Throughout Year 7, students study English through the Thematic curriculum, working closely with the Humanities Department to encourage strong cross-curricular links. Students are encouraged to learn in an independent fashion and develop confidence in improving their ranging BLP (Building Learning Power) skills. The Year Seven English curriculum allows students access to a range of texts, cultures and experiences; our students delve deep in to the worlds of novels, unravel the mysteries of poetry, and explore the theatrical delights of Shakespeare.English Home Uniform Homework Lessons Teachers Result Both KS3 and KS4 pupils at Smiths Wood Sports College have three hours of mathematics every week. In Year 7, sets are of mixed ability. Sets are streamed in year 9, as this is when the preparation for GCSE study begins. A mathematics challenge club is run to stretch the most able pupils, and they are encouraged to solve more unusual problems that they may not get to see in the classroom. For those who attend this club, there is an opportunity to take part in the UKMT Team Mathematics Challenge. We also have a support programme in place, called Power of 2, which aims to give extra help in the form of one-on-one sessions during mathematics lessons each weekMaths Home Uniform Homework Lessons Teachers Result Large sports hall with 4 badminton courts, 2 half and one full basketball court, 1 volleyball court, 1 five-a-side football pitch and 1 netball courtHigh ceiling large gymnasium for trampolining and gymnastics, including a multi-route climbing wall20 metre swimming poolLarge fitness suite with 21 stations for aerobic and resistance trainingLarge artificial turf pitch with 3 cross-pitch 5-a-side football areas, 1 football pitch and 1 hockey pitchMulti-Use Games Area with 3 netball courts2 grass football pitches and 1 rugby pitch (with summer term six-lane 400m athletics track)4 dry changing rooms and 2 pool changing roomsCanteen and theatre break-out spaces for dance and problem-solving lessonsPerformance analysis theory room with computers and interactive whiteboard
