Notes from the Superintendent:At its June 22, 2011 meeting the Hinsdale Central School Board of Education adopted the scope and concept of a
Capital Project totaling $2,900,000. We are anticipating a December 13 referendum and a 2012-13 construction time period.
Schools in New York are required to have a facilities study done every five years. Ours was completed during the
2010-11 school year and submitted to the State Education Department, as required. In that study, items such as lighting
upgrades, improvements in our heating systems, asbestos removal in crawlspaces, fuel oil, gasoline, and hot water tank
replacements, and necessary parking lot improvements, were listed among other items. Faced with the issue of costly
building upgrades and improvements at taxpayer expense in the future, we have decided to put all of these and other items
into a capital project. State aid on such a project would be at an approximate rate of 95% of eligible costs. If anything
listed is deemed to be “ineligible” for aid on our list, that part of the project will not be done.
HCS has completed a variety of these small projects in the past, enabling us to take advantage of New York State
financial assistance. When visitors come to our school they are always struck by what they see -- upgraded classrooms,
computer labs, gymnasiums, hallways and cafeteria, etc. Compared to other schools of this vintage, we have been well
taken care of! Keeping that honored tradition is just as important in 2011 as it has been in the past. HCS is a community
resource as well as a source of pride.
As was mentioned above, this project would be aidable at a rate of about 95%, so only 5 cents of every dollar would
be paid for by our local tax share. Looking at local school district tax rates for 2010-2011, I find that Hinsdale was below
average in both Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. The average school district tax rate in Cattaraugus last year was
$17.16 per thousand; in Allegany County it was $20.11. Tax rates in both counties ranged from a low of $7.31 to a high
of $29.56 per thousand. Hinsdale’s tax rate was $15.94. We have been able to keep that rate as low as we could due to
careful and conservative budgeting, as well as taking advantage of New York’s building assistance program and the fact
that we do get such a high percentage covered.
Please take a look at the items which will be included. If the project is approved by the voters, it will be prepared
to go to the State Education Department for review. That review process typically takes a few months; upon successful
approval and return to us, the bid process for contracting then begins. It may well depend on how the ‘competitive bids’
come in months from now as to whether all of these items can actually be afforded for our $2.9 million. If all cannot be
included, the Board of Education will discuss what must be left off and handled another year or not completed entirely.

15 HCS Students Tour Local Manufacturers
Nick McKinney of Southern Tier Ad-vanced Manufacturing Incentive (STAMI) invited area schools to send students for a day of touring area businesses. Hinsdale Central School sent 15 student on October 6 to Keystone Tool & Die and CUTCO Corporation for the whole day.
The objective of the tours was to have students see manufacturing up close and per-sonal. The tours were done in small groups, so the students could hear the tour guide and they were encouraged to ask questions along the way. At each of the manufacturing plants, the guides stressed that both math and science are very important in manufacturing. All levels of manufacturing -- from machine operators to engineers to sales people -- use information learned in the home school and at BOCES.
Students were amazed to see a part made at Keystone that is used to launch mis-siles from submarines. The visitors also got to touch a part that goes in ATM machines to count out money. They also saw connections for artificial limbs and machines made for other Olean area manufacturers.
Senior Anthony Giberson said, “This tour confirmed what I want to do with my job and what I’m learning in school will get used in a paying job.”
After touring CUTCO, student com-ments were: “How cool to have robots and humans making the knives” and “The Marine Corp knives are made the same way they were in 1942.”
Vehicle exhaust system Add emergency generator Mill asphalt areas Resurface parking lot Shared fuel system improvements
We are still looking at aspects of an energy performance contract; a number of these electrical and mechanical items may be covered by that contract which would ensure that the capital project stays at or below $2.9 million.
As always, support of Hinsdale Central by our community continues to be appreciated by our students, families, and staff members.
The overall impression was that the tours were a good learning experience and
opened the students’ eyes to really cool job opportunities in manufacturing.
HCS students are shown touring Keystone Tool & Die in Westons Mills.
The entire group from Hinsdale.

