Congratulations! on your purchase of theSoo-Soft Digital Water Softening System.This unique water softening systemsproduct, delivers numerous benefits to theindividual and our human environment.The purpose of this booklet is to help thereader understand the benefits to be gainedby changes that will occur in their waterusing the Soo-Soft Digital Water SofteningSystem.

Many conventional water softeners replacea part of the calcium in the water with salt.Excessive salt in water used for drinkingwater or watering growing plants, lawnsand other vegetation is not typicallythought of as beneficial. The Soo-Soft isunconventional since it’s a system thatworks by changing the calcium in a uniquephysical way. This special method softensthe water in a safe and healthy way.

This booklet is divided into sections thatwill explain how water treated by the Soo-Soft system will affect detergent use,household appliances, plumbing systems,water filters, as well the health of our skin,hair and teeth and our overall health

Each section is outlined in the table ofcontents listing the effects that the Soo-Softsystem will have on individual appliances,housekeeping issues, swimming pools,spas, landscaping benefit, plumbing andthe associated benefits. A brief section isincluded on the technology of the Soo-Softsystem and on other water quality issueswith suggested methods for correctingthem.

Initial Descaling Period

Shortly after installation of your new Soo-Softsystem a noticeable change occurs in waterquality. It feels and tastes softer than before. Lesssoap, laundry detergent, and shampoo are requiredto get the same cleaning effect. Afterapproximately three weeks, more significantchanges will take place. As pre-existing hardcalcium deposits are removed from the plumbing

system, the Soo~Soft benefits are realized. Inexisting construction, these changes take about 90days to complete.

Years of hard buildup are removed over this periodof time. As the Soo~Soft system begins to work,this lime scale starts to come out in a gradualprocess. The more water flows through the systemduring this period the faster these benefits occur.

During this time it is not unusual for water toappear “cloudy” as particles of hard calciumbuildup are washed away. The plumbing system isgradually cleaned of hard calcium leaving a formas soft as talcum powder. This soft powder ismuch easier to clean from all surfaces. The bestcleaner to remove this soft powder is whitevinegar. No harsh chemicals are required.

Water HeatersWater heaters operate more efficiently when nothindered by scale buildup and sediment.Operating a water heater with only 1/4 inch oflime scale build-up on heating elements canincrease energy costs up to as much as 40%. Scaledeposits can also shorten the life of water heaters.When water-heaters are scale-free, their energyconsumption can be reduced to levels comparableto those of brand new water heaters.

As existing hard calcium deposits are convertedinto a softer form the loosened calcium willaccumulate in the bottom of the water heater. Thissediment can be removed by draining a fewgallons from the water heater twice per monthusing the drain valve at the bottom of the tank.This water will appear cloudy at first as theloosened calcium deposits are removed. As theplumbing system is cleared the water will runclear.

It may be necessary to turn the water heaterthermostat to a cooler setting after the 90 dayclean-out period since the heating element will beable to operate more efficiently.

Washing MachinesWith the Soo~Soft system installed less detergentwill be required to get the same cleaning effect. Asclothing is washed microscopic hard calciumdeposits are removed from fabric and clothes willfeel softer. If you now use fabric softeners it maybe necessary to reduce the amount added.

Examine the clothes at the end of the final rinsecycle. If there is any detergent left in the clothesreduce the amount of detergent used until clothesare free of soap residue.

Towels and other clothes come out of the dryersofter and last longer. This is due to the removal ofabrasive hard calcium which can contribute toadditional wear to clothes while in the washingmachine.

DishwashersHeated water produces hard calcium deposits inthe dishwasher. The pump, plumbing and eveninside surfaces of the dishwasher are often loadedwith old, hard lime scale.

Once the Soo~Soft system begins to work itdissolves and removes lime scale from dishwashersurfaces and pipes that feed it. After the 90-daydescaling period feed pipes, heating element anddishwasher should be cleared.

Is important to use a dishwasher detergent thatoffers a clear rinse cycle such as Cascade PureRinse formula ™. Avoid using the citrus scentedor gel varieties of this product. Use a product suchas Glass Magic™ to aid in keeping glasses free ofdeposits. A cup of vinegar added to rinse watercan be an effective glassware rinse.

The dishwasher itself can be cleaned of hardcalcium with a product such as DishwasherMagic™ or Jet Dry™ dishwasher cleaner. Thiswill speed up the process of hard calcium removal.

After the 90-day de-scaling period the use of theserinsing and cleaning aids on in your dishwashercan often be reduced. It may also be necessary toreduce the amount of detergent used if you find asoap film left on the dishes. Try starting with halfof the amount of detergent you normally use.Increase this amount gradually until your dishesand glassware are sparkling clean.

