Honeycomb Weave :

These weaves has partial resemblance to the hexagonal honey comb cells of

wax in which bees store their honey.

So it is HONEYCOMB.

Honeycomb weaves form ridges and hollows which give a cell like appearan

ce to the textures.

Hollow Formation:

The vertical ridge of' the fabric is composed of warp floats, an

d the horizontal ridge is composed of weft floats, while the hollow is formed

where the two opposite twill lines cross each other.

Classification:

Honeycomb weaves are two types...

1. Ordinary honey comb

2. Brighton honey comb

Ordinary Honeycomb:

1. Appearance : cell like appearance with ridges and hollows.

2. Crossing: a single line crossing single line or double line crossing a

double diagonal line.

3. Draft: Constructed with pointed drafts.

4. Reversible fabric: These fabrics have similar effect on both sides.

5. Surface: Rough.

6. Repeat size: multiple of two, smallest repeat size = 6x4

7. Formation of cells: ordinary honey comb forms only one cell per repeat

Uses: suitable for

1. Hand towels,

2. Glass cloths,

3. Dispensed roller towels and

4. Bath mats, (where moisture absorption properties are particularl

y desired)

5. In coarse cotton qualities it is also used for quilts and soft furnis

hings,

6. In finer qualities for shirts and brocades.

1. Non-reversible : These cloths have face appears different from back side of the

cloth

2. Draft: Constructed on straight drafts only

3. Repeat size: it is a multiple of 4 ( Length of longest float is N/2 – 1, where N is the

repeat size)

4. Crossing: A single diagonal line crosses a double diagonal line

5. Formation of cells: Formation of 4 cells per repeat i.e., two large and two small

cells.

6. Fabric surface: Rough.

End uses:

Although the weave is not as popular as the ordinary honeycomb, it is used in

similar qualities for more decorative end uses such as quilts and brocades and in some

cases, hand towels and glass cloths. It is also suitable for crockery towels
