Honey BabyThis shawl is worked entirely in the round from the center Setup through Section C, where the hem edging is then knitted on to the live body stitches by working back and forth in rows. Change from DPNs to circular needles as the size of the knitted piece allows. For each round throughout the shawl construction, written instructions represent all stitches along one side of the square; the entire line is then repeated for the remaining three sides. Within each side, the repeating motif is represented by (the series of sts within parens). Markers are indicated throughout pattern as a convenience for organizing sts; use of them is optional.

SetupUsing any provisional cast-on method and leaving a 6 tail, place 8 sts on a larger DPN needle as follows:[CO 1, PM, CO 1] 4 times.Divide sts over four DPNs so that there are 2 sts on each needle. Join to work in the round, taking care not to twist sts. Next rnd: purl aroundNote: Each needle now carries the sts for one of the four shawl sides [indicated throughout instructions by square brackets]; the marker on each needle divides the sts of the side panel from the corner sts. Throughout construction, increases worked at either end of the side panel will cause the stitch count for each side to grow. While working on DPNs, take care that the YO at the beginning of each written line does not fall off the needle. Next rnd: [k1, SM, yo, k1, yo] 4 times around (each needle now carries 4 sts)Next rnd: purl aroundBegin pattern (charted pattern and legend for all charts appear on page 8):R1: [yo, k1, yo, SM, (k1, yo) twice, k1] 4 times aroundR2: [p3, SM, p1, k3, p1] 4 times aroundR3: [yo, k3, yo, SM, k5] 4 times aroundR4: [p5, SM, p1, k3, p1] 4 times aroundR5: [yo, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1] 4 times aroundR6: [k7, SM, p1, k3, p1] 4 times aroundR7: [yo, k2tog, (k1, yo) twice, k1, ssk, yo, SM, k5] 4 times aroundR8: [k9, SM, p1, k3, p1] 4 times aroundR9: [yo, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1] 4 times aroundR10: [k11, SM, p1, k3, p1] 4 times aroundR11: [yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk, yo, SM, k5] 4 times aroundR12: [k13, SM, p1, k3, p1] 4 times aroundR13: [yo, k2tog, k4, yo, k1, yo, k4, ssk, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1] 4 times aroundR14: [k1, PM, k12, PM, k2, SM, p1, k3, p1] 4 times aroundThis completes the setup section [80 total sts: 15 side panel sts + 5 corner sts on each of four sides]. The new set of markers placed in R14 will mark the beginning and end of the repeating motif within the side panel; sts outside those markers are remainder sts.