Coffee MakersCoffee makers are prime candidates for build-upof scale as a result of hard water. They can be de-scaled easily by putting 2 cups of vinegar through

the system and allowing it to sit overnight.Following the vinegar run at least 2 pots of plainwater through the system to remove vinegar andcalcium residue.

New ConstructionIf the Soo~Soft system is installed in a new home,the 90-day de-scaling process is unnecessary. Newappliances and other equipment have no scaleaccumulation. If previously used appliances aremoved to a new home where the Soo~Soft systemis installed any previously accumulated scale isremoved by the Soo~Soft technology. It may takeup to 90-days for the Soo~Soft process to cleanyour previously used appliances.

Household Benefits

Sinks, Tubs, Showers and ToiletsHard calcium is often deposited on bathtubs,sinks, showers and toilet bowls as unsightly stainswhich are hard to clean. In addition faucets andshower heads also collect hard calcium depositswhich reduce water flow and can lead to earlyreplacement.

With the Soo~Soft system, existing hard calciumdeposits are dissolved and washed away. Depositson toilets and faucets are dissolved throughnormal use after installation of the Soo~Softsystem. The life of all plumbing fixtures isextended by the Soo~Soft system.

As the Soo~Soft system works, calcium is washedaway or reduced to a fine powder that can not formstubborn hard build-up on surfaces and fixtures.Stains can now be easily be wiped away usingordinary vinegar without resorting to harshdetergents or dangerous acids.

Black MoldBlack Mold often accompanies calcium depositsin water drawn from public and private wells. Insome rural areas where water is not treated by themunicipality this may be a common condition.

This bacterial mold shows up as black stains ontoilet bowls, shower curtains, tile grout, and on theinside of shower doors. The bacteria that causesblack mold live, feed and reproduce on hard scaledeposits inside of pipes and on surfaces. In mostcases eliminating places where this bacteria growscan greatly reduce or eliminate Black Mold.

After installation of the Soo~Soft system pipesand surfaces are cleared of lime scale depositswhich the bacteria require to live and grow. As theplaces where Black Mold is found are cleaned itwill be more difficult for the mold to re-establishitself on these surfaces. It may be difficult tocompletely eliminate Black Mold in private oruntreated municipal wells. In these cases thebacteria comes from water mains or theunderground water itself and are constantly beingreplenished.

Evaporative (Swamp) CoolersEvaporative coolers blow air through cellulosepads saturated with water to cool the air passingthrough. Water with high mineral content canquickly clog evaporator pads with hard calciumdeposits which impedes air flow and reduces the

cooling capability of the unit. In these conditions,frequent replacement of evaporator pads isrequired to maintain cooling. Drain tubes andpumps within the unit will also clog with harddeposits, reducing the service life of the cooler orrequiring costly repairs.

Using softened water from the Soo~Soft Systemkeeps evaporator pads clear and keeps pump anddrain tubes scale free. Your evaporative coolingsystem will last longer, operate more efficiently,and require less-frequent service.

Supply PipesPlumbing, pumps and fixtures which becomeclogged with hard calcium can be costly to repairor replace. As lime scale accumulates, water flowthrough pipes and faucets slows, water pressure isreduced. Pipes that lay horizontally areparticularly susceptible to mineral accumulation.

In plumbing systems with heavy calcium depositsat valves and elbows. Water flowing around thesedeposits can cause pipes to vibrate or “howl”. Asthe Soo~Soft system changes these hard depositsinto soft calcium, the supply lines and plumbing

are cleared. Plumbing noise will often disappear,and water pressure will be restored to its originalstrength.

Hot Tubs and SpasLarge hot tubs or spas where water is recirculatedwill require a separate Soo~Soft system on theoutput side of the pump. In spas or whirlpools,where water is drained after each use a separateSoo~Soft unit is not necessary.

Heat creates the perfect environment for hardcalcium to form. This is why lime-scale rings areso difficult to clean from hot tubs and spas.

The Soo~Soft Digital Water Softening Systemdissolves these hard deposits. The remaining softcalcium will not stick to spa and tub walls. It easilywipes away without detergents or harshchemicals.

This softer water is also more pleasurable to bathein. Water is softened by the Soo~Soft systemeliminates the effect of being “blasted” by jets ofhard water. This can result in a longer morerelaxing bathing experience.

Swimming PoolsSwimming pools require the installation of adedicated Soo~Soft system in the waterrecirculation path. By installing the Soo~Soft unitin the pump and filter recirculation loop on thepressure side of the pump, water is continuouslysoftened as it is recirculated in the pool.

Besides keeping the pool water soft and fresh, theSoo~Soft system helps keep scale from buildingup on heating elements and pumps, and extends

the life of costly filters. Clean up of tiled surfacesat pool-side becomes a snap without hard scaledeposits.

