of stability and wellbeing that comes from homeownership and its offshoot benefits.
For instance, Habitat partner families recorded a much healthier and happier lifestyle than the control group, including lower incidences of smoking, higher levels of physical activity, greater engagement in the community and a more promising educational outlook with fewer children dropping out of school.
The work of Habitat for Humanity is a benefit to society building quality low-cost homes by using donated materials, volunteer labour and providing families with mortgages that has tremendous social and economic impact on the GTA.

Audit by
A recent study from Habitat for Humanity Canada and conducted by The Boston Consulting Group has shown the huge impact that homeownership has on individuals and society as a whole.Habitat for Humanity has tackled the issue of poverty for over
30 years by enabling families to access homeownership through their affordable homebuilding programs and working with partner families to help break the cycle of poverty.
The study focused on Habitats work with families in Canada; 200 partner families were surveyed and their answers were compared to 330 responses from a control group of people living in rental housing.
You can read more about the survey in Mark McLeans column inside this magazine. McLean, the president of the Toronto Real
Estate Board, is certainly proud of his organizations partnership with Habitat for Humanity, as well he should be.
Of course, for those of us who already own a home or condo, we know instinctively the benefits of having a safe and secure place to rest our heads every night. This study, however, strongly demonstrates the feeling

The annual Sun-Brite Drapery Christmas lunch was held in December so that owners Steve Scaini and Benny Caringi could show their appreciation to their many and varied customers.
Sun-Brite Drapery holds this much-anticipated full-blown Italian feast every year as a way to thank their customers and friends and give everyone an enjoyable afternoon of mixing and mingling before the holidays.n SunBriteDrapery.com

SUN-BRITE SHINES A LIGHT ON THEIR CUSTOMERS
and Marty Davis, CEO of Cambria, Hawkins take is a mandolin-laced game. His voice is rich with experience and delivers the story of the Nativity with gentle amazement.
Beyond the legendary status of The Hawk himself, the production credits on this single involve a pantheon of icons and rockers. With Lightfoot as co-producer, The Weber Brothers as backing band and James McKenty as engineer, Christmas Must Be Tonight reminds us that our legends are still with us, working, recording and celebrating together.
Davis, owner of Cambria, a proud family-owned producer of natural quartz surfaces, is also a great aficionado of The Band. Davis identified the 1977 version of Christmas Must Be Tonight, written by Robertson, as a song that Hawkins should think about.
The song is available on iTunes and streaming partners in North America.n CambriaCanada.com
Ronnie Hawkins and Gordon Lightfoot with Linda Leatherdale of Cambria.
Ronnie Hawkins, legendary rock n roller and kingpin of an era in which some of our greatest musical heroes came of age, is back. In December, Hawkins released his first new material in almost 15 years, a quiet reverential take on Robbie Robertsons Christmas Must Be Tonight.
The new material was introduced to the public at an event at The Cambria Gallery in December.
Produced by Gordon Lightfoot

DRHBA RAISES A GLASS TO NEW PRESIDENT
Heidi Stephenson was celebrated as the 62nd president of the Durham Region Home Builders Association (DRHBA) at a gala event in November.
I am so honoured, said Stephenson as she addressed the full room at Deer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility in Ajax. Durham Region is the best place to live, grow and play, said Stephenson, who works as a controller at Halminen Homes.
Stephenson thanked the previous president, Victor Fiume for his dedication and admirable service as president.
Fiume awarded Marianne Tracey the Presidential Star Award for her decades-long commitment to the board and for chairing the golf tournament committee.n DRHBA.com

