Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation

Sign-up Deadline is November 16. Sign up Now!!

Our community service project this year will be helping out the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. As we have for the last two years, we will be joining Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun (RTVOS), a charitable organization based in Tempe. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, December 14. We will work from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Jerry Colangelo Branch at 1755 N. 34

th Ave in Phoenix. Water

and lunch will be provided. And T-shirts for all.

A variety of projects include painting, landscaping, assem-bling gaming tables, designing a library reading space, and building a LEGO wall. Family members aged 14 or older may also volunteer.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix offer afford-able after-school and summer programs for 27,000+ stu-dents in grades K-12, empowering young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible members of our community.

This is a great opportunity for all our retiree clubs to im-prove our community while spending quality time with other retirees and active employees. Our project last year had around 100 volunteers both current employees and re-tirees. The pictures here are from last year’s project.

Volunteer check-in at the event will start at 7:30. The dead-line for signing up is Saturday, November 16. If you are at all interested, or have any questions, contact Doug Metzger at [email protected] or 602-319-6637, and we’ll get you more information as it comes along.

Words of Wisdom from Aviators:

In the Alaskan bush I'd rather have a two-hour bladder and three hours of gas than vice ver-sa.

You define a good flight by negatives: you didn't get hijacked, you didn't crash, you didn't throw up, you weren't late, and you weren't nauseated by the food. So you're grateful.

Two old guys are pushing their carts around Wal-Mart When they collide. The first old guy says to the second guy, 'Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn't paying attention to where I was going.'

The second old guy says, 'That's OK, it's a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too. I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate'

The first old guy says, 'Well, Maybe I can help you find her. What does she look like?'

The second old guy says, 'Well, she is 27 yrs old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, long legs, and is wearing short shorts. What does your wife look like?'

To which the first old guy says, 'Doesn't matter--- let's look for yours.'

Pilots: People who drive airplanes for other people who can't fly.

Fighter Pilots: Cold, steely eyed, weapons systems managers who kill bad

people and break things. However, they can also be very charming and per-

sonable. The average Fighter Pilot, despite sometimes having a swaggering

exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy

and caring. These feelings just don't involve anyone else.
