lets have led to 80 percent of U.S. streams contain small amounts of human medicines. Sewage systems cannot remove medicine from water that is released into lakes, rivers or oceans. Fish and other aquatic animals have shown adverse effects from medicines in the water. Small amounts of medicine have even been found in drinking water.

The Washington Poison Center says med-icines that are flushed or poured down the drain have been found by scientists “in sur-face, ground and marine waters as well as soils and sediments in the Pacific North-west. Even at very low levels, medicines in the environment hurt aquatic life.”

Deterra says its drug deactivation pouch “is made from environmentally sound materials. This allows for the degradation of the plastic pouch and zipper through the use of organic additives that are consumed by microbes found in landfills. The result is the release of water and carbon dioxide, with little organic biomass left behind. This greatly reduces the amount of material left in landfills.” The company adds that the drugs will be retained in the activated car-bon no matter what they are exposed to in the landfill.

In addition, the local coalition says that unused medications left in medicine cabi-nets are often taken by teens and others, leading to drug abuse problems. They cite a study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health indicating that

nearly 70 percent of opioid medications in homes with children are not stored safely, and a MetLife Foundation study saying 56 percent of teens said it’s easy to get prescrip-tion drugs from their parent’s medicine cab-inet. They also reference a National Survey of Drug Use and Health saying that 80 per-cent of all heroin users report misusing pre-scription opiates prior to illicit drug use.

“Our mission is to keep our community healthy, safe and substance abuse free,” said Ms. Dapp.

“As a new member of the SAFIR Coali-tion, we are proud to provide home health-care and hospice patients and caregivers with a safe, convenient way to properly dis-pose of unused and expired medications,” added Kathy Orton, VNA’s Vice President of Clinical Services/Chief Regulatory Offi-

cer. “SAFIR’s donation of Deterra pouches is a most appreciated resource for our patient population.”

“The results from a National Survey on Drug Use and Health revealed that nearly half of all opioid misuse starts with a friend or family member’s prescription, and it’s likely not a current prescription but one that was left over from a root canal or knee sur-gery,” said former U.S. Representative Mary Bono, who is on the Deterra Advisory Council. “It’s this diversion point, a family member’s medicine cabinet, that Deterra can help with. If everyone had a Deterra pouch and disposed of their unused medi-cations, there would be far fewer pills avail-able for people looking to abuse them.”

“The opioid epidemic is simply too big

Friday, July 13, 2018 4 Hometown News – VERO BEACH– www.HometownNewsIRC.com

TREASURE COAST — In a June 14 email to customers, Florida City Gas announced that it was being sold to NextEra Energy, the parent company of Florida Power and Light. This came as a surprise to many customers who had been more focused on FPL’s pur-chase of Vero Electric.

The sale was first announced in a news release from Southern Company, the parent of Florida City Gas.

Florida City Gas serves approximately 108,000 natural-gas customers in Miami-

Dade, Brevard, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties with 3,700 miles of natural gas pipelines.

In Martin County, Florida City Gas serves the Jensen Beach and Treasure Coast Mall areas. In St. Lucie, the company serves the Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie West areas. In Indian River, the company serves the Vero Beach area.

Also included in the sale are Gulf Power, with 450,000 customers in eight counties throughout northwest Florida, 100 percent ownership interest in Plant Oleander, a nat-ural-gas fueled, simple-cycle combustion turbine electric generation plant located near Cocoa, and 65 percent ownership

interest in Stanton Energy Center, an elec-tric generating unit near Orlando.

All together, the transaction is valued at approximately $6.475 billion, including the assumption of $1.4 billion of Gulf Power debt. FPL is already one of the nation’s larg-est electric companies and the largest utility in Florida, serving nearly five million cus-tomer accounts, or an estimated 10 million people, across half of Florida.

Florida City Gas, headquartered in Doral, began in Miami-Dade in 1946. It expanded to Brevard County in the 1960s as part of the space program. In 1988, Florida City Gas became a part of NUI Corp. and extended its natural gas distribution system into St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin and Palm Beach counties. The company became a subsidiary of the Atlanta-based AGL Resources in 2004, which became Southern Company Gas in 2016.

“As a valued customer, we want to assure you that the sale will have no impact on the safe and reliable natural gas service you have always expected from Florida City Gas,” the company said in a June 14 email to custom-ers.

The Florida City Gas transaction’s target completion is third quarter 2018. The other elements of the sale are expected to be com-pleted in the first half of 2019.

The Florida City Gas acquisition is sub-ject to the expiration or termination of the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodi-no Act of 1976, a federal antitrust law that requires large companies to file a report before completing a merger, acquisition or tender offer. The waiting period is usually 30 days. The transaction can proceed if the waiting period ends or if the government terminates the waiting period early.

“We are pleased to have reached defini-tive agreements with Southern Company to acquire Gulf Power and Florida City Gas, along with Southern Company’s Oleander and Stanton facilities,” said Jim Robo, chair-man and chief executive officer of FPL par-ent NextEra Energy. “These transactions will provide meaningful benefits for the state of Florida, and Gulf Power and Florida City Gas customers, as well as NextEra Energy shareholders.”

NextEra is headquartered in Juno Beach.

What’s with the lawn ornaments?

Why do folks own boats, trailed and stored in their yards, that never seem to get any use? At least one house in Port St. Lucie has no less than four trailed boats stored on this residential property. These unused boats are just some sort of lawn trophy - “Hey, I am so rich and wasteful, I own a boat I never use.” If the boat hasn’t touched water in a year, sell it to someone who wants use it and not just own it.

