Citation Page:Character Profile-

I chose to have Romeo Montague represented by Zac Efron because not only does he fall around the same age as Romeo, but also because Zac has a real-life relationship with Vanessa Anne Hudgens (Juliet [Julez] Capulet). Romeo’s Facebook profile picture shows how he was formally dressed before attending the Capulet’s party. Also, his facial expressions in Romeo’s profile picture portray his hope for finding his true love. (I.I.236)

In Romeo Montague’s “Basic Information” section of his Facebook profile, I chose his birth date to be based on the fact that he is in his teenage years. Having Romeo be sixteen years old would be the perfect age for him because this is typically the age when young men start to take strong interest in young women. Moreover, I chose Romeo’s hometown as Verona, Italy because this is the setting of the play. I chose his political views to be Liberal Independent because in the play Romeo wants change between the two feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets. His hope for change and freedom brings out his liberal side, while he is still an Independent because in the play he isn’t very politically involved, but only has eyes for his one true love, Juliet (Julez) Capulet. For religious views, I decided to make Romeo’s religion Roman Catholic because of his association with Friar Lawrence. Throughout the play he confided in the Friar to help him with his situation with Juliet and the feud between the two families, and he even asked the Friar to marry them at once. Romeo’s repetitive visits to the church yard gives me the idea that he is a part of the Roman Catholic faith. Along with being a Christian, Romeo is employed as an Altar Boy for Friar Lawrence because he confides in him to help him through hardships he faced throughout the play and wants to give back for all the Friar has done to help and support him. (I.Prologue.II, II.III.68, III.I.63-66)

Citation Page:Character Profile and Character Quotation-

In the “Personal Information” section, the activities I included were based on his actions throughout the play. For example, after the Capulets’ party when he wishes to see Juliet again, he runs and leaps over the orchard walls. From this, I can infer that Romeo likes to run. Because of Romeo’s rash actions in Act III scene I when he fought against Tybalt, I also chose to have one of Romeo’s favorite activities fencing because this sport is associated with sword fighting. In addition, I observed how he enjoys being around his cousin Benvolio and great friend Mercutio which is why I chose “hanging out with friends” as an activity he likes to do. Last but certainly not least, I included “staying out late” as one as Romeo’s favorite activities because in Act III, he stays out all night outside the Capulet’s home conversing with Juliet. Romeo’s interests of love and women are depicted in the play when he confesses his love for Rosaline and Juliet. Moreover, the quote I chose that’s Romeo’s favorite quote is one of the famous author Nicholas Sparks; “Love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it.” I found this quote very relative to Romeo’s character because when he initially goes to Friar Lawrence to ask him to marry Juliet to him, the Friar questions whether his love for Juliet is artificial or not. (II.I.6, I.II.59, III.I.87, II.II.4, II.II.21, I.V.52-53).

Character Profile Continued-In Romeo Montague’s “Arts & Entertainment” section of his Facebook page, I thought it was

important to include his favorite songs that show contrasts of ups and downs that he faced throughout the play. For example, one of my song choices was “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter. The title really speaks for itself, but this “bad day” is portrayed more than once by Romeo’s character. He demonstrates feelings of depression early in the play when he learns Rosaline, who he thought was his true love, didn’t have the same feelings for Romeo. Mercutio and Benvolio notice his depression as well because he had locked himself up in his room for quite some time. Moreover, later in the play after falling in love with Juliet, when he learns of her “death”, his devastation connects with this song because the news ruined not only his day, but the rest of his life. However, a more positive song I chose for one of Romeo’s favorites was “Love Drunk” by Boys like Girls. This song explains how a boy was so in love with a girl that he was “hung over.” I believe this connects to Romeo’s character because his love for Juliet is so strong that his actions become rash and immature because Juliet is now his world. My other song choices for Romeo reflect on his devotion to Juliet and the love the two shared. (I.I.142)

Romeo is a romantic character who is not afraid to speak his mind and share feelings with others, especially Juliet. I thought having his favorite books Dear John and A Walk to Remember would reflect his romantic personality. His craving for romance also was represented in his favorite movies, “Titanic” ,“Twilight”, and “The Thornbirds”, as well as his favorite television shows “ MTV’s Rock of Love”, and “ABC’s The Bachelor.” Romeo’s strong interests in love and women drive my decisions of having Romeo’s favorites under “Arts & Entertainment” related to compassion and love.

Romeo’s favorite games, “Telephone” and “Manhunt”, are reflections on events that occurred in the play. For instance, when Friar John is unable to deliver the message about Friar Lawrence’s plans for Juliet, Romeo hears inaccurate information from his good friend, Bathlasar. This chain reaction of spreading false information is exactly what happens in the game “Telephone”, where one person whispers a piece of information and as it spreads through a line of people, the final person given the message has to say what they heard and see if it’s the same message sent out initially. Romeo’s other favorite game would be “Manhunt” because he seems to love adventure and being sneaky, and this game of “hunting” and “capturing” others is a sport that depicts just that.

