PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As part of the Comenius program and in association with partner schools from Greece, Slovenia, Finland, Turkey, Belgium, Lithuania, Spain, Romania we have prepared a two year project entitled “Homo Economicus”. The main objectives of the project are to increase the students' awareness of the economic impact in their lives, to motivate them for better understanding of consumption habits, to become more aware of problems of consumerism, to foster learning of a foreign language and ICT tools, to exchange pedagogical methods, to make new friends and to develop the personalities of all participants. Our project consists of learning economics rules of every day life in multidisciplinary subjects in an agreeable, though serious way. It will enable us to broaden the knowledge and competence of students in the fields of mathematics, economics, sociology, history and new technology. We want to increase the students' conscience in the globalized world as responsible consumers, finding balance with personal interest and sustainable development. Students, guided by teachers, will make a list of products; investigate prices; calculate HEC (consumer price index), compare it over time and between countries; learn about economic crises and how they influence our living standard, present findings to the National Statistic Agency; take, exchange and expose photos, videos of the average teenager consumption and photos of different stores. They will make a didactic game. At the same time students will investigate employment possibilities and average salaries in the large Europe labour market and think about what kind of knowledge and competence will be needed in future.

WHAT WE DID …

MONDAY

Monday, our very first day in Slovenia, our very first day at MC Hostel and our very first day together.

When we arrived, nice people came to meet us and presented to us our new little houses. We were very enthusiastic to be here and we couldn´t wait to meet the other students who became our friends in a very short time. So the most expected moment of the day was here. We didn´t know what will happen, we didn´t know what are we going to eat, we had a lot of questions that in a short time got answers.

When we entered in kitchen for our welcoming dinner, the little hearts with our names were waiting for us and we were separated from our classmates and teachers, but that was a good thing, because we got to know each other better. So, after a few minutes the kitchen was very noisy because everybody was so happy to meet totally new people and cultures. A good cook came to cook for us the most delicious traditional Slovenian food like: cheese dumplings, Kranjska sausage, Walnuts potica, Beef soup, Apple small parcel, Pork roast meat and many others. We enjoyed it and ate a lot.

After that we took some pictures, laughed a lot, talked and find interesting new things about each other. Because everybody was tired we went to sleep to be fresh for the next day.

TUESDAY

It was a very rainy day, but that couldn´t stop us to be enthusiastic about our new activities together. We went to the school where 3 of the Slovenian students were waiting for us with traditional music and suits. Other students from here presented us some interesting things about Slovenia and their school, sang a song for us and made us feel welcome in here.

After that we found out a lot of information about Slovenia, then was our turn to present our country, school and hobbies. We enjoyed it, we laughed and felt a little bit smarter. We had a break when we could visit the school which impressed us.

We enjoyed a workshop in teams about shopping behavior. We all did a very good job and afterwards we presented it to the teachers. We had lunch at a great restaurant where we could talk and get to know each other better. After the great meal we had free time when we went to the market, we played in the gym and then the girls from Belgium cooked spaghetti for us, we ate like a family and we played a game that helped us to discover more interesting things about each other. We had a really good time.

FRIDAY

On Friday we travelled to Gorenjska. Our first destination was Bled, more precisely the Bled castle. There we heard about history of the castle, the legend about the island in the middle of the lake and a sunken bell. We visited the castle printing office, museum on the castle, gothic castle chapel and enjoyed a wonderful sunny day. The legend is called ''Bell of Wishes'' and according to the story an inconsolable widow lived in the castle whose husband was killed by bandits, she collected all her gold and silver and had it melt for the bell in the chapel on the island, but on it's way there was a huge storm so it sunk to the bottom of the lake and some say you can hear it during heavy storms from the depths. The widow later collected all her belongings, went to Rome and become a nun. After many years new bell was sent from Rome to island and it remains to present days. From the castle we moved towards the restaurants where lunch was already waiting for us. After lunch some of the students and teachers rent bicycles and rode around the lake, some just walked around and others sat and enjoyed a warm sunny afternoon.

