Among Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig’s Vezina Trophy-winning credentials in 1999-2000 were his five shutouts.

He recorded his final one of the sea-son on this night in Montreal, making 21 saves to blank the hot Canadiens 3-0.

Kolzig’s heroics snapped the Habs’ seven-game winning streak and also marked the Capitals’ last shutout in Montreal until 2008.

Kolzig’s impressive showing that night was part of a longer, more im-pressive stretch of quality play which was perhaps his best run of one of his finest campaigns.

From Feb. 21 to March 7, the Wash-ington netminder held opponents to two goals or fewer in nine consecu-tive contests. During that time, he put

together a performance nearly as im-pressive as his shutout of the Cana-diens when he made 52 saves in a 2-2 tie against Detroit.

Kolzig permitted 14 goals and stopped 252 of the 266 shots he faced over those nine games.

Stretches like that one were part of the reason Kolzig went on to become just the second Capital to win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goal-tender. Just four years after Jim Carey became the first Washington player to win the award, the tender affection-ately known as “Olie the Goalie” went 41-20-11 with a 2.24 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in 73 games.

Kolzig led the league in shots faced, saves and minutes played that season while setting career highs in wins and games played.

NHL trade season is well under-way and since 2004, the Washington Capitals have often been an active participant.

The league’s trade deadline looms Monday at 3 p.m. and whether the Capitals jump in again remains to be seen.

They addressed one of their biggest needs in November, acquiring veteran defensive defenseman Scott Hannan from Colorado for forward Tomas Fleis-chmann.

With Washington receiving inconsis-tent production at center behind Nick-las Backstrom, the team could be in the market for a second-line pivot before the clock strikes 3 on Monday.

Here’s a look at the Caps’ recent trade deadline history.

Last year, Washington arrived at the March 3 deadline with a league-best 90 points. Rather than stand pat, the Caps were among the busiest teams that day, making four deals. Washing-ton made two trades with Carolina, acquiring gritty forward Scott Walker for a seventh-round pick and offensive

defenseman Joe Corvo for defenseman Brian Pothier, prospect Oskar Osala and a 2011 second-round pick.

The Caps also acquired center Eric Belanger from Minnesota for a second-round pick and defenseman Milan Jurcina from Columbus for a conditional draft pick.

The moves added depth and helped Washington go on to win the Presi-dent’s Trophy as the NHL’s top regular-season team. But the Caps were elimi-nated by Montreal in the first round of the playoffs.

In 2009, Washington let the dead-line pass quietly with no moves. The Caps entered the day with 85 points, proceeded to win the Southeast Divi-sion and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost in seven games to Pittsburgh, the eventual Stanley Cup champions.

The 2008 deadline was another busy one for Washington, as the team acquired goalie Cristobal Huet from Montreal for a second-round pick, cen-ter Sergei Fedorov from Columbus for a prospect, and winger Matt Cooke from Vancouver for forward Matt Pettinger.

The Caps went into the day with 64 points and that trio helped them go 15-4 over their last 19 games to squeak into the playoffs. Huet went 11-2 with a 1.63 goals-against average in 13 games with the team that year.

During building years in 2007 and 2006, the team was a deadline seller, shipping out such players as Dainius Zubrus, Richard Zednik, Brendan Witt and Jeff Friesen.

But perhaps the Capitals’ most im-portant deadline came in 2004, the year before the lockout. That year, they traded away several high-priced veter-ans for draft picks and prospects in an overhaul which has helped make them perennial Stanley Cup contenders.

From Jan. 23 to March 9, 2004, Washington unloaded Peter Bondra, Jaromir Jagr, Robert Lang, Sergei Gon-char, Michael Nylander, Anson Carter and Mike Grier. Some of the pieces brought back in those deals were for-wards Brooks Laich and Fleischmann (since dealt for Hannan), defenseman Shaone Morrisonn, and the draft picks which turned into top blueliners Mike Green and Jeff Schultz.

Caps Week

“I can’t remember when we scored six goals in a game or seven. It was a fun game for us and a fun

game to play.” – Caps captain Alex Ovechkin on the team’s offensive outburst in Anaheim.

It’s Friday AND it’s going to be 70?! Sweet!! Almost makes the caps loss a wee bit easier to take this morning. Almost. – @CapsWench, the morning after the Capitals’

3-2 defeat at San Jose Thursday.

In 1999-2000, Olaf Kolzig became the second Capitals goalie to win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top netminder.

“It’s good to see him score because he’s a huge part of us moving forward. We’re going to need him to score a lot of goals and he’ll be a big part coming down the way.” – Caps forward Mike Knuble told the Washington Post about Alex Semin, who recorded a hat trick in the win over Anaheim.

Q: To what do you attribute your ability to get to the NHL so fast and to have instant success there?JC: I think that I’ve always been one of those guys that really tries to work on my skills all the time and I’ve been blessed with good opportuni-ties to play and great teams to play on. So I think that, along with coaching – I’ve been with some great, great coaches – and I think if you play on a good team all the time, you really learn how to win. You learn how to sacrifice and you learn from the other great players that you play with on great teams. I think that really jump-starts you as a player.

Q: With the success you’ve had, there’s been some talk that you’ll be named the league’s top rookie. How flattering has that been?JC: Just to be thought about in that category has been pretty good. There’s so many other great players and worthy opponents for me. Who knows what will happen, but I just come to the rink every day and try to help my team in whatever I can do to help, whether it’s scoring or whether it’s blocking shots, or sitting on the bench. Whatever it takes to win, I’m willing to do and I really enjoy winning. Personal success will always come with winning and if you win a Stanley Cup, you’re going to be happy if you have five points or 100 points. Q: How would you personally evaluate how your first full season in the NHL has gone?JC: I think it’s been going great. It is different. It’s different from the AHL, it’s different from the OHL.

But at the same time, it’s a dream come true really and you’ll do whatever it takes. There’s obviously going to be high points where you’re hot and there’s low points when you’re in a slump. But I’m happy that it’s a good team doing well right now and personally, I’m contributing and being a part of this team, and that’s what makes me happy.Q: Considering you’re playing 22 minutes a night and you’re nearing a career high for regular-season games played at any level, how’s your body holding up?

JC: You feel fatigue. … It’s the grind of the season. It’s so long, it’s so grueling. I think I’m holding up pretty well and I’m still enjoying my-self and, knock on wood, I’ve been healthy.

Just two years after being selected in the first round of the 2008 draft, Caps defenseman John Carlson had already worked his way to the NHL. Now in his first full season with Washington, the 21-year-old has gen-erated Calder Trophy buzz with 24 points and a plus-17 rating in his first 59 games.
