Background Hands In was created by the TREE Steering Group by Pioneers and Venturers in 2011 – the idea is simple: Groups complete similar activities to feel part of a wider movement during the latter half of the Spring Term. Since 2011 groups have spent time making quilts (now on display at our Centres), geo-caching, writing poetry, exploring Woodcraft Folk’s history, looking at diversity and contributing to our strategic plan.

Theme The theme for 2019 is Global Citizenship as we prepare for Woodcraft Folk’s next international camp in 2020. For more information about Woodcraft Folk’s next international camp please visit www.commonground.camp What is a global citizen? We quite like this definition:

A global citizen is someone who is aware of and understands the wider world – and their place it. They take an active role in their community, and work with others to make our planet more equal, fair and sustainable.

It fits really well with Woodcraft Folk aims of ‘International Understanding’, ‘One World’ and ‘Education for Social Change’. In the current uncertainty which exists about Britain’s place in Europe we also thought there was great value in encouraging our younger members to consider their place as global citizens – the similarities and differences in childhood experiences across the globe. Groups could explore how to span the world with friendship! Please share photos and descriptions of your activities with [email protected] so that we can celebrate them in our newsletter, on our website and social media.

Friendship This activity takes about 30 minutes and is suitable for Woodchips and Elfins.

Aim: For group members to have an awareness of others in relation to themselves, to begin to appreciate that their action have consequences and show concern for others in their immediate peer group. What to do: You will need paper, glue, scissors and materials for collage

1. Remind group members that Woodcraft Folk’s motto is ‘Span the World with Friendship’. Ask the group to share how friends behave, what do friends do, how do friends behave?

2. You could move the discussion to explore how the group can make friends with new members. Or how the group can make others feel more involved/happier? Keep the discussion short.

3. In small groups ask members to record what words they would use to describe a friend. 4. In the small groups make collaborative collages of their Woodcraft Folk friends. 5. You may wish to facilitate a discussion whilst the group are being creative to explore what

members can do if they fall out with others in the group, how they can make friends.

Extension: Read a story that illustrates friendship, such as Aldo by John Burningham.

Story time There are many stories which can be used to help members explore big issues, take a look at:

George save the world by lunchtime, Jo Readman. A simple picture book looking at repairing, reusing, recycling and purchasing locally or from charity shops.

The Lorax, Dr Seuss. A well-known tale of deforestation and industrial greed.

Ten things I can do to help my world, Melanie Walsh. Explores simple ways we can all make a difference

Belonging, Jeannie Baker. A picture book of transforming industrial wasteland into green open spaces.

Thomas the Tank Engine! Aim: Introduce very young children and families to the Sustainable Development goals. Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends have teamed up with the United Nations to produce a series of short films linked to each of the sustainable development goals.

https://www.allaboardforglobalgoals.com/en-us

Endangered species Suitable for Elfins and younger Pioneer groups. Aim: To introduce children to endangered animals and to begin to raise their understanding of how our actions impact on the world. What to do: You will need craft material for making posters and masks. The suggestions below can be down over many group nights or you could offer children the choice of activities in one session.

1. Read ‘Harry and the Dinosaurs Go Wild’ by Ian Whybrow. A simple story that see Harry motivated to take action to save endangered tigers after a trip to the Zoo.

2. Ask the children to list what endangered animals they know. You will find facts about endangered species at the link below, including films, photos and more.

3. Like Harry encourage them to make posters. Alternatively make masks of the animals 4. As a group celebrate the masks and posters the children have made. 5. Discuss what they could do to support animals.

https://kidworldcitizen.org/endangered-species-projects-lessons-kids/ Pioneer groups may want to do more on:

Deforestation

Palm Oil

GloBingo An Oxfam activity that takes about 10 minutes and would be perfect for Elfins or a starter activity to explore global issues with Pioneers.

Aim: This simple version of people bingo stresses the degree to which we are all globally interconnected. The questions can be adapted to make them easier or more difficult according to the ability and age of the group. What to do: You will need a GloBingo sheet for all group members and pens/pencils. You might like to have an incentive (snack) for all who complete the sheet.