Section A: Beehive Lace (charted pattern appears on page 9; legend appears on page 8)Note: In this section, the repeating motif consists of (the group of sts within parens), which is worked just once in the fi rst 20 rows and increases by two repeats (24 sts) each time the 20-row pattern is worked. Move pattern markers outward by 12 sts on each side while working R20 to accommodate this increase. When it is time to move to the circular needle, add a marker after each set of corner sts to mark the start of the next side panel. From here, the instructions include the use of this marker.R1: [yo, k1, yo, SM, (k1, yo, ssk, p7, k2tog, yo) repeat to next marker, SM, k1, yo, k1, yo, SM, k5, SM] 4 times aroundR2: [k3, SM, (k3, p7, k2) repeat to next marker, SM, k4, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR3: [yo, k2tog, k1, yo, SM, (k1, yo, k1, ssk, p5, k2tog, k1, yo) repeat to next marker, SM, k1, yo, k1, ssk, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1, SM] 4 times aroundR4: [k4, SM, (k4, p5, k3) repeat to next marker, SM, k5, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR5: [yo, k2tog, k2, yo, SM, (k1, yo, k2, ssk, p3, k2tog, k2, yo) repeat to next marker, SM, k1, yo, k2, ssk, yo, SM, k5, SM] 4 times aroundR6: [k5, SM, (k5, p3, k4) repeat to next marker, SM, k6, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR7: [yo, k2tog, k3, yo, SM, (k1, yo, k3, ssk, p1, k2tog, k3, yo) repeat to next marker, SM, k1, yo, k3, ssk, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1, SM] 4 times aroundR8: [k6, SM, (k6, p1, k5) repeat to next marker, SM, k7, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR9: [yo, k2tog, k4, yo, SM, (k1, yo, k4, sl1 k2tog psso, k4, yo) repeat to next marker, SM, k1, yo, k4, ssk, yo, SM, k5, SM] 4 times aroundR10: [knit across all sts to edging marker, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR11: [yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, ssk, p3, SM, (p4, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, p3) repeat to next marker, SM, p4, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1, SM] 4 times aroundR12: [k6, p3, SM, (p4, k5, p3) repeat to next marker, SM, p4, k6, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR13: [yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, p2, SM, (p3, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, p2) repeat to next marker, SM, p3, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, yo, SM, k5, SM] 4 times aroundR14: [k8, p2, SM, (p3, k7, p2) repeat to next marker, SM, p3, k8, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR15: [yo, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, p1, SM, (p2, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, p1) repeat to next marker, SM, p2, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1, SM] 4 times aroundR16: [k10, p1, SM, (p2, k9, p1) repeat to next marker, SM, p2, k10, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR17: [yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk, SM, (p1, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk) repeat to next marker, SM, p1, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk, yo, SM, k5, SM] 4 times aroundR18: [k12, SM, (p1, k11) repeat to next marker, SM, p1, k12, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundNote: in R19, shift the pattern markers one stitch right to accommodate the double decrease.R19: [yo, k2tog, k4, yo, k1, yo, k4, SM, (sl1 k2tog psso, k4, yo, k1, yo, k4) repeat to next marker, SM, sl1 k2tog psso, k4, yo, k1, yo, k4, ssk, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1, SM] 4 times aroundR20: [knit across all sts to edging marker, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundRepeat these 20 rows three times MORE, removing the pattern markers on the last repeat of R20 (leave corner markers in place).Work a reverse stockinette ridge over the next 4 rows as follows:R1: [yo, purl across to the fi rst corner marker, yo, SM, k5, SM] 4 times aroundR2: [purl across to the fi rst corner marker, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times aroundR3: [yo, purl across to the fi rst corner marker, yo, SM, k1, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1, SM] 4 times aroundR4: [k3, PM, knit to 4 sts before next marker, PM, k4, SM, p1, k3, p1, SM] 4 times around

Hem Edging (to be worked on smaller needle over 816 sts of the entire hem edge; chart appears on page 9)Note: At the end of each even-numbered (WS) row, work the k2tog using the remaining edging stitch along with the next stitch from the group waiting on the body needle. One stitch from the shawl body will be used for every two edging rows worked. Use of a separate DPN to knit alternate rows may alleviate turning of entire work for each row.Use the backward loop method where casting on extra stitches is indicated. The winglets at the ends of the shawl edges are created by casting on 2 sts, turning work, and immediately binding off 2 sts, leaving one stitch on the RH needle (which is not part of the following set of sts). Setup: With RS facing and using a provisional cast-on method, place 8 sts on the RH needle, then turn and work the following WS setup row: k1, p3, k1, yo, (k2tog) twiceTurn work to RS and begin edging pattern on R1R1 (RS): sl 1, k1, yo, k2tog, k4R2 (WS): k1, p3, k1, yo, (k2tog) twiceR3: sl 1, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, sl1 k2tog psso, yo, k1, CO2R4: BO2 (1 st remains on RH needle), p3, k1, yo, (k2tog) twiceRepeat these 4 rows 415 times MORE around entire hem. Work two extra repeats at each corner by working 4 edging rows into every ONE body st, for two sts before and after each center corner stitch. When edging is complete, remove the provisional cast-on at start, slide the resulting 8 sts to a spare needle, and graft the two live edges using kichener stitch.

FinishingAt shawl center, remove the provisional cast-on, thread the yarn tail through the resulting live stitches, and pull snugly to close hole. Secure with a small stitch, then weave in all loose ends inconspicuously on WS of fabric. Soak shawl in lukewarm water with a small amount of wool soap added for approximately 60 minutes or until fi ber is completely saturated. Rinse and squeeze out excess moisture by rolling the piece in a towel. Stretch slightly (keep some of the fabric density) and pin piece to the fi nished measurements on page 1. Allow to air dry completely before unpinning.
