IN THE BEGINNING

The configuration of your bathroom will be determined in part by the location of the plumbing shaft and by any windows. After that, there really are no rules that will restrict the design. Your choices will be led by your personal preferences, the space available, a sense of balance, and the actual items you choose to include.

Consider who is using the bathroom, when they will be using it, and how they are using the space. Think about the layout of your existing bathrooms you have used in the past, and learn from them. Consider what was impractical or awkward about them and also what you liked about them. If more than one person uses the bathroom at the same time, is there adequate counter space, or do you need a second wash basin or a shower compartment for greater privacy? Are towel racks and tissue holders located conveniently? Is there enough storage space for everyone that uses the bathroom? Do vanity doors or drawers interfere with the opening and closing of the bathroom door? What would you really like to have in an ideal world? Also, think about the maintenance problems in your existing bathroom - stained grout, mirrors that have flaked, mould, soap build-up, etc. Some materials look great when they’re brand new, but don’t weather very well in a high-moisture location. As you choose materials, make sure they are waterproof and washable.

It’s not only the floor space available, but more increasingly today, the wall space that affects your layout. How much space do you need for storage, basin and toilet? Think about how you can maximise your wall space.

The next step is to decide on the fixtures, starting by positioning the bath or shower. Make sure there is easy access to manoeuvre if you’ll be bathing small children and need a nearby wall space for a towel rack. The bath is often placed against the back wall to keep it away from the bathroom door. The best use of space is to put the bath on the shortest wall.

Plan for at least one metre of clear space in front of the wash basin so that there’s room to bend down and get into the cabinet. If the sink is placed along a side wall near the door, make sure the door swings away from the sink, not into it. Position the toilet so that it’s obscured from direct view when standing at the door. It’s a personal preference whether to divide up the room and make the toilet separate.

With the space-saving styles available, you will definitely have room for a small storage closet. There are even cabinets that fit behind wall-hung toilets.

Your vanity cabinets will provide the bulk of the storage. There are three basic types of base cabinets - modular sink bases (drawer fronts and doors below), drawer bases (makes the most out of the space with three or four drawers), and a standard vanity base (one drawer with one door below).

Allow for heating and ventilation. Choose from underfloor heating, heat lamps, panel heaters and blow heaters. Ventilation will help eliminate fogged up windows, steamy mirrors and stale odours. Along with an open window, a ventilating fan will help prevent moisture-related problems, such as the growth of mould and mildew in winter.

Place fittings at appropriate heights for the users. If the room is used by children as well as adults, consider a shower totem or rail on which the height can be adjusted. The vanity height should also be designed to suit the user. The toilet height is often overlooked, but an ageing user will benefit from a toilet positioned higher than normal, so that bending down and the difficulty of getting up will be avoided. Wall-hung toilets also allow for easier floor cleaning.

LIGHTING

Ideally a bathroom has a lighting plan that blends four different types of light: task, ambient, accent, and decorative. You’ll need strong lighting over the mirror but you may also want to consider pinpoint task lighting and soft ambient lights.

Avoid wasting time or being disappointed by carefully measuring and determining the exact dimensions of the space where the tub will be placed before you begin shopping for a bath. Consider how you would like the bath to be installed within that area. Will it be an alcove style tub, free-standing, under-mounted, or drop-in? Will you want to leave space around the bath for a tiled ledge ?

Of all possible bath tub materials, acrylic has become the material of choice in the bathing world due to its natural warmth, ease of maintenance, resilience, and ability to be formed into soft contours. The material can be maintained with little more than regular cleanings using a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Water lines can easily be wiped off with a soft cloth. If the surface becomes scratched, it can easily be restored by light sanding using extra-fine grit wet and dry sandpaper. After years of wear, the finish on an acrylic bath can still be buffed to a high sheen—something that cannot be done on dulled enamel cast iron or fibreglass. Strong and light weight, acrylic is also more forgiving should you slip and fall. It stands up to high temperatures and ultraviolet light, resists thermal cracking, and is highly resistant to chemicals and mildew. In addition, acrylic is moderately priced and affordable.

Gel-coated fibreglass bathtubs are inexpensive, strong, light-weight, and available in various sizes and shapes, but these tubs generally don’t have long lives. The surface of fibreglass is susceptible to stains, mould, and mildew which can penetrate the surface and be difficult to remove. Gel-coated fibreglass baths have a tendency to flex, develop crazing and spider cracking, and to become chalky over time.

