The briefI’ve been asked to design a mock-up of the homepage keeping in mind what a user can do on the website.
This design should highlight the most popular boards, products, brands & users on STYLIGHT
I also used some extra material coming from Max presentation for Exceed 2013 Conference in Berlin. Especially the part about the user research findings.
Defining the problem areaWhat problem do I have to solve?

Homepage as the first pageThe homepage should present the essence of a website. STYLIGHT is a website where users can: • find things they love (and compare them!)• get inspiration from other users• become a new star that leads the new fashion trend
Homepage should focus on 1 main actionSince the homepage should present everything the user can do, it’s hard to establish a hierarchy between all the available action.I assumed that the main action for the user is to become a member of STYLIGHT community.
Homepage can be view for the first, second, third timeWhen it’s possible to guess a few behavioral pattern, it’s a good idea to design a few strategies to be more effective
BenchmarkingWhat does “Homepage” mean?

Fold (768px)
Value proposition + call to actionThe visual and the value proposition make clear the style and the purpose of the website.
Three types of user, three things one can doI present all the possible things a use can do on the web site
The call to action below the foldIt’s important that the user can see the call to action while exploring the page
More detailsEach type of user reach his/her proper description without loosing the call to action

A possible strategyWhen possible, it’s a good idea to personalize a homepage

Fold (768px)
Visual + descriptionIt’s immediately clear the style of the website and what the user can do and
Value p. + call to action + a secondary actionIt’s a fact that the users come back to the homepage if they have seen something interesting during their search. Once you know that a user is a returning user you can propose a stronger call to action to improve the chance to have him/her as a new member. WARNING: don’t push to much and let the user to procrastinate the main action.
