antiques made from all types of materials, including wood, metal, pewter, glass, brass, bronze and wrought-iron.

Drawing from his extensive ex-perience, he will offer a class on the care and preservation of an-tique furniture, along with his co-teacher, Patricia Evans, through Palo Alto Adult School on Feb. 2. His class will deal with identify-ing and measuring the value of antiques, different causes of dam-age and necessary precautions to preserve their value.

“Abuse by humans is the most common cause of damage,” he said, adding that people some-times lift and move antiques care-lessly or place them incorrectly at home, such as keeping an antique table under the sun, which would bleach the wood.

Born in Heimbuchenthal, a small community in Bavaria, Germany, Umhofer worked in antiques for 20 years, before moving to the United States and establishing his own business under the name “Edel-weiss Restorations.”

Some of the unusual antiques that he has worked on include a secretary desk from the 1500s with secret compartments, an as-tronomical clock nearly destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earth-quake, a dresser from the mid-1800s made from a single piece of mahogany, a 400-pound Venetian

mirror mounted on a hand-pol-ished and chiseled marble stand, and an ornate picture frame he once fixed for the actress Kathryn Crosby.

Though he spends most of his time fixing antiques damaged by improper care, bad weather or pets, a large part of his work also involves correcting misguided at-tempts by people to fix them. In his class, he will discuss appropri-ate quick-fixes that everyone can apply, along with a list of materi-als to have at home for spills or minor damages. He will also give tips on securing furniture properly to protect them from damage due

to earthquakes. Restoring antiques can be more

challenging when there are miss-ing parts, especially if they are very old. “Some of these antiques, for example, are made from the wood of trees that don’t grow any-more,” Evans said. When he can’t find a missing part, he simply makes them from scratch.

“He makes every single piece he needs: tiny screws, wood pieces, keys — even the supports to hold the antiques in place when work-ing on them. He is unbelievably talented,” she added.

Each piece he works on is a learning experience, requiring pa-

tience and remembering what was applied to a similar piece earlier. Never having an assistant or ap-prentice may have made it more challenging, but he admits that he would rather be responsible for ev-ery piece himself.

“I can’t wait for Monday to start working on a new piece,” he said, with the excitement of a scientist looking forward to his next experi-ment.

In many ways, restoring antiques is a science, according to Umhofer. You have to study each piece care-fully, analyzing the physical prop-erties of the material and work-ing out how to bring it back to its original state, before “rolling up your sleeves and starting to work on it.” “Restoration is like color photography: You need to get the right color and finish from differ-ent angles. The same laws of phys-ics, of reflection and absorption of light, apply here.”

Ultimately, restoring antiques is all about bringing them back to their original state and not about making them look fancy or better. “I don’t do cosmetic repairs. My work should not be seen. If you see something I did, then I did a lousy job,” he said.

During the class, he also plans on giving suggestions on what to look for when visiting an antique or furniture store. He laments that modern furniture is short-lived and mostly made using machines and computer-aided programming.

“Machines don’t know where the

strength of the wood lies. Nobody learns woodworking from scratch anymore; the knowledge and the craftsmanship is gone,” he said.

He owes his knowledge to the fresco painters, druggists, wood-workers and blacksmiths in his village, from whom he learned most of his skills. He still reads a lot and is constantly updating his knowledge on new methods and techniques. He also documents his work meticulously and hopes to give this accumulated knowledge back to the world one day.

“It is challenging, but I like it,” he said, adding that antiques are his calling.

“I love what I do and it gives me a lot of satisfaction.”

SALES AT A GLANCE

There are two types of deal killers in real estate: those that are correctable or avoidable and those that are core

beliefs or superstitions and unalterable. The buyer may not even consider mak-

ing an offer to purchase a home if certain conditions are present. Many of these be-liefs are held in multiple cultures so the groups are not identified by name in this article. As of late, Realtors are seeing more superstitions coming into play.

Understanding their clients’ needs is ex-tremely important. Realtors can do some extra work by reviewing homes to save time for their clients if they understand their issues and needs. There is no need to show a property with problems unless there is a creative solution. A few of these can be remedied with mirrors, crystals, screens and repositioning an entry door, but some are just not going to work for certain buyers.

Here are some of the superstitions and core beliefs that can impact a potential sale:

The shape of the lot: A lot that is shaped like the head of a tiger is unde-sirable in some groups and they will not even consider buying the property. On the other hand one shaped like a cow’s head is good. These shapes are found primar-ily at the end of a cul-de-sac or a court. The tiger has a very narrow front and the back end is wide. The opposite is true of the cow. A square or rectangular lot is preferred.

Sunlight exposure: Many cultures have sunlight issues; they differ depending on the ethnic groups. Some will only accept a home that faces south/north with south being the entry to the home. Others want a south/west frontage or only an eastern entry. Thank goodness they do not all want the same exposure so many options are open for the seller.

The house is located on a T intersec-tion: A house that sits on a street where another street is directly perpendicular to it will cause some buyers to cringe. The orientation of the perpendicular street brings in excessive energy towards the home that can disrupt good fortune from being able to settle inside the home.

House numbers: Some groups do not want a number 4 in their house numbers. The number 4 means death. Another group does not like the address numbers ending in a downward stroke. An address with the last number ending in the number 1, 4, 7 or 9 indicates that the house will bring bad luck to the occupants. The downward stroke when the number is written causes

all good luck to de-cline. On the other hand some believe that a number 8 or 9 brings good luck and fortune.

The number of steps on the stair-case or the loca-tion: On the first ascending step to

the front door, the buyer chants “gold,” second step, “silver,” third step “debt.” This chant is repeated until the last step is reached. If the last step lands on debt there is no deal. For some, a descending staircase that leads to the front door is a sure sign of future failing finances. Its presence indicates that all money enter-ing the household will surely flow out due to the direct pathway of the stairs to the front door.

The back door can be seen as you en-ter the front door: If the back door is parallel with the front door when enter-ing the home, some believe that all good fortune experienced while residing in that home will be short lived. Good fortune will go in the front door and quickly come out of the back door. Others believe the garden should not be seen from the front door for the same reason.

In California, we have multiple real-estate disclosures that have to be filled in by the seller. The buyer is given the disclosures to approve or disapprove the purchase. I instruct my sellers to disclose every negative issue they are aware of other than superstitions to protect them and the buyer.

My favorite answer was by one of my sellers whom I had assisted several times with his homes regarding buying and sell-ing. On his last sale he marked the “yes” box that there was a death in the home within the past three years. When ques-tioned about his answer he replied, “Our family cat died last year.” Precious and thoughtful answer, would you agree?

It is fortunate that not all people have strong superstitions but it is helpful for the seller and the Realtor to have compassion and understanding regarding the feelings of those who have genuine beliefs that may affect the purchase of a home.