For those who are looking for a bathtub to be the dramatic focal point of the room, baths can be created out of genuine marble, onyx or granite. While they are definitely made for bathing, they do require specialised care, depending upon the material, to maintain their beauty.

Find a bath that is a comfortable fit for the person who will use it the most. Who is going to use this tub? She may be short, and he may be tall. She likes to lounge in the bath a few nights each week, and he only showers. Why then buy an extra long bath that fits him rather than her? Extra large baths lose

their appeal when they require too much time to fill, are not necessarily comfortable, and may not be adequately full before the water heater runs out of hot water.

Consider the height and slope of the backrest. Some models have rounding backrests that cradle the back and caress the bather. Evaluate your ability to fully extend your legs while in a relaxed, reclined position. (You may want your feet to reach the end of the tub before your head bubbles under.)

In a bathroom revamp, the replacement of the tub is a major expense. A bath that’s tiled into an alcove cannot generally be removed without tearing out at least a couple of courses of tile. If the walls of the bath surround are granite or other solid surface material, changing the tub may involve removing, and probably breaking, expensive slabs. Deck-mounted, drop-in baths are easier to replace - if one can be located with the same height, width, and depth. With all of this in mind, it’s wise to invest in a bath as a budget will permit. Many bathrooms wouldn’t need renovating if the bathtub itself were not in a state of unsanitary or unsightly disrepair.

A massage system can enhance the bathing experience, increase relaxation, and ease aching muscles and joints. There are basically two types of hydro-thermal massage systems for bathtubs - traditional jetted systems and air systems. Traditional jetted systems utilise jets and a pump that pulls in the bath water, aerates it, and sends the water back out at the bather. Visible along the sides of the bath, jets offer a direct massage to specific body areas where they are pointed.

Air systems draw in air, heat it, and inject it out through numerous air jets located all along the lower perimeter of the bath, creating millions of bubbles that vigorously agitate the water and create the massage. The air jets are small and barely visible.

Air systems automatically dry themselves after each use, assuring that no water remains in the system. In addition, they can be programmed to dry themselves daily, whether or not the tub was used. They distribute pressure equally throughout the bath to provide a full body massage – adjustable from gentle to energetic. They also allow the addition of bubble bath, essential oils, bath salts, and teas without damaging the turbine.

Shower heads fall into a few general categories. Many have some adjustable features that let you select the spray pattern and the intensity of the jets.

Single-head spray shower heads are the familiar bulbous, adjustable nozzles that feature individual nozzles that distribute the spray in patterns.

Rain showers are large, flat heads that are suspended directly above the user and direct the spray straight down.

Dual and multiple shower heads feature more than one shower head controlled by a single set of levers (or handles). A typical configuration is a fixed, wall-mounted shower head paired with a handheld counterpart. In some instances, a diverter valve allows the user to operate either shower head or both simultaneously.

Hand-held shower heads feature a single head sprayer attached to a flexible hose, good for washing hair and those hard-to-reach places. Hand-held shower heads are particularly useful for those with limited mobility, and those who might shower in a sitting position.

Shower heads, handles and valve controls are available in a variety of finishes including polished chrome, brushed chrome, polished nickel, brushed nickel, hammered nickel, stainless steel, bronze, brushed bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, polished brass, black and white. If a consistent look for your bathroom finishes is important to you, select all your bath fixtures, faucets and accessories from the same manufacturer.

Remember that polished finishes are elegant but require constant upkeep to keep them looking bright and free from spots. Brushed and matte finishes are better at hiding water spots and fingerprints.

A basic understanding of valves is key to selecting the right faucet for your needs and to understanding costs.

A mixing valve is the basic device that mixes hot and cold water. When you twist your temperature control lever to make your water hotter or colder, you’re adjusting your mixing valve.

The pressure-balance valve keeps water temperature constant by adjusting the pressure of your hot and cold water inflow (and avoids a sudden cold shower when the washing machine comes on and steals the hot water pressure). It’s also called an anti-scald valve, and it’s an especially good safety feature for small kids or the elderly. A drawback is that it maintains constant temperatures by altering pressure, so the overall flow rate of the water may fluctuate.

Anti-scald pressure-balance valves are required in new home construction. In older homes, however, installing a pressure-balance valve may invite problems - clogged and corroded pipes may reduce pressure to the point that the valve won’t do its job properly.

Thermostatic valves are a more sophisticated version of a pressure-balance valve. They maintain constant temperature but, unlike the traditional pressure-balance valve, the thermostatic version maintains constant pressure.

