Monarchy

The earliest form of government in ancient Greece was monarchy, in which one person-such as a king or emperor-had the power to make all of the political decisions.

Those of you sitting on the floor have no power.

Oligarchy

Oligarchy developed in Greece as an alternative to monarchy. In an oligarchy, a few individuals have the power to make political decisions.

Remember: those of you on the floor have no power.

Oligarchs were the wealthy members of society. Three volunteers.

Tyranny

Discontent with the oligarchy in ancient Greece led to the rise of new leaders, called tyrants.

In a tyranny, one individual seizes power by force and rules single-handedly.