BRANTHAVEN HOMES DECORATES YWCA FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Branthaven Homes team brought in a stylist, a local artist and a team of volunteers who treated the women of the YWCA on McNab St. in Hamilton to a wonderful day of holiday-inspired treats and festivities in December, capping it off with a craft and a tree-lighting ceremony.
Women living at the YWCA often have nowhere to go during the holidays. Having struggled with homelessness, addiction, mental illness and violence, the few possessions they carry with them are everything they own.
When Branthaven began brainstorming about initiatives in which we could participate during this holiday season, the women of the YWCA immediately came to mind, said Kristen Bellamy, marketing manager at Branthaven.
Earlier this year, Branthaven Homes renovated all 65 transitional housing units at the YWCA Hamilton. After watching a TV segment on the Ys transitional living program and finding the rooms bleak, Steve Stipsits, Branthavens president, was motivated to champion the $400,000 rejuvenation.n Branthaven.comn YWCAHamilton.org
Caesarstone Canada, the quartz surface leader, celebrated five years of impressive growth and performance in the Canadian manufacturing and surface industry in December. In 2010, Caesarstone Canada became the sole distributor of Caesarstone
quartz slabs in the Canadian market, providing sales and distribution points across all provinces from coast to coast.
Since then, the company has gained new ground in the surface marketplace, launching dozens of unique and innovative designs, collaborating with world-renowned designers like Nendo, Philippe Malouin and Tom Dixon, and executing savvy marketing campaigns directed at both consumers and trade.
This milestone is a testament to Caesarstones commitment to providing both consumers and trade partners with the most innovative surface products, backed by the best service in the industry, said Dan Clifford, president of Caesarstone Canada.n Caesarstone.ca

For designers, homes are like a canvas that they use to express their endless creativity. Compiling new trends and timeless classics,
every year we get to see new and exciting ways to make our homes more beautiful than ever. Joelle Stewart has been the Senior Interior Designer
at Guidelines Advertising for nearly 20 years. During that time she has created many signature looks for Fieldgate Homes that have helped us earn our reputation for having some of the most stylish homes in the GTA. We sat down with Joelle to get her top list of design trends for this coming year.
EXPECT MORE GEOMETRIC TILES
Tiles are now available in an ever increasing range of geometric shapes, and many have been designed so that a larger pattern emerges when theyve all been installed. Expect to see an increasing number of hexagonal and triangular shaped tiles popping
up in stylish homes this year.
ARTISANAL IS IN
There is a growing movement to source hand crafted goods that have either been made locally or coming from around the globe. Natural textures and fabrics such as crochet, basketry, Turkish towels, hand
made ceramics and Moroccan rugs are all gaining in popularity. Budget conscious homeowners can mix in a few key artisanal pieces with some stylish mass produced items for a more affordable approach to
implementing this design trend.

DESIGN TRENDS 2016 ...07
A LIGHTER SHADE OF GREIGEGreige is the new grey. This is a light grey with an undertone of warm beige that
is the perfect neutral tone.
SIMPLY WHITEBenjamin Moore chose SIMPLY WHITE OC-117 as its colour of the year for 2016.
It is a clean, honest colour that can add real elegance to your home.
EXPECT TO HEAR MORE FROM BLUE ECHOBlue Echo AF-505 is another colour forecast to be big this year. This sophisticated
and smoky, warm blue is the perfect colour for any accent wall.
TOP COLOURS of 2016
A MIXTURE OF MATERIALS
Gold has been a really popular metal in recent years. This trend is likely to continue, but were also seeing a mix of warmer gold tones, such as antique brass, copper and rose gold in furniture
pieces, light fixtures and plumbing fixtures.
MORE PATTERNS & TEXTURES INSPIRED BY NATURE
We can expect to see more naturalistic flourishes in trendy design for the foreseeable future. Florals, tropical prints and even animal skins are increasingly being used to bring a bold and
upmarket emphasis to interiors.

