Home Visitor Child Development

Associate®

The HV Child Development Associate® is a

person able to meet the specific needs of

parents and their children and who, with parents

and other adults and professionals, works to

help parents nurture their children’s

physical, social, emotional, and intellectual

growth in a child development framework.

BackgroundThe 2012 revised Home Visitor CDA includes:

1. updated Home Visitor Competency Standards and assessment instruments

2. streamlined and simplified LAT process to facilitate a smooth evaluation process

3. new publications and forms that reflect the changes

The core standards are the same, but their definition

and examples were updated and expanded.

The Standards reflect current research and new trends in the field of

early childhood education and the body of knowledge and appropriate

practice expected of the CDA Home Visitor as the adult educator.

These expectations include knowledge of brain development,

social-emotional development, challenging behaviors, domestic

violence, substance abuse, networking with community

agencies, individual family planning and implementation, crisis

intervention, cultural sensitivity, and advocacy, among other subjects.

Emphasis was added on language, literacy and dual language

learners.

3. Promoting parents’ use of positive ways to support children’s social

8. Understanding principles of child developing and learning

Education Requirements

The revised content must be included in the 120 clock hours of training.

- 6 Statements of Competence

- Resource Collection (17 items)

Parent Questionnaires:

- distributed and collected by the Parent /

Community Representative

- must have one from each family in the

caseload

- extensive tally completed

Parent Questionnaires:

- distributed and collected by the Candidate

- handed over, sealed, to the P/C Rep

- no minimum requirement, no tally

- content revised and simplified

Portfolio and Questionnaires prepared within

12 months before LAT meeting

PRF and Questionnaires prepared within 6

months before application to the Council