TOILETS

Apart from style and shape preferences, consider comfort, interactivity and water conservation when choosing a toilet.

Think about what kind of flush is preferred and whether you want amenities such as a bidet. Other considerations include budget, as well as the size and layout of the bathroom.

Two-piece toilets are the traditional models that have separate tanks and bowls, which make handling easier, especially for getting a toilet into tight spaces. The water inlet hole and the bolts used to fasten the tank to the bowl are sealed, and the seam between the two pieces is sealed with rubber gaskets. After a few years of service, the gaskets will eventually fail, causing leaks. Replacing the gaskets can be a hassle because the bolts and nuts tend to rust and “freeze”, requiring cutting.

One-piece toilets eliminate the seam between the tank and bowl. The result is a sleek design with no crevices to trap dirt. One-piece toilets tend to be more expensive than comparable two-piece models.

The round snub-nose bowl design fits smaller spaces. The pear-shaped elongated bowl has several additional inches of bowl space in the front of the toilet. It works well for people who appreciate the extra room.

Solid or partial-foot bowls refer to the part of the bowl in direct contact with the floor - some foots are small and result in an opening between the foot and the back wall. Solid-foot bowls extend all the way to the wall, meaning there’s no wiggle room for retrofits. Mismatching the foot is a frequent cause of headaches when replacing a toilet.

Rather than rest on the floor, wall-mount toilet models attach directly to a wall. The tank is concealed inside the wall cavity, resulting in more usable floor space – especially handy for tight quarters. Wall-mount toilets are popular because it’s easy to clean underneath the bowl. For retrofits, additional structural material must be added to the wall.

Toilets are the main source of a home’s water consumption, accounting for nearly 30% of all indoor water use so it’s worth considering water-efficient toilets.

High-efficiency toilets generate a powerful flush with a minimum amount of water - usually 4.8 litres per flush or less. The term can apply to any type of flushing action.

Dual-flush toilets are water-efficient models that encourage “conscious flushing” by requiring you to select either a low-water (3 to 4.5 litre per flush) flush for liquid waste, or a full-fledged 6 litre flush for solid waste.

FLOORING

Nothing looks better than ceramic or porcelain tiles, whether your tastes run to stone or wood lookalikes, or bright colours and patterns. Ceramics are fitting for those who are looking for low maintenance too, while installing underfloor heating will help increase comfort.

When protected with a high-grade glaze, ceramic will resist wear and scratches. Porcelain tiles are harder than clay-based tiles and may have through-body colour – an advantage if chipping occurs.

Made from limestone, marble, granite and slate, stone tiles are available in colours that range from creams to blues, reds, greens and golds. Available textures are nearly as numerous and include cleft, tumbled, sandblasted, etched and flamed variations. Stone requires more maintenance than ceramic tiles; regular cleaning and sealing are recommended. Plus, stone

is typically more expensive than similar-looking ceramic or porcelain tiles, although prices vary.

One of the most budget-friendly floorings available is vinyl, while it’s easy to clean, waterproof, and stain-proof. Choosing a top-quality sheet vinyl (rather than peel-and-stick tiles) will reduce seams where water can seep under. A felt or foam backing makes vinyl softer than wood or tile, which is helpful in bathrooms where slip-and-fall accidents are common on wet floors. Experienced DIYers can tackle vinyl installation, but professional help is advised for large bathrooms that will require piecing seams.

Not often thought of for the bathroom floor, bamboo is eco-friendly and also easy on the budget, costing as little as half the price of hardwood floors. In the bathroom, the smart choice is engineered bamboo (rather than solid bamboo) because the planks are extremely durable and ideal for wet environments. They are also simple to install and damaged pieces can be replaced easily.

The first step to choosing a basin is to decide who will be using it. Adults, children, guests or all three? CHOOSING A BED

Besides the fact that we spend a third of our lives in bed, sleeping on an uncomfortable one could cost us sleep. The actual cost of this is one that a lot of us unknowingly pay for. The lack of quality sleep can have a negative impact on our energy, emotional balance, and health.

When buying a bed, begin by considering the space you need at night. While you may opt for a standard double bed, a king size gives couples a lot more room to relax and stretch during sleep.

Bedsteads are more decorative and will provide a definite classic or contemporary look to the bedroom. Note that a solid slat offers less support than a bowed slat.