In the end of the day we went to see Vintgar. It's a gorge, about 1,6 km long. We were impressed by noisy stream of river Radovna. It's been discovered in 1891 by two people and it was complete coincidence. This gorge is one of most important attraction of Slovenia. There we had a walk and took some photos. It was getting colder and darker when we were leaving Gorenjska.

WORKSHEETS

Students worked on different tasks during the project meeting. On the first day they tasted traditional Slovenian cuisine and learned some expressions. During the second day they discussed and presented teenagers’ shopping habits on posters. During our visit of Ljubljana they asked inhabitants about Dragon legend, traditional Slovenian souvenirs, they took funny photos and recited Slovenian anthem Zdravljica on Prešeren Square. They were split in three groups and worked on different tasks on Thursday. The first group went to Brežice and visited three stores to find out average prices for different kind of food. They compared prices. The second group designed bulletin and the third group designed two questionnaires about their consumption habits and what products are mostly bought by their families. The last one is essential for price observation and calculating inflation.

So today you are visiting Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. We won't guide you in a typical way. There won't be a

tourist guide waiting for us in Ljubljana to present us the city in the most boring way possible. YOU will be your

own guides today. We prepared some instructions (please, follow them so you don't get lost) and exercises that

you will have to solve. So first things first, some Ljubljana's most recognizable landmarks are:

• The Dragon Bridge - (Slovene: Zmajski most) is a road bridge located in Ljubljana. It is situated in the northeast of Vodnik Square (main Ljubljana market) across the Ljubljanica River. It was built in the beginning of the 20th century; the bridge is today protected as a technical monument. The Greek legend about Jazon, who stole the golden fleece, tells us a story how he and his Argonauts killed a dragon in Ljubljana on their way back to Greece. Another legend says that the dragons wag their tails when an adult virgin woman crosses the bridge…

• Ljubljanica – the river with seven names. The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, is situated on the river. It is a karstic river and disappears seven times underground and each time it reappears with a different name as Trbuhovica, Obrh, Stržen, Rak, Pivka, Unica, and finally Ljubljanica. It is 41 km long and flows into the Sava River.

• Ljubljana market - Designed by architect Joze Plecnik between 1940 and 1944, the central complex consists largely of elegant Renaissance-influenced arcades that follow the river flow.

• The Town hall - (Slovene: Mestna hiša, also known as Rotovž or Magistrat) in Ljubljana is the seat of the City Municipality of Ljubljana. It is located on the Town Square in the city centre close to the St. Nicholas Cathedral. In the mid 1920s, a monument to the Serbian and first Yugoslav king Peter I was erected at the entrance of the Town Hall. The monument, designed by the architect Jože Plečnik, was removed and destroyed by the Fascist Italian occupation authorities of the Province of Ljubljana in April 1941.

• The Robba fountain - or the Fountain of three rivers of Carniola is the most famous well in Ljubljana with its sculptures made of white marble, completed in 1751. The author of the well, Francesca Robba, almost went bankrupt because of expensive material and long-lasting work. It used to be placed in front of the Ljubljana town hall in the city square, on the crossroad of three of city streets. A replica has replaced the original since August 2008. The original is in the national gallery.

• Triple bridge - (Slovene: Tromostovje) across the Ljubljanica river connects the Ljubljana's historical, medieval town on one bank, and the modern city of Ljubljana on the other. In order to prevent the 1842 stone arch bridge from being a bottleneck, two additional pedestrian bridges on both sides of the central one were added in 1932 designed by a notable Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. All three bridges are now part of the pedestrian only zone from 2008.

• Prešeren square and statue - (Slovene: Prešernov trg) is the central square in Ljubljana. Prešeren Square is a major meeting point in Ljubljana, where concerts, sport events, political events and other types of events take place. The square and surroundings have been closed to traffic since 1 September 2007. Only a tourist train leaves Prešeren Square every day, transporting tourists to the Ljubljana Castle. A statue of the Slovene national poet France Prešeren with a muse stands in the middle of the square. The Prešeren Statue was created by Ivan Zajec in 1905. The statue faces the window where Prešeren's "muse" used to live.