Groups & Likes-

Romeo Montague belongs to five groups that associate with Mercutio’s death, a Montague family reunion (scheduled well before his death), Capulet Family Supporters, teen love, and a group for altar boys. I chose these as the Facebook groups Romeo’s joined because they tie in his interests of love, his grief over the loss of his great friend, Mercutio, a sense of unity with his family (although that unity was lost when he became so involved with Juliet), and his employment of being an Altar Boy for Friar Lawrence.

Romeo’s Facebook “Likes” show how he is naïve. For example, he liked a page that united those who have ever fallen in love and those who have fallen in love with the most beautiful women they’ve ever seen. Teenagers today in modern day society would like pages like these because they like to believe that even at a young age you can feel similarly to adults who have matured way beyond adolescent years. Another one of his likes shows that he is still young because he liked his high school’s Facebook page. In the play, sometimes it’s hard to imagine that these characters are around the same age as me and have already been through marriage, heart break, and death.

Citation Page:Friends and Photos-

Romeo Montague’s Facebook friends include members in his family, authority, and his friends. I chose to have his cousin Benvolio represented by Taylor Lautner because not only are they similar in age, but also because Bevolio displays similar character traits to Taylor Lautner. For example, they both like to help others. Taylor Lautner has donated to charities while Benvolio tries to keep peace between others. I chose to have Prince Escalus represented by Leonardo Dicaprio because the picture I found of him gave off a stern appeal to his personality, which is shown through Prince Escalus when he banishes Romeo from Verona. Because Corbin Bleu and Zac Efron are close friends in reality, I chose to have him represent Mercutio (Cutio) because his character always spends time with Romeo which also is true with Corbin and Zac in reality, as well. The roles of Nurse and Lady Montague are represented by my favorite middle-age actresses, Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock. They best represent the Nurse and Lady Montague because of their similar ages, but also because they are heart-filled and responsible women just like the characters they portray. I chose to have Romeo’s great friend Bathlasar represented by Nathan Kress because he also is around the same age as the character. Finally, Juliet (Julez) Capulet is represented by Vanessa Anne Hudgens, because she’s Zac Efron’s real-life girlfriend and the two are inseparable. Also, she falls under the same age as Juliet’s character in the play.

The photos in Romeo’s Facebook album are a picture of himself, one with Juliet, and one with his friend Mercutio. I chose these pictures to show different aspects of Romeo’s life. Because he is madly in love with Juliet , I chose a picture of Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens when they demonstrate their feelings of love to each other. I chose for Romeo to have a solo picture to show how he was single before falling in love with Juliet. The photo of Romeo with Mercutio shows how in his social circle, he is very close to Mercutio.

Wall posts-

Romeo’s posts on his Facebook profile show contrasting emotions throughout the short period of time. His first status shows his heart break over Rosaline, and his doubts for ever finding someone as beautiful her. However, after attending the Capulet’s party, he meets Juliet (Julez) Capulet and includes in his status that he has completely forgotten about Rosaline and he hasn’t felt true love until he met her except for the fact that she was the daughter of the enemy Capulet family. Meanwhile, Romeo changes his Facebook relationship status to “It’s complicated” with Juliet and Mercutio writes on his wall regarding his “disappearance” after the party. (I.I.216-217, II.I.5)

Later, when Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar Lawrence, he changes his relationship status to “Married” to Juliet. Nurse then friend requests him on Facebook after the plan for having Romeo sneak into Juliet’s bedchamber with a ladder, and posts a reminder on his wall about the plan while also saying that Juliet is excited to see him again. However, things start to take a turn for the worse. When Romeo accepts Prince Escalus’ friend request, he informs Romeo of his banishment after slaying Tybalt Capulet previously. Before his wall post, Romeo had changed his status to say that he is confused of what just happened and why when he murdered Juliet’s cousin. Also, Juliet’s only wall post tells Romeo that she had a great time with him when he followed through with the Nurse’s plans. (II.6.78-82)

Romeo’s next Facebook status shows how after being banished from Verona, he is spending time in Mantua awaiting any word from his wife, Juliet. He accepts his good friend, Bathlasar’s friend request and then later Bathlasar writes on Romeo’s wall informing him of Juliet’s “death” when he was clearly unaware that she had been put under a spell by Friar Lawrence. After hearing the tragic news, Romeo makes yet another Facebook status that expresses his devastation, and how he can’t live without her love. Finally, Lady Montague friend requests her son to see what he’s up to, and later learns that he has taken his own life. She expresses how dearly she will miss him and how the sorrow of her son’s lost is slowly killing her. Later do we know she has died of grief. Romeo Montague’s Facebook account is later deactivated. (V.I.25, V.I.19-20)
