sion, DVD player, computer,microwave oven, automatic electricgarage door openers, stereo compo-nents and on and on. A quick lookaround your home or apartment willlikely reveal a number of electricand electronic devices plugged intothe walls.

And, in less time than it takes toblink your eye, these modern luxu-ries and conveniences could begone.

Electrical surges cause millionsof dollars in damage to home appli-ances and electronics each year and,in most cases, this damage andinconvenience can be prevented.While lightning can cause somesurges, most are caused by otherfactors. Damaging electrical spikesoccur when the voltage in yourhome’s electrical system increasesand returns to normal within mil-lionths of a second.An electronic device you reallyneed

Properly installed surge protec-tion devices (SPD), combined witha good home grounding system

should protect your electrical andelectronic appliances from all butthe most severe electrical surges.For the best protection from surges,an SPD should be installed at theelectrical meter or main electricalpanel. Your utility company caninstall this device at your request. Ifyour utility company doesn’t offerthe service, a qualified electriciancan perform the work.

In addition, an SPD should beconnected to each device to be pro-

tected. For computers, TVs orVCRs, a multiport SPD is needed tohelp prevent outside surges fromcausing damage through a phone orantenna connection.A down to earth necessity

It’s important to note a goodelectrical grounding system isessential for SPDs to work. A quali-fied electrician or local buildingcode official may be able to verifythe quality of your grounding sys-tem. All surge protection equipment

should be approved by an independ-ent testing organization, such asUnderwriters Laboratories Inc. AnSPD to be installed at the electricalpanel or meter should be UL-listed1449 and IEEC 587 Category C.The SPD should also be rated fornot less than 40,000 amps. Surgeprotection devices meant for appli-ances and other electronics shouldbe UL-listed IEEE 587 Category Aor B and rated not less than 5,000amps. Both types of devices shouldhave the same clamping voltage,which should be rated between 400and 500 volts.More than an inconvenience

Electronic components andmicrochips are being installed inmost appliances, and they are verysensitive to surges. The electricalwindings in motors and even theinsulation on wiring can be dam-aged by a surge. But there is more tobe concerned about than the incon-venience of living temporarily with-out a phone, air conditioning or tel-evision.

Well pumps and sump pumpscan also fall prey to electricalsurges. Few of us could handle lifewithout running water; none of uswants to deal with a flooded base-ment. Now is the time to investigatesurge protection.
