Hometown Hockey visits Snuneymuxw

On February 23rd, 2017, Tara Slone and Ron MacLean from Roger’s Hometown Hockey visited Snuneymuxw Territory which in-

cluded Tara and the entire Rogers Broadcast Crew embarking on a memorable trip to Saysutshun - Newcastle Island.

Tara was welcomed by a Snuneymuxw Welcome Ceremony & Feast. The day began with the Welcome Ceremony beginning at

Maffeo Sutton dock and proceeded with Tara travelling to Saysutshun in a sea-going canoe. Upon arriving to Saysutshun, Tara

was ushered with a welcome song to the Saysutshun Pavilion where the Snuneymuxw Dance Group shared a traditional perfor-

mance. A Snuneymuxw Artisan Village was set up and included many Snuneymuxw Artists sharing their art with everyone in

attendance. Thank you to the 10 + Snuneymuxw Artisans who participated to showcase their remarkable work! Thank you to our

fabulous Chef Amanda Seward and volunteers!

Noel, a locally-renowned carver, had been commissioned to carve a totem (4-5 feet tall) and was carving this totem at the Artisan

Village with Tara Slone. The Snuneymuxw totem pole was gifted to Tara, Ron and the entire Rogers Broadcast team.

Ron MacLean, noted broadcaster from Roger's Hometown Hockey, commented, “Thank you so much to Chief Wesley, SFN Coun-

cil and Stephanie White for performing a welcome dance for us

yesterday. I am enormously invested in the story of our history,

and the remarkable comeback you and other First Nations are

making, to the teaching, the respect for treaties and mutual

sharing of the land. Just so important. I know Tara was thrilled,

and she is a tremendous voice in this process. We will tell your

story. Thank you all SFN members and guests that participated

and attended this special event.”

QQS also attended the John Barsby Community School for the

Hometown Hockey event there with mascots and friends.

NEWS Sayshutsun - Newcastle Island Newcastle Island Ferry Service Ltd. is excited to announce that in January 2017 Snuneymuxw First Nation purchased the

Grey Selkie ship from Victoria Harbour Ferry Co. Ltd. Purchasing the Grey Selkie ship is a fundamental building block for

Snuneymuxw to provide access and transportation to Newcastle Island while strengthening the Snuneymuxw economy.

NCI Ferry Service Ltd. is beneficially owned by Snuneymuxw First Nation and is responsible for NCI management and devel-

opment.

Through a good faith and vibrant partnership, the Waterfront Suites and Marina worked with Erralyn Thomas, who is the

president of NCI Ferry Service Ltd., over a few months to make this goal a reality. Ms. Thomas shares “we are committed to

continue to achieve results in the Snuneymuxw Corporate Strategic Plan, strengthen the Snuneymuxw economy, create

jobs for Snuneymuxw membership and build our Snuneymuxw Community”. "We are thrilled to be part of the Newcastle

Island Ferry Service,” said Odai Sirri, Director of Operations for Waterfront Suites and Marina. “This is a major milestone for

Snuneymuxw First Nation and the Nanaimo community and we are honoured to be part of this important initiative," he

Herring Roe on Kelp/Bough SFN members planning on harvesting Roe within our territory are urged to mark your

bough/trees clearly on your buoy with your name and phone number, so there will be

no confusion on whose gear it is.

Please let Snuneymuxw Fisheries Department know either by nautical location or land-

marks where you will be setting your gear to ensure the Commercial herring fleet stay

clear of any beach where Snuneymuxw fishermen are harvesting.

Welcome Lisa Hanuse to the Health Centre

My name is Lisa Hanuse. My Kwakwala name is Yakakwilas from the Alert Bay Namgis & Musgamagw Tsawataineuk Territory of the

Kwakwaki’wakw people. Working in community has allowed me to enrich our culture, family, identity and teachings of our Ancestors. I

am deeply honored to have been chosen to empower the Snuneymuxw First Nation Youth “Addictions Outreach Support Worker” with

teachings, tools and support to guide them through the Inter-generational pain with Outreach work. I have Addictions training and

worked as a Counsellor in a Treatment Center. I’ve acquired education at VIU with presently attaining the Child & Youth Care Degree. I

carry gifts of sensitivity and compassion for our First Nations Community. The history and the theories are utilized to enrich the teach-

ings I have through my own self-care in health and wellness. My future goals are to complete my Child & Youth Care Degree in Addic-

tions and to facilitate Workshops in Health & Wellness for the communities.