A headboard is a way to tie in the bed with the rest of the furniture. Fabric or leather covered headboards can bring a room warmth and elegance, while straight-lined wood or veneer can create a contemporary look. For a traditional look, a dark real wood headboard can complete the style.

Divans act as bases for mattresses and either have springs, which allow the mattress to adapt to the body’s contours, or a solid top, which provides firmer support. A divan is useful if tight on space, as most are available with drawers to provide additional storage.

Storage beds have built-in drawers that allow for more space in the bedroom.

When it comes to choosing mattresses, various elements determine their quality. Laboratory test methods have been established for these elements and include aspects such as pressure distribution, skin microclimate, hygiene, edge support, and long-term stability.

Other characteristics such as firmness are more specific to the sleeper. Though it hasn’t been proven, it’s thought that firm mattresses are recommended for stomach and some back sleepers, soft mattresses are recommended for side sleepers, and medium mattresses are recommended for the majority of back sleepers. Some brands offer mattresses with adjustable firmness levels, to accommodate sleepers who share a bed.

Once a mattress no longer feels supportive and instead seems to contribute to body pain or stiffness, it should be replaced. Symptoms of a broken or worn-out mattress also include feeling the springs poke through the upholstery layer, visible permanent sagging or deformity, lumpiness, and excessive squeaking.

There are a variety of different types of mattresses available, but the most common types are spring and foam.

CHOOSING A WARDROBE

Wardrobes are heavily reliant on bedroom space so the first thing to start with is assessing whether the room permits a freestanding, fully fitted or walk-in wardrobe.

Other important wardrobe characteristics to consider include the existing pieces of furniture in the room and the amount of storage space needed. Before starting the quest for the perfect wardrobe, take accurate measurements of the space where it’s intended to be placed. Besides measuring the width and length of the space, you should also take into account things such as doors and windows, as they may hinder the positioning of the wardrobe. Make sure enough space is allowed for the doors to open easily.

The function of a wardrobe is greatly subjective, as it depends on individual preferences and needs, as wardrobes come with different numbers of compartments. If plenty of space is needed, consider a wardrobe with a more complicated design, which allows for

storing all clothing items and accessories.The best thing about fully fitted wardrobes is that they’re extremely versatile when it comes to the use of space in a bedroom. This type of wardrobe can make the most of bedroom space, mainly because fully fitted wardrobes can be specifically designed to fit around uneven walls or odd angles. The only downside of these wardrobes is their price, as in many cases they’re more expensive than their freestanding counterparts.

When choosing a wood wardrobe, pay attention to the type of wood, but also to the finish, because this is what gives a piece of furniture a pleasant aspect. Not all types of wood look the same, so also think about the existing pieces of furniture in the bedroom before buying a wood wardrobe.

There’s more to a wardrobe’s size than practical and functional aspects, as the overall look of the bedroom can be ruined by a wardrobe that is too big or too small. Keep in mind maintaining proportions.

DON’T COPY THE SHOWROOMEven if you love a certain supplier, the bedroom needs a little source variety. A great way to avoid the showroom look is to invest in one thing in the bedroom that you really love from a higher end supplier, and then source the rest from lower end showrooms. This is a helpful way to master the art of the mix.

BE REALISTICAlthough the bedroom is somewhat limited to key furniture pieces, it is possible to get their placement wrong. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the furniture layout. Take yourself moving throughout the room (getting up in the night to go to the bathroom, dressing in the morning,

etc) to ensure that there aren’t any unforeseen, uncomfortable placements before going ahead. Also, design features which may seem fantastic to look at in the adverts, may not be practical for you. For instance, an openplan bedroom / bathroom may seem great, but consider its implications.

LIGHTINGAn overhead fixture is not your friend in the bedroom. Allowing yourself to exist in anything other than golden, layered lighting is a huge rookie mistake. A good rule of thumb is that you need at least three separate light sources in the bedroom (and the overhead fixture does not count). Vary the heights and strengths of lighting to make even basics look expertly expensive.

FORGETTING YOUR GUTWe often feel obligated to use old furniture, despite not liking it very much. Or we get talked into buying something because it’s cheap/practical/necessary, but not necessarily right for us. Did you pick a wall colour after seeing a beautiful, inspirational image, but something about it is just wrong? If something isn’t working, acknowledge it, and change it. Even if you spent time and money to get it that way, not addressing what you know isn’t working is costing you even more in energy and satisfaction with the room. Don’t get stuck in the error of your trial and error. Be bold and fix your mistakes asap to keep your momentum on track.