1. Give each member a GloBingo sheet 2. Ask each member to move around the room asking different group members which

statement applies to them 3. Gather a different name in each box

Follow up discussion should focus on what members have discovered by playing GloBingo and what they believe the purpose of the game is. Suggested questions: Find someone who:

1. Has eaten something from another country during the last week.

2. Can say ‘hello’ in another language.

3. Is wearing something made in another country?

4. Can name a famous sports star from another country.

5. Can name a charity that works in other countries.

6. Has used email to communicate with somebody in a different country.

7. Has a member of their family living in another country.

8. Has travelled to another country.

9. Can name a famous politician from another country.

Pioneer and Venturer groups may like to do a project on another country – perhaps one you would like to camp with at Common Ground. You could:

Make contact with another group to share your favourite games

Make contact with another IFM group

Explore similarities and differences e.g. schooling, leisure, sport, diet

Learn a song in a different language

You could choose to watch inspirational videos from Global Citizen of individuals making a difference in their community (please watch in advance to make sure they are age appropriate for your group): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg3_C7BwcV0kBlJbBFHTPJQ Other projects could look at social justice or climate change issues, for example:

Go Goals Designed for 8 – 10 year olds, so perfect for Pioneers and older Elfin groups. Aim: Designed to teach children and young people about the Sustainable Development Goals. Their role in the future of the planet as individuals, team players and responsible citizens. What to do: You will need to download rules, questions, board game at https://go-goals.org/downloadable-material/

1. There are 63 squares on the board and players advance by rolling a dice (a downloaded template for the dice is included in the above link)

2. The board is a little like snakes and ladders, but with ladders and waterslide – ladders help you go up and waterslides help you go down.

3. If a player lands on a square with a Sustainability Goal on it they draw a card on the same number. Their neighbouring player should read out the question – if the player gets it right they get another go!

Rich & poor

Aim: For members to gain an awareness of poverty and a sense of social justice. What to do: You will need a pens, large piece of paper and a copy of the following proverb displayed for all to see:

“Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish been caught

will we realise that we cannot eat money!”

1. Discuss the meaning of the proverb within the group, or if easier in smaller groups to give more members the chance to speak

2. Divide the large piece of paper in two and write ‘rich’ on one half and ‘poor’ on the other 3. Ask the group what they think the terms mean – what does it mean to be rich? 4. Initially the group are likely to focus on material wealth but encourage them to look at these

terms in their broadest sense e.g. richness is terms of friends, beautiful view, opportunities, health, cultural experiences

5. In small groups ask members to reflect on how they people can be both rich and poor e.g. they have opportunities but live in an area with poor air quality, they live in a household with a car but not the freedom to drive it, they have access to healthcare but can’t afford holidays, they own their own home but have poor health, they have no worries but do not have access to education

6. Individually ask members to record what makes them feel rich e.g. friends, camps. You can decide whether the group are ready to share their own personal reflections, but could conclude with celebrating the ‘rich’ opportunities the group has e.g. outdoor adventures, friendship, solidarity with others

Go bananas This activity is designed for 7 to 12 year olds, so perfect for Pioneers and older Elfins. Aim: To encourage children to think about where their food comes from and to develop critical thinking skills. What to do: You will need a map, pens and paper.

1. Download all resources and photos at https://www.oxfam.org.uk/education/resources/go-bananas

2. Use the photos from the download pack to show the journey of a banana all the way from Columbia to British supermarkets

3. Support the group to look at a map to highlight which countries grow bananas and the journey they make to the UK

4. Introduce the group to the concept of fair trade – you could do this by eating fair trade bananas and explaining that they taste the same but sustainably support the communities in which they are grown.

5. There is a banana quiz, ranking exercise and ‘can you make it as a banana farmer?’ game included in the downloads

Your Life, My Life

A short collection of films and accompanying activities to support children aged 5 to 9 years to identify similarities and differences in our lives. www.oxfam.org.uk/education/resources/your-life-my-life

170 challenges Aim: To give practical suggestions of things people can do towards the Sustainable Development Goals What to do: You will need pen, paper, envelops and a list of the 170 actions

1. Download a list of actions at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iMdE6DLLuCqwq3K9U-DaTUWB6KyMa8QG/view

2. Get inspired by 170 Actions to transform our world – a global citizenship themed ’50 things to do before you are 11 ¾s’. As a group review the suggested challenges and select some to do as a group and some to do individually.

3. The book contains 10 daily suggestions for each Sustainable Development Goal on how individually we can make a difference to the world around us. Challenges include buy a fair trade product, share a skill, donate to a food bank, eat a healthy diet.

4. Give each member a pen, paper and envelop. Ask them to write down what they intend to do in the coming week.

5. Save the pledges and then open them the following week to see how well they have done. 6. Host a decision about how easy/difficult it was to change their behaviour

Extension: Perhaps your group could create a challenge sheet for our groups e.g. 20 things for Pioneers to do
