There are three ways to access SPSS (all described in related sections below):

1. Running a remote desktop application on your device, which connects to a virtual SPSS application installed on a UW Windows server.

2. Running SPSS as a window in your browser. This is inferior to the first option, so try it only if nothing else works. This option is available from the thin clients in the AL lobby as well as in most Windows-based public computer stations/labs on campus.

3. Use the public computing labs in the room in which classes are held, PAS 1080, PAS 1098 (Windows machines only), PAS 1099 and PAS 1237. To find the software, from the Start menu either type SPSS (to locate IBM SPSS Statistics 23) or choose All Programs, then IBM SPSS Statistics, and then IBM SPSS Statistics 23.

SPSS in Arts computing labsSPSS is available in the following Arts computing labs, in the labs where the related classes are held:

PAS 1080 PAS 1098 (Windows machines only) PAS 1099 PAS 1237

a. Type SPSS (to locate IBM SPSS Statistics 23)OR

b. Choose All Programs, then IBM SPSS Statistics, and then IBM SPSS Statistics 23.

Using the remote desktop application – PC usersThere are two situations:

1. If you are on campus and connected to the Eduroam wireless network, just run the appropriate .rdp file. These files can be downloaded from LEARN.

a. If your PC is running a version of Windows earlier than Windows 8, you might wish to download and install RDP 8.1 on your computer to obtain better performance: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=41988

2. If you are off campus, you will need to establish a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection with uWaterloo before you can run the .rdp files. Establishing such a connection requires a VPN client (Cisco AnyConnect) installed on your computer. See the following web page for details:

a. https://uwaterloo.ca/information-systems-technology/services/virtual-private-network- vpn/about-virtual-private-network-vpn

Using the remote desktop application – Mac users (including iPads)There are two situations:

1. If you are on campus and connected to the Eduroam wireless network, just run the appropriate .rdp file. These files must be created on your computer using the instructions below.

2. If you are off campus, you will need to establish a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection with uWaterloo before you can run the .rdp files. Establishing such a connection requires that a VPN client be installed on your computer. See the following website for details:

a. https://uwaterloo.ca/information-systems-technology/services/virtual-private-network- vpn/about-virtual-private-network-vpn

Below are the steps about setting up the RDP file:

Change the default security settings:

o Click the Apple menu, and select System Preferences:

o Close the Remote Resources pane. You should now see all the resources that you have access to within the instance of RemoteApp, e.g.:

o Next time you log on, just search for “Microsoft Remote Desktop”, the above Windows will show up. Click and run the app.

Running SPSS through a browserThis is another way to run SPSS on a UW Windows server. It is not recommended because it involves extra sign-ons each time you wish to access the program. This option is a fallback in case unexpected problems arise with the remote desktop access given above.

There are two steps. The first step is done only one time and sets up the browser to access the UW RDP website for SPSS.

Step 1If the browser to be used is IE, download the file of registration entries (SPSSVDI.reg) from LEARN and double-click on it.

Instructions for Firefox are given below.

Firefox settings for individual users:

o Open Firefox and type about:config in the address bar.

o Click on “I will be careful, I promise!” button

o Type the following "network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris" in search

o Double click the Preference name of network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris

o Enter the URL of the site: https://appweb.nexus.uwaterloo.ca

Step 21. Using your browser, go to the following website https://appweb.nexus.uwaterloo.ca/RDWeb

and login with your WatIAM password. (The username has to include Nexus\userID)2. Once logged in, click on IBM SPSS Statistics 233. Make sure it says Open with Remote Desktop Connection (default) then click OK4. Another window will appear asking if you want to trust the publisher of this RemoteApp

program, click Connect

5. You will then be prompted to enter your credentials (Nexus\userID as the username, and your WatIAM password). Click OK

Having problems?

Opening filesSome students may be unable to open or locate SPSS files saved locally on their computer. To get around this problem, you will need to map your N: drive: this is your student network drive that you would normally access through logging in to a lab computer on campus. SPSS should be able to see and access the folders within this drive and allow you to open your files. Here are the instructions:

Before beginning, please make sure you are either connected to eduroam or have successfully installed and connected to the campus network with the VPN client.

Mac users1. In Finder, click on Go in the top menu2. Select Connect to Server3. Enter the following path, substituting in your own userid (your Quest userid):

smb://files.uwaterloo.ca/students$/userid4. Click Connect.5. A pop-up will ask you for your username and password. This is again your Quest userid and

password, not your computer’s username and password.6. When it connects you should be able to see some folders such as Documents. You can right click

(e.g. two finger click / CTRL + click) on the folder you want to save your files in (e.g. Documents) and choose Make Alias. This alias can be put onto your desktop for easy access in moving future files. In the future you can click this alias and immediately access the folder (after entering your userid and password) rather than re-connecting the server.

7. To access your files now, move them into the folder on this newly mapped drive. Then in SPSS, open them by selecting the network (N:) drive labeled with your userid from the drop-down menu labeled “Look in:”

Windows 7 users1. Go to My Computer2. Click on Map Network Drive in the top menu3. Select a letter for the drive (you may choose the 'N:' drive for consistency with using the public

computer labs)4. Enter the appropriate path for the drive:

a. For Arts students:\\files.uwaterloo.ca\students$\userid

5. Click OK

Windows 10 1. Go to This PC2. Go to the Computer tab that the top menu3. Click on Map Network Drive

10

Page 11: Home | University of Waterloo - Options for Accessing SPSS ... · Web viewThe first step is done only one time and sets up the browser to access the UW RDP website for SPSS. Step

4. Select a letter for the drive (you may choose the 'N:' drive for consistency with using the public computer labs)

5. Enter the appropriate path for the drive:a. For Arts students:

\\files.uwaterloo.ca\students$\userid6. Click OK

Remote desktop not accepting your username and passwordIf the .rdp files are not accepting your username and password, ensure that you are entering your UWaterloo userid, not your student email or student number. If you still cannot log in, add “nexus\” to the beginning of your userid to ensure you are logging in to the correct domain.