Update from the Guidance DepartmentCollege Applications: Seniors and their parents are reminded that college applications should be sent in by Thanksgiving Vaca-
tion, Christmas Break at the very latest. This allows a realistic time line for working on financial aid information. FAFSA forms are no longer sent to the guidance offices, as they are encouraging everyone to do the forms on line. The forms can also be download-ed from their web site at www.fafsa.ed.gov. We will also be mailing directly a downloaded version of the application to all students who have been accepted to college once they become available. A financial aid workshop for parents and students will also be held in January. More information on this when it becomes available.
PSAT Results For Juniors: All of our juniors took the PSAT on Wednesday, October 12. Within two months, the results from this test arrive at HCS. At this time, Mr. Cuddy will meet with the students and go over the results. With Mr. Cuddy’s assistance, all juniors will then either create an account with the College Board or sign up for a 2012 SAT exam. It is important for juniors to get the exam(s) completed during the 11th grade year, so their senior year can be devoted to the college application, financial aid and scholarship process. This also expedites the admissions process as colleges do not have to wait for the test results.
SAT examinations will be administered at Olean High School on the following dates . . .Test Date Application DeadlineDecember 3, 2011 November 8, 2011January 28, 2012 December 30, 2012March 10, 2012 February 10, 2012May 5, 2012 April 6, 2012June 2, 2012 May 8, 2012

ASVAB Being Offered at HCS HCS will offer the ASVAB Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery on Wednesday, December 7, at
12:30 p.m. to all juniors who wish to take the exam. Letters will be mailed home directly. The ASVAB Career Exploration Pro-gram can help young adults identify and explore potentially satisfying occupations and develop effective strategies to realize career goals. The ASVAB is one of the most widely used, multiple-aptitude tests in the world, developed and maintained by the Depart-ment of Defense. Over half of all high schools nationwide administer the ASVAB test to students in grades 10-12.
Seniors Urge Community to Go Green! The senior class would like to inform the community about our class project, “Going
Green.” Our goal for 2012 is to bring a sense of unity throughout the school by creating a compost tumbler. Students from all grade levels will contribute by recycling cafeteria scraps to make fertilizer. We will then sell our mature compost and use the funds to help us take our senior trip. In addition, we plan to make a senior garden that will leave a posi-tive impression on the school and the community as a whole. If you would like to donate leaves or compostable garbage (no meat products or liquids please), contact Mr. Griffith at [email protected]

HCS to Celebrate Family Literacy Day on Tuesday, November 1November 1 is National Family Literacy Day. Celebrated across the U.S. since 1994, this annual event provides an occasion for
schools and libraries to put a spotlight on activities that promote learning experiences for children and their families. Teacher and librarians understand that parents who read to their children everyday and talk about what they are reading together promote a joy of reading and life-long literacy achievement.
Consider these statistics: Children whose parents are involved with them in family literacy activities score 10 points higher on standardized reading tests. And children spend five times as much time outside the classroom as they do in school.
On Tuesday, November 1, HCS will hold a Family Literacy Day workshop for parents from 10:00-10:30 a.m. and 2:00-2:30 p.m. in Room 11. Presenters are Linda Skaggs, Elementary Reading Specialist, and Michelle Raab-Crawford, Speech and Language Pathologist. Also, the teachers in grades K-4 are inviting parents into their classroom to participate in literacy activities with their chil-dren. Finally, the school library will be open to parents from 2:15-3:00 p.m., so that parents may check-out books to continue Family Literacy Day at home.
Parents are invited to please join your child’s class for 30 minutes of literacy activities. Here is the schedule for parent visitations to each classroom . . .

If the Sipper Fits . . . HCS Drama Club to Present Cinderella!
By Katie Ward, Drama Club Advisor
Mark your calendars – Drama Club is back at HCS and on December 16 and 17 we will be presenting the musical Cinderella! This Rodgers and Hammerstein production first aired in 1957 as a live TV performance starring Julie Andrews. It aired again in
1965, this time starring Lesley Warren, and a third time in 1997, with Brandy playing Cinderella. Now, Hinsdale students and teachers will bring the show to life once more and remind us anything is possible if a pumpkin can transform into a carriage and a lowly servant girl can marry a prince!
Roles have been cast and practices are underway. If any parents are interested in lending a hand, please contact Mrs. Ward at [email protected].