Stop fighting BrightlineIt seems fighting against Brightline has

had another side effect for the Treasure Coast, not only will we not be getting a train station here to slow it down on its way to Orlando and Disney to connect a metropol-itan area of 6 million with a metro area of 3 million, now we won’t be silencing our horns any time soon the way cities to our South are about to. According to the Palm Beach newspaper’s May 10th headlines, Brightline’s upgrades are about to silence train horns on FCC tracks in six out of seven cities beginning really soon.  Anybody liv-ing within a mile of the tracks knows the nightly assault on the ears hearing those horns blaring in the silence of the night at two, three and four o’clock in the morning. Many must be regretting the decision to fight against the trains coming by here and the silencing of the horns that would have brought us. Now as these trains approach, they’ll keep mercilessly blaring their horns as hard as they possibly could during the wee hours of the morning just remind us of our stupidity and the transfer of wealth to the lawyers’ pockets fighting this losing war. You ain’t stopping this train, sorry, ain’t going to happen. Fight for a train station instead.

Help to reduce panic

We can reduce the panic spread by the Chicken Little local news as weather per-sons during hurricane season. We need a website that, when you enter your zip code and a hurricane is near, will give you the winds expected in that zip code in the next 24, 36, and 48 hours. That way, the panic about high winds can be narrowed to a small area instead of wide spread panic.

Vote no!Vote No to Incorporate. I have been com-

ing to Hobe Sound for forty years and it has not changed much over time. Yes, there are more homes and the shopping centers at Bridge Road and US 1 but the quaintness of Hobe Sound is still here. What are the pro-ponents of incorporation going to save us from? Martin County has been doing a good job preserving Hobe Sound. In my opinion there are hidden agendas with the people pushing for incorporation. Taxes will go up to pay for an additional layer of Govern-ment that is not needed. Remember the old saying “If it isn’t broken don’t fix it”

Be kind to iguanas

It’s important to remember that animals like the iguanas and boa constrictors “invading” Florida were once “pets,” dumped when the novelty wore off. They are here through no fault of their own and should be dealt with humanely. Startling people and eating plants surely shouldn’t be cause for a death sentence.

In general, iguanas want to stay away from you as much as you want to stay away from them. Make your property unappeal-

ing to iguanas. There are many plants and ornamentals that iguanas do not eat. If you have fruit trees, don’t let dropped fruit stay on the ground. Seal holes, cracks in the walls and floors, and spaces around doors, win-dows, and plumbing. Make sure your screens are secure and undamaged. Keep brushy areas where iguanas like to nest to a minimum. Hang cheap CDs as wind chimes from trees or prized plants (the reflective surfaces often scare iguanas away). Nonle-thal deterrent sprays are available at hard-ware stores. Living in harmony with free-roaming iguanas is possible without having to bash their skulls in.

Walking dogsLet’s be honest, people walk their dogs so

they can relieve themselves on other peo-ple’s property. Some walking the dog at night, unleashed, so they don’t have to both-er to clean up and some are doing it in day-

time too. Confronted, they get feisty and try to make you the “bad” person on top of it. I could easily do without this kind of neigh-bors.

Just a few thingsFirst I wish to thank the Vietnam Veter-

ans of St. Lucie County for the Military Appreciation Game for ALL veterans. But while at the game, I witnessed a grown man grab a baseball that three children were chasing. Instead of giving it to one of the kids, he held his “trophy’” up as if he’d done something special. Taking candy from a baby? Shame!!

And also shame on the City of Fort Pierce for putting money above locally owned businesses. The Tiki Bar will no longer be locally owned, and I will no longer give them my business. There are too many locally owned businesses that will appreciate it more.

A membership for a city resident family (2-8 people) will increase from $255 to $325.

A monthly city resident membership for a single adult will rise from $25 to $75. For a family, the monthly membership will rise from $40 to $120.

Non-city resident rates will be substan-tially higher.

At the Recreation Commission meeting where these new rates were approved, Rec-reation Director Rob Slezak said that the goal is to provide recreation for all those who may not be able to afford it. Mr. Slezak said he is trying to strike a balance with rais-ing the rates to bring in more revenue, but still continuing to provide for those who are struggling financially.

Commission member Bobbi Burdick asked if the new rates will bring the pro-grams closer to being in the black. Mr. Slezak replied there was a chance, but the immediate priority was to help offset the costs. Mr. Slezak said that if he doubles the current rates, then they will be at a breakev-

en point.Commission member Sue Dinenno asked

if the county operates their Recreation Department with a profit. Mr. Slezak replied that they do not. He explained the general expectation across the country is that recre-ation departments will not generate income.

As the commission recommended the increases, it also unanimously approved Chairman Richard Yemm’s motion to add the word “affordable” to the Recreation Department’s mission statement.

In the City Council resolution to raise the rates that will be discussed at the July 17 public hearing, the council states “while striving to achieve its primary mission of service to the public, the Recreation Depart-ment also endeavors to establish rates for user and participant fees that have a direct relationship to the cost of each program and operation of the various facilities and yet do not unreasonably hinder wide public partic-ipation.”

The City Council’s public hearing will be held on July 17 at 3 p.m. To read the specific programs and fees that are slated to rise Jan. 1, visit https://www.covb.org/DocumentCen-ter/View/1102/6-B.

for one solution,” said William Alden, Chairman of the Board of the DEA Educa-tional Foundation. “It’s going to take every-one working together in whatever way they can to finally turn the tide on opioid abuse. I wanted to work with Deterra because this is one of the things that gives individuals the opportunity to be a part of preventing abuse. If you have unused drugs in your house and

you think you don’t know anyone struggling with abuse, you think no one is going to help themselves, you have not been watch-ing the news. Get a Deterra pouch and clean out your medicine cabinet yesterday.”