WINTER PROOF YOUR HOMEFor Big SavingsWinter is here again, and as the thermostat goes down outside, we turn it up inside to keep nice and cozy all winter long. Unfortunately the average homeowner overspends significantly on winter energy bills because they havent followed these simple tips to make their homes more efficient.
Try them today for huge savings.
Keep Warm This Winter & Save!
GET A HUMIDIFIERHumid air tends to feel warmer than dry air of the same temperature, this means that you can keep your thermostat a few degrees lower and save money on energy bills all winter long.
SEAL ALL LEAKSLook for cracks around windows, exterior vents and doorways. Sealing all leaks can save you over 10% a year on your heating bills.
SPRUCE UP YOUR HEATING SYSTEMBy re-sealing all duct work and tuning up your furnace, you can save as much as 13% on your heating bills. You can get even more savings by replacing your filters every 3 months and doing duct cleaning annually.
GET INTO INSULATIONMost attics in older homes are under-insulated. If you take the time to add an additional layer, you can save up to 30% on your year round energy bills. All it costs you is the relatively low price of some added insulation.

Quiet winter weekends provide the perfect opportunity to spend some real quality time with your family. But you dont need to stick to the standard movie nights, theres lots of ways to get really creative and try something different with your family this weekend.

BACKYARD CAMPFIRES
In this classic tag variation, the person who is it must throw a
snowball and hit another player to tag them.
Make sure not to throw too hard!
You can make some amazing snow art with a little bit of food colouring and a lot of creativity. Use different food colourings to either draw right on
the ground, or build your own snow sculpture and use the food colouring to
decorate it.
You dont need to go far to enjoy a winter campfire. If you have a backyard fireplace this is a great
way to enjoy the outdoors on a chilly Sunday
afternoon. You can even roast marshmallows and enjoy some hot cocoa!

5 Tips on Preparing for Your Dcor Appointment
TOUR THE MODELSWhen deciding on the look thats right for your home, we recommend that you visit the model homes in your community to get a real feel for what is possible. Take note of what you like and take plenty of pictures so you can show your dcor consultant at your appointment.
TAKE INSPIRATION FROM MAGAZINESThere are lots of great dcor magazines out on the market that are just full of wonderful ideas to customize the look and feel of your new home. Take a careful look through a few of your favourite magazines and make sure to highlight everything you like. Then, cut out your favourite images and bring them along to the appointment.
DO A TRIAL RUNThe Fieldgate Dcor Centre has so much to explore that it can be a little overwhelming the first time through. We recommend visiting the Dcor Centre one or two times before your appointment to explore samples at your own pace and make sure that you see everything in a relaxed atmosphere. You can visit the Dcor Centre without an appointment Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm. Call 416-227-2220 ext. 399 for more information.

BROOKFIELD RESIDENTIAL
Celebrating 60 years building the best places to call home
editors choice
Brookfield Residential was founded in 1956 with the dream of creating high quality residences that make life better for Canadian families. Now in 2016, Brookfield is proud to be celebrating its 60th anniversary as a premier homebuilder in Ontario. Today, Brookfield is continuing its legacy of creating The Best Places to Call Home with a new generation visionary family communities.
The heart and soul of Brookfield has always been their award-winning single family homes and communities, but that is just one dimension of their current day operations. Brookfield is a leading land developer and homebuilder involved in numerous infill projects, mixed-use developments, infrastructure projects and joint ventures across some of the most sought-after new home communities in the Greater Toronto Area and Greater Golden Horseshoe.
Over the past 60 years, Brookfield Residential has built a reputation as an industry leader and innovator, continuously striving to improve all aspects of their business from building
practices to customer experience. They employ the highest possible standards in the construction of their homes. This is the core element which helped them to continually craft distinctive, exceptional lifestyle communities across Ontario for six decades.
Brookfield also strives to improve the sustainability of their homes for the benefit of both the families that live in them, and the planet, resulting in a cleaner, healthier indoor environment for homeowners and their families. Brookfield has taken a leadership role in the industry by creating the specialized Brookfield Sustainability Committee. This talented group is dedicated to improving water and energy conservation, reducing construction waste and more.
At the core of Brookfields continued success is the companys deep commitment to listening to and reflecting the deepest needs and desires of their customers.
The longevity of our company is a true testament to the commitment of many, and the collective effort to continue to meet and exceed the
expectations of our homeowners, says Marc Thibault, vice president of sales and marketing at Brookfield Residential. Expectations can change over time and it is our responsibility as a homebuilder to continue to listen to the market and respond to them in a proactive manner.
Indeed, exceptional customer experience is the benchmark of Brookfields success as they strive to ensure their homeowners have complete peace of mind throughout the home purchasing and construction process.
Their award-winning Customer Care Team is dedicated to guiding homebuyers from start to finish, providing much needed advice and information on everything from interior design, to construction timelines and beyond.
Since 1956, Brookfield Residential has been honoured with several industry recognitions as a result of their continued commitment to quality, integrity and community, including the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates award for Highest Ranking Builder in Customer Satisfaction, Tarion Builder of the Year, the Ontario Home Builders