I believe “Reconciliation” means to reconcile with “self” and “other” through past

and future traumas of ourselves and ancestral pain. I feel reconciliation is a process

to support others in their process and foremost taking care of self. I feel the fight is

over and we need to teach others how to be one with each other’s by working to-

gether through “Reconciliation” with gaining skills, cultural teachings, and care and

understanding for “Our future” – “Our Children”.

Social Development Spring Updates

Free gym passes are available! Just sign your name under the Social Development clientele sign-

in sheet at the Admin office reception. Your children are welcome to attend according to the

age requirement for the gym.

Annual reviews are due for all SA clients. Social Development needs new bank statements, BC

Hydro, application consents, and taxes when complete.

Please pick up your T5 slips if you haven’t already done so.

Drop-in for clients is Mondays and Thursdays.

Wednesdays are for appointments only.

No clients are seen on Fridays.

Please note that if Social Development doesn’t have current Hydro bills, AANDC (INAC) will not

accept our payment and claw back this money. We need current Hydro bills every month.

Once again, per capita land claims will not affect any SA clients income assistance cheques. This

was effective Oct. 1, 2016 when AANDC (INAC) approved their policy on distributions.

Energy Audits

Last year SFN completed an Energy Plan and applied for funding to cover the cost of Energy Audits

for every reservation home. These Energy Audits are tools to help plan for better energy efficiency.

home audit. We are now offering 3 incentive prizes. If you have already completed your Audit, your

name will be included in the Draw for a chance to win one of 3 - $500 Woodgrove gift cards.

Notice of Demolition Work on IR #3 Work has begun this week on the demolition of the remaining concrete structures from the former coal mine on IR #3. Several of these structures currently create a significant public safety concern.

The work will include breaking up the old concrete structures and crushing it to a size suitable for use onsite to backfill the holes remaining after the demolition.

This work will be ongoing for approximately four (4) weeks, and is scheduled to be complete by mid-April.

The work will be supervised by Golder Associates with equipment supplied by Cop Can Con-struction Ltd.

Every effort will be made to minimize disruption to residents in the area.

Notice of Tree Trimming on IR #4 – Longhouse Road Tree trimming will begin possibly this week by B.C. Hydro and will take place over the next two weeks on Longhouse Road. The tree trimming crew will trim along the road to where you just start to turn the cor-ner and see the community kitchen and is to remove the pole in the middle of the road and transfer the lines accordingly. Notice of Sewer Line Connections on IR #4 We are excited to announce that the sewer line connections have begun at IR#4. Sewer lines will become connected from the main sewer line from the road to where your plumbing connects to your septic tank. The Septic Tanks will be decommissioned and the area that will be disturbed will be brought back to the current condition or better. Your plumbing (toilets, shower/bath, sinks) will not be able to be used during the changeover in the system. HELISET HALE 2017

A relay run for suicide prevention across Vancouver Island

Sept 10th – 24nd, 2017

HELISET HALE was first held in 2013, as runners completed a run along Vancouver Island. It was a means of rais-

ing awareness of Suicide Prevention and Mental Health and Wellness.

It has now become an annual relay which will happen every September along Vancouver Island. HELISET HALE's

name originates from the SENCOTEN Coast Salish language. Directly translated HELI means “Life” HELISET means

“let life survive within you” and HALE means your speaking to a group of people. More easily translated into

English is “Awaken life within”

Join the HELISET HALE Relay team on their 3nd journey along the island Sept 10th-24th 2017. The team will be

visiting First Nation communities and schools to share their personal stories and presentation.

HELISET HALE is now accepting applications for September 2017 for the following positions: Runners, Drivers,

Cooks, Media/PR, and Road Crew.

Requirements and Commitment for Runners:

• 19+ years or High School Graduate

• First Nation, Inuit, and or Metis Ancestry

• Physically fit and Excellent over Health (capable of running 15km a day minimum)
