Catawba Science Center offers hands-on learning and interactive exhibits that explore physical, natural, and earth sciences.
Homeschool classes offer enriching science opportunities for preschool through high school learners in chemistry, biology, environmental science, physics, astronomy, and more! Classes are designed to be hands-on, as well as age and science content appropriate.

Registration Information
Preschool – High School Classes
WHEN:Pre-K – 8th Grade: Choose the Tuesday or Wednesday in the third week of each month.High School: Wednesdays in the third week of each month (if needed, Tuesday class will be added).
CLASS TIME:1:00 to 2:30 PM
CHECK-IN:10 minutes prior to class time in the West Education Building lobby (adjacent to the main Arts and Science Center Building). All classes are held in the West Education Building.
SIGN OUT:To ensure student safety, we require that parents go to individual classrooms and sign out their children.
COST:Preschool – 8th Grade:• CSC Members: $15 per class ($120 entire year)• Non-members: $25 per class ($200 entire year)
High School:• CSC Members: $20 per class• Non-members: $30 per class

Registration & Refunds
Payment and registration forms are required to reserve your child’s space. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you need to cancel a registration, you must do so at least two weeks prior to the class date in order to receive a refund, minus an administrative fee of $5.
Please note, CSC reserves the right to cancel a class (and issue full refunds) if minimum enrollment is not met.
If you sign up for the year, refunds will not be paid for missed programs, unless they are canceled by CSC.
An optional payment plan will allow for installments to be paid throughout the year. $40 (+membership, if applicable) must be paid at time of registration. Call (828) 322-8169 and press 0 for office for details.

• Each month focuses on a different art process/technique, utilizing exhi-bitions while teaching a broad-based knowledge of art fundamentals

Science Class DescriptionsPre-K – Kindergarten
September 11-12: Sink or Float Learn what makes some objects sink - and why others float. Use a ball of clay to make a boat that floats and see raisins “bobbing” in a cup.
October 16-17: Soil, Rocks and Minerals Explore and identify objects that are made from animals, plants or rocks. Examine clay, sand and silt. “Mine” for gems to take home and start a rock collection.
November 13-14: Sensational Senses Smell, see, hear, touch, and taste! Use all of your senses in this fun-filled class.
December 11-12: Stuck on You Find out what will stick to a magnet and why. Make a magnet discovery bottle.
January 15-16: Drip, Drip, Hop, Hop Come find out who lives in a rainforest. Make a tree frog and listen to the sounds of the rainforest.
February 12-13: My Beating Heart Listen to your heart with a real stethoscope, make your own squishy heart and see how blood pumps through your body.
March 12-13: Move On Investigate forces – make things roll, bounce, slide, and fly while learning the science of motion.
April 16-17: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Learn ways you can help conserve energy and reduce pollution! Participate in an Earth awareness scavenger hunt.
May 14-15: Bug-o-rama Grab a magnifier and check out insects and spiders. Make a model of metamorphosis, and see butterflies up close!
1st – 3rd Grade
September 11-12: Hair-raising ScienceExperiment with magnets and electricity. Construct a circuit, watch a pickle glow, and have some “hair-raising” fun with balloons and a Van de Graaff generator.
October 16-17: Going Batty Bats aren’t scary! Participate in fun activities centered on Janell Cannon’s Stellaluna.
November 13-14: It’s a Gas Investigate the properties of gases. Learn about air pressure, the forces of flight, and more.
December 11-12: Star Stories Learn about the winter night sky in the Millholland Planetarium, including a viewing of Legends of the Night Sky - Orion.
January 15-16: Snow, Snow, Snow Enjoy some “cool” science experiments and demonstrations! Make a snow storm in a test tube and make your own snow to take home.
February 12-13: Slithery Snakes Participate in fun activities centered on Janell Cannon’s Verdi. Meet a couple of CSC’s scaly inhabitants.
March 12-13: Sound Science Make some noise while investigating pitch and volume. Play a unique musical instrument without touching it!
April 16-17: What’s the Buzz?Enter the fascinating world of honeybees! Examine an observation hive and look for the queen bee. Learn how to communicate like bees to find the best nectar.
May 14-15: Water Works Bubble over with fun as you experiment with water! You will get wet; you may get soaked!
4th – 6th Grade
September 11-12: Move It Experience how playing with toys can help you make discoveries about Newton’s laws of motion and other physics forces. October 16-17: Seed & Soil Science Dig into dirt! Use science tools to examine plants and seeds and sift through soils to learn about what’s under your feet. Participants will be driven in CSC vehicles to a local park; parents must sign permission slip day
of class.
November 13-14: Volts and Jolts Have hair-raising fun with a Van de Graaff generator! Make a game board to take home.
December 11-12: Amphibian Misfortunes Solve the mystery of mutating frogs in this class that combines genetics, ecology, and math.
January 15-16: Winter Constellations Become an expert on your night sky! Make a planisphere and use it in the Millholland Planetarium. View the feature Legends of the Night Sky – Orion.
February 12-13: Dive Right In Does a clam have a foot? Does a sea star have a mouth? Find out in this dissection class for junior marine biologists. (Additional $4 materials charge)
March 12-13: Weather Watchers Discover the tools that help us measure and predict weather! Learn to forecast for your family.
April 16-17: Talkin’ Trash Learn about the impact of trash on our earth and oceans and how YOU can help. Do some fun experiments using recycled materials.
May 14-15: BugologyObserve all things creepy crawly to learn about insects, arachnids, metamorphosis and more.