Brookfield Residential currently has active communities in Alliston (Treetops), Aurora (The Arbors), Bradford (Grand Central), Mono (Fieldstone), Niagara-on-the-Lake (The Village), and Tottenham (Willow Glen). This year, Brookfield will release a variety of upcoming communities in Aurora, Paris, Pickering and Whitby.

A sold-out crowd of over 400 people gathered in an elegantly decorated room to sip some wine, enjoy a fine meal and talk about mental health during the 7th Annual Hatsquerade Charity Gala in October. The gala was hosted by Hats On For Awareness, a charitable organization dedicated to raising awareness, understanding and widespread acceptance of mental illness and addiction.
Guests donned their most elaborate hats to help raise money and awareness about mental health, with prizes going to the best male and female toppers.
Hats on for Awarness raised $116,000 for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Humber River Hospitals Mental Health and Addictions Program.
Hats On For Awareness was founded by Enza Tiberi-Checchia and Benny Caringi in honour of Tiberi-Checchias father.
As someone who suffers from mental illness and who has lost someone close to them to suicide, I know the importance of raising awareness about this important issue, said Tiberi-Checchia. Were pleased to host this event to do our small part to ensure those who need help are able to find it.n HatsOnForAwareness.com

is introduced to the market for the first time is the impression that will stick with potential purchasers, as well as other real estate agents who are looking for properties on behalf of their clients. Youll want to use a qualified professional to avoid these common DIY home-selling-route pitfalls.
n Dont price your home too high. Buyers will be checking comparable homes in your area to see how your home stacks up against the rest. Just because you might think that its the best house in the neighbourhood, your agent will be able to give you a reality check as to what its really worth.n Review a checklist with your agent and make sure that those major, and minor, repairs have been dealt with,
so that buyers can focus on your home rather than a list of potential projects.n Consider what renovations may be necessary to bring your home up to a competitive level. Outdated kitchens and bathrooms are often a deterrent, but only take on renovations that are realistic as it relates to timing and budget.n Depersonalizing ones home is one of the hardest things to wrap your mind around. Potential purchasers want to imagine what it would be like for them to live there. If theres too much of you (and your family) cramping their style, it will affect their perception. Declutter and pack up family photos, trophies and the oversized recliner. Rent a storage unit for this purpose, and make your home feel as clean, neutral and roomy as possible.n Professional photographs are a must. These images are often the first introduction to your property either online on in a presentation package. If the quality of the photos dont flatter your home and show off its best assets, prospective purchasers are going to be subconsciously influenced.n Leave the premises when your house is being shown and during a home inspection. Buyers want to feel free to voice their opinions, which could be helpful insight if your property isnt selling. So take a walk, go for a coffee and let your real estate agent do their job.
Youre making the move congratulations! Youve bought a brand new home and now you have to get your old home ready to sell.
Its a hot market, but things are starting to cool a bit and mortgage down payment requirements are fluctuating, which could put a glitch in your expected selling timeframe. Its imperative that you take into account all the factors that could make your house less marketable.
In my previous column, I talked about the importance of using a real estate agent. Because youre so close to your current home (physically and emotionally), youre likely to have a less realistic approach to the pricing and presentation. Its completely understandable, but how your home
