clinical activities in Atima included:
3,862 total patient encounters
2,842 adult and pediatric examinations
1,020 referrals to specialists.
The Rotary Clubs of Santa Barbara, Honduras, Baltimore, Aberdeen, Columbia, Ellicott City, So. Anne Arundel County, Gr. Severna Park, & Hunt Valley, MD, & The Organization for Community Health Outreach-OCHO raised funds to support the construction of an Agua Clara (Cornell Univ.) water purification facility to serve a village of 3,500 people in Atima. Rotary International matched the funds at $28,930 for a total of $76,445.The Municipal Government of Atima pledged $20,000

Podiatry: 75 patients received podiatric surgical procedures and/or prescription medications.
Specialists:Dentistry: 140 patients were treated for carious & infectious tooth disease.
Obstetrics-Gynecology: 122 patients were evaluated by both clinical & ultrasound examinations. Pregnant women were given prenatal counseling and vitamin supplements.The obstetrician-gynecologist also treated a number of common gynecologic diseases, including infections. Birth control counseling and condoms were provided.

Pediatrics: 333 children were evaluated by one of the team pediatricians. 34 children required emergency treatment for asthma attacks, dehydration and infectious illnesses. (children with Scabies or Lice were washed and given clean clothes and shoes)
Ophthalmology: 271 patients were evaluated. Eye exams & free corrective eyeglasses and medications were given to treat simple eye conditions. Sight-threatening cataracts were removed surgically.

A health fair was conducted throughout the week at the clinic. Educational materials were distributed to adults and children.
Children were taught about the need for frequent hand washing to reduce illness through displays, educational coloring materials and hand washing stickers.

Our Agua Clara liaison, Dan Smith, displayed a model of the water purification plant to educate the community about how the new treatment plant will improve their water and health.

Inside the Marcala gravity treatment plant, water flows through the sedimentation tanks & is filtered to remove suspended particles (including clay, dirt, and bacteria). Chlorine is added to kill any remaining disease-spreading organisms.
