Show don’t tell: Practice describing the way a room looks. Pay attention to your five senses to help with your description. What can you see, hear, taste, touch, smell? The room was full of desks, shelves and pictures on the wall. There were cupboards full of books and paper. There was a buzz of people talking. At the front of the room a telephone rang. Outside, you could see the trees swaying and the coast. There was the low groan of air conditioning. TASK : The above piece of writing SHOWS and SUGGESTS the inside of a classroom without using key words like teacher, pupil, jotter, whiteboard and so on. Write between 50 and 100 words describing a room in your house, or a dentists’ or a hospital, or a changing room or any other interesting space. Focus on the floor, walls, ceilings, windows, colours, sounds and so on … Try and avoid words which might give it away too early.

Inverted commas (“”) are used to show speech. For example; “My name is Frank,” he said. The words inside the inverted commas are the exact words he spoke. The punctuation should be inside the inverted commas. For example; “What is your name?” 1. A paragraph is a group of sentences on one subject. When the subject changes, a new paragraph must begin. Paragraphs are identified because they are indented from the margin or a double space between each paragraph. Task 1: Rearrange the following sentences to make one interesting paragraph on a pet. When he’s ready to pounce, his eyes are as big as a 10p coin. Another reason I like him is that he has crazy eyes. One reason I like him is because he’s athletic. My favourite pet is my cat, Buckley.