• Ljubljana castle - (Slovene: Ljubljanski grad) is a medieval castle in Ljubljana. It is located on Castle Hill (Grajski grič) overlooking the old town.

TASKS:

Let's get started. First we will visit Ljubljana castle. We will get there with the funicular. There will be a guided tour

of the castle. In the castle you will have to find an icon of a dragon and take a photo of it. Take a picture of the city

from the viewing terrace.

From the castle we will head down to the city, where you will be your own guides. You’ll have 2 hours time to

explore the city. All students are divided in five groups by the colour of paper (so every group has its own colour of

paper). You have to discuss tasks in English.

From Ljubljana market you go to the Dragon bridge (check your map, it’s number 20). There you will take a few

photos of it. You know the legend of the Dragon, but do the locals know it? Ask the passers-by about the legend of

the dragon, and write down their answers. Or, if they agree you can also film them.

Return to the Ljubljana market (number 18), where you can buy some typical Slovenian souvenirs. There’s another

task for you – ask people passing about typical Slovenian souvenirs that they know and they would recommend

you to buy. Write down their answers. Or, if they agree you can also film them.

Take a walk to the Triple bridge (number 17 on your map). You’ll have to be innovative. ☺ Take a picture of your

group or individuals in the funniest and most interesting way possible. Capture your ‘’photo shooting session’’ on

camera (someone should film it).

From there, move on to the Town market. You’ll take a few photos of the Robba fountain which is in front of the

Tawn hall.

And the last thing to do is to go to Prešeren square (number 15 on the map). There you learn the Slovenian

anthem ‘’Zdravljica’’ in Slovenian. You’ll stand in front of the statue of Prešeren and sing it. Again, you’ll film it. ☺.

Živé naj vsi naródi, ki hrepené dočakat' dan,

da, koder sonce hodi, prepir iz svéta bo pregnan,

ko rojak prost bo vsak,

ne vrag, le sosed bo mejak!

God's blessing on all nations, Who long and work for that bright day,

When o'er earth's habitations No war, no strife shall hold its sway;

Who long to see That all men free

No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

You will need all the materials for workshops tomorrow (to make bulletin). Do not forget the camera, connection

wires… Some materials will be uploaded on the project web site and we are going to spend wonderful time

working together.

Dear students!

Your task is to visit four different shops: Lidl, Spar, Hofer and Mercator. Probably, you are familiar with the first

three due to their long presence on European market. But Mercator is the Slovenian trade company with a long

tradition. You will be asked to write down the prices of ten different items. To compare these products without

any difficulty, we have carefully chosen the items that you are going to examine.

• The cheapest white bread, price per kilogram

• The cheapest long-life milk - 3.5% fat, price per litre

• Bananas – ordinary, non–ecological production, price per kilogram

• The cheapest fresh tomato – ordinary, non-ecological production, price per kilogram

• Milk chocolate Milka 100 grams

• The cheapest mineral water 1.5 litre

• Poultry 1 kilogram (the whole chucken)

• Cooking oil 1 litre

• Wine 1 litre (high-quality)

• Cigarettes

Lidl Spar Hofer Mercator

You will be asked to take photos of each group of products as well as an individual item because we will compare

different settings up of products within the individual group in different shops and among different countries. The

groups of products are: bakery products, dairy products, fruit, vegetables, sweets, non-alcoholic drinks-beverages,

alcoholic drinks, meat, fat and tobacco products.

You will present your results to other participants of the project meeting at school at 12.00 o'clock. (What shop is

the cheapest, which one is the tidiest and neatest or where the shop assistants understand English or the prices

can be compared to the prices in your country. Write down the names of products in your language, too.)

Presentations (Transparencies):

1. Group presentation (a picture and names)

2. Task presentation

3. Work presentation (what did you do)

4. Results (prices, are the prices abroad higher or lower, the cheapest shop, the tidiest and neatest shop,

attitude of employees towards buyers, write down the names of products in languages of present

students)

5. Impression of students (the most interesting and exciting experience of the project week)