SBU Literacy Students at HCSHinsdale’s elementary classes have been enjoying some extra literacy assistance
from St. Bonaventure University. SBU students from the undergraduate and the graduate programs in literacy have a public school classroom component where each student must work in a classroom.
Fortunately for HCS, we now have extra assistance Monday through Thursday in almost all of the elementary classes during reading or English Language Arts time. We hope the Bona students are enjoying their time spent with us! Our teachers and students certainly love having them in our classrooms!
Character Education Underway!
This year’s Character Education Pro-gram was launched with great fanfare! Ev-ery year the program starts off in September exposing students and faculty to the many fun activities in store for the year. The first assembly presented “responsibility” as the trait of the month of October. Students throughout elementary classrooms will be showing their most responsible behaviors in order to claim the prize of “Students of the Month.”
High School students contributed to the festivities by performing The National Anthem and “bringing the Bobcat” with them. Thank you to Courtney Lentz, Kristyn Hayman and Kaitlyn Layman. Mrs. Cindy Pierce, manager of the bus garage, talked to everyone about best behavior on the busses. Some very talented teacher-actors then dem-onstrated proper and improper behaviors. Students were entertained, but hopefully, understood the difference in the choices they make. Every month a bus driver will be spotlighted along with the “Best Behaved Bobcat Bus.” That bus will have the proud honor of displaying a special magnet on the side of their bus announcing how well they have behaved. The magnet was generously funded by the Hinsdale PTO.
Throughout the year, the committee has planned a variety of fun activities for students who earn the highly valued “Bobcat Bucks/Tickets.” Students can earn the bucks by conducting themselves in acceptable ways. The first fun activity will be held on Halloween/Harvest Party Day. While stu-dents are parading in their costumes, a few classrooms will be designated as “special rooms.” At these rooms, students will be permitted to exchange their “Bobcat Bucks/Tickets” for treats and prizes.
In coming months we will be looking for a variety of character building traits. The trait of the month will be displayed on the sign in front of the school. Notes will come home to parents and families when your little one has been crowned “Student of the Month.” Finally, monthly assemblies will honor those special people with fun and games and even some silliness! Hope to see you there!
Student Council will be selling Niagara Chocolates January 10-28, 2012. Money raised will be used to support the annual BOBCAT BLAST to be held on March 30, 2012. Students selling chocolates will be admitted to the function for FREE.

Automated Calling When School is Closed
As we did last year, we’ll use the au-tomated calling system to notify families when school is closed due to poor weather. This has worked well, but accurate phone numbers are always needed. If you’ve changed your home or cell number, please call Mrs. Henton in the main office (557-2227, ext. 400) and let her know.
You can also view cancellations and delays on Channels 2, 4, and 7 as well as listen for announcements on the WPIG/WHDL and MIX 101.5 radio stations.
Spelling Bee on Jan. 6
Hinsdale Central School students in grades 4-8 are all a-buzz preparing for our Second Annual School Spelling Bee. There will be three winners at each grade level. The
top three in grades 6-8 will then participate on January 6, 2012 to find our top speller, who will then be able to take the next step in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Good luck to each and every student who participates!
From the Art Department . . .By Stephanie Wick, Art Teacher
It’s that time of year again! We will be starting to use our tempera paints again soon and we are in need of some more clean tuna cans. Any donations would be greatly appreciated!
Design and development of Hinsdale Central’s Yearbook, the Panorama, is in full swing! Students are designing pages, taking pic-tures and w r i t i n g e x c i t i n g captions to help create an award w i n n i n g book . I f you would l i k e t o help be a part of its creation, we are looking for students and community members photos of school-related functions. If you have some photos that you would like in this year’s yearbook, please send them into Mrs. Wick at [email protected] or go to replayit.com, start an account and load the pictures on your own. This new web page allows any-one with school-related photos to upload to the yearbook site automatically! So get out there and take those pictures, we love to see our school from everyone’s different point of view!

In September, Mrs. Callen and Mrs. DeCapua’s Kindergarten kids got to experience the circle of life firsthand! After collecting monarch caterpillars, we observed the different phases of their life cycle over a few weeks and were amazed at the changes we saw! We learned that our caterpillars hatched from tiny eggs, changed into a chrysalis and later emerged as beautiful monarch butterflies. We had a lot of fun saying good-bye to our butterfly friends and even had a chance to hold one before it flew off to begin the cycle again!