Science Class Descriptions7th – 8th Grade
September 11-12: The Pressure’s On It’s everywhere but you don’t see it or feel it! Discover how air pressure affects the world around us and learn some fun air pressure tricks.
October 16-17: Fragrant ChemistryDelve into the science of odors through olfactory experimentation. Visit CSC’s featured Making Scents exhibit.
November 13-14: Vet School Want to be a veterinarian? Test your diagnostic skills by “reading” animal x-rays. Learn to use a syringe and how to suture!
December 11-12: Something’s Fishy Dissect a perch and investigate their unique anatomy. Discover what keeps them afloat and get a microscopic view of scales.
January 15-16: Written in Bone Enter the world of forensic anthropology and discover what bones can tell us.
February 12-13: Rocks Rock Investigate the structure of the earth to see how interactions of constructive and destructive forces have changed the Earth’s surface. Learn about the rock types.
March 12-13: Hydromania Assess the water quality of a local stream through hands-on testing. Learn what macro-invertebrates can tell us about the health of the stream.
April 16-17: Poly…what? Find out what polymers are and perform amazing experiments to discover how they’re used in everyday life.
May 14-15: Don’t Be Jumpy! Don’t Be Jumpy! - Explore the anatomy of a preserved frog, inside and out. (Additional $3 materials charge)
High School – Physical Science/Astronomy September 12: The Properties of Waves Explore the properties of light through the use of lenses and mirrors. Discover properties of sound waves through hands-on experiments.
October 17: Is Anything Really “COLD”? Develop an understanding of heat energy and its transfer, including the insulating properties of several common substances. Study the connection between heat and the kinetic energy of atoms.
November 14: It’s Electrifying Construct different types of electrical circuits and learn the significance of Ohm’s Law.
December 12: It’s a Matter of Density Develop an understanding of how matter can be described in terms of density. Can liquids be denser than solids? Make a density column.
January 16: Going Around in Circles Explore motion from beginning to end: why it starts, why it stops, and what happens when we spin.
February 13: Universal Science An introduction to space science including the light spectrum, black holes, astronomical measurement, and galaxy formation.
March 13: Great Balls of Fire Discover the differences between our solar system’s non-planetary bodies: comets, meteors, and asteroids. Make models and explore their properties.
April 17: The Sun - Our Stellar Sea Learn about our sun, the forces that hold it together, its formation, life cycle, and processes. Discover how the sun’s magnetic storms impact planet earth.
May 15: Planetary Objects Explore the members of our solar system, their structure, their similarities and differences, and how they can impact one another.
