    Since 1989 Guangdong has topped thetotal GDP rankings among all provin-cial-level divisions. The province con-tributes approximately 12% of the PRC'snational economic output, and is hometo the production facilities and ofces

    of a wide-ranging set of multinationaland Chinese corporations. Guangdongalso hosts the largest Import and ExportFair in China called the Canton Fair inGuangdong's capital city Guangzhou.The province is now one of the richestin the nation, with the most billionairesin mainland China,[12] the highest GDPamong all the provinces, although wagegrowth has only recently begun to r isedue to a large inux of migrant workersfrom neighboring provinces.

    Geography

    Guangdong faces the South China Seato the south and has a total of 4,300 kmof coastline. Leizhou Peninsula is on thesouthwestern end of the province. Thereare a few inactive volcanoes on LeizhouPeninsula. The Pearl River Delta is the

    convergent point of three upstreamrivers: the East River,North River, and

    West River. The river delta is lled withhundreds of small islands. The provinceis geographically separated from thenorth by a few mountain ranges col-lectively called the Southern MountainRange. The highest peak in the provinceis Shikengkong 1,902 meters above sealevel. Guangdong borders Fujian prov-ince to the northeast, Jiangxi and Hunanprovinces to the north, Guangxi auton-omous region to the west, and Hong

    Kong and Macau Special AdministrativeRegions to the south.

    Culture

    Yue Chinese, broadly Cantonese, is itsown language, with 70 million speakers.It consists of many closely related dia-lects native to areas of Guangdong andGuangxi. The pronunciation and vocab-ulary of Cantonese has also preserved

    many features of the ofcial language ofthe Tang dynasty with elements of an-cient Yue language. The central region,

    which is also the political and economiccenter, is populated predominantly byCantonese speakers, though the inuxin the last three decades of millions ofMandarin-speaking immigrants hasdiminished Cantonese linguistic domi-nance somewhat. This region is associ-ated with Cantonese cuisine. Cantoneseopera is a form of Chinese opera popularin Cantonese speaking areas. Related