With softer water, the amount of chemicalsrequired to “shock” the water is significantlyreduced. The pH of the water becomes more stableallowing for a more easily maintained chemicalbalance. Chemicals such as chlorine and brominecan often be reduced by 25% to 40%. Theincreased wetness of the water makes chlorine andbromine become more effective in eliminatingbacteria in the water.

Landscaping and GardensCalcium is a primary nutrient for healthy plants,lawns, flowers and trees. It is also an importantelement in soil chemistry. Calcium that has beenprocessed by the Soo~Soft Digital System nolonger forms into hard crystals that can clog thedelicate cellular system of plants. This softcalcium is more easily carried by water andabsorbed by plants. Studies have shown anincrease in growth and more robust fruit yieldfrom plants grown from water treated in thismanner.

Large calcium crystals can inhibit water uptake inplant root systems. Increased water uptake andgreater availability of soft calcium as a result ofthe effects of the Soo~Soft system have a positiveeffect on plant health by contributing to strongercellular walls and plant structure. The softer formof calcium also reduces tip burn in lawns andplants. Lawns become green and lush similar tothe effects that come from pure rainwater.

Plant growth in sandy soils with high sodiumcontent is enhanced by the Soo~Soft process. Saltsare more effectively washed from the soil due tothe increased “wetness” of the water. In soil withhigh clay content it has been reported thatmagnetically treated water helps to expand clumpsof clay into finer particles which promotes themovement of soil nutrients to plant root systemsresulting in greater nutrient uptake by the plant.

Salt-type water softening systems can actuallydamage lawns and plants with excessive salt buildup. This can accumulate and inhibit healthy plantgrowth. Vendors of salt-based softeners generallyadvise installation of a “bypass” for water used ingardening. With the Soo~Soft system there is noneed for the additional cost and installation of a“bypass”. The Soo~Soft treated water can helpyour lawn grow greener and lusher.

Sprinkler SystemsSprinkler heads (just like shower heads) canclog due to scale build-up from hard water.The Soo~Soft system will help sprinklerheads to clear existing build-up, and extendtheir useful life by keeping them scale-free.Benefits are also realized in systems withdedicated irrigation pumps. These pumps willexperience fewer failures related to mineralfouling and impeller/seal wear.

Waterfalls, Fountains, & PondsA separate Soo~Soft system will be required forrecirculating waterfalls and fountains. If theSoo~Soft unit is to be installed outside, it must be

installed into a weatherproof enclosure orenclosed pump-house to maintain reliableoperation.

Soo~Soft treated water flowing through thefountain or waterfall will dissolve existing hardcalcium deposits and unsightly waterline ringscaused by mineral deposits. Less chlorine orbromine will be required to keep water free frombacteria and algae. Once the de-scaling process iscompleted, the tendency for algae formation willbe greatly reduced or eliminated as the crystallinehard calcium is eliminated. Pumps and filters thatare used in the system will also enjoy increasedmaintenance intervals and longer life expectancywithout calcium deposits.

Algae and other forms of bacteria concentrate andbreed on the crystalline calcium deposits whichaccumulate throughout plumbing systems andalong the waterlines of ponds and waterfalls.When exposed to sunlight, these highlyconcentrated colonies reproduce rapidly, leadingto more frequent and expensive chemical controltechniques. The Soo~Soft system removes thesealgae breeding grounds and will help control algaegrowth.

Septic Systems and SewersSalt brine produced by regeneration of salt-typeion-exchange water softeners may affect privateseptic systems. Municipal waste-water treatmentsystems are also adversely affected by thesedischarges. Salt in waste-water reduces theeffectiveness of micro-organisms which arenecessary for break-down and processing ofbiological waste in both municipal treatment

systems and septic tanks. Many municipalitieshave established legislation to limit or baninstallation of new salt-type ion-exchange watersoftener systems due to these negative effects.

The Soo~Soft system produces no harmfuldischarges into the waste water system. Septicsystems work effectively to process waste becausemicro-organisms are not inhibited by chemicaldischarges. Municipal waste-water treatmentsystems operate more effectively with waterwhich is not salt-laden. This is especiallyimportant in communities where “grey” water isused for irrigation of lawns and public parks.

Filter LifeThe useful life of both reverse osmosis and carbonblock filters is affected by the amount of hardcalcium in the filtered water. Crystals of hardcalcium form inside filters and quickly clog them.Water treated with the Soo~Soft system does notclog these filters and as a result can extend theuseful life of filters in hard-water environments.Though these beneficial effects can extend the lifeof carbon block filters, they should still bereplaced at the recommended service interval.This is because of their ability to trap harmfulbacteria is depleted over time. If not changed on aregular basis they can become a breeding groundfor bacteria rather than a trap for them.

Since the Soo~Soft system does not introduce orremove anything from the water, it is just as safeand healthy as your water is today.

Softer- Healthier HairLong hair is especially prone to accumulation ofhard calcium deposits. As these deposits remainon hair, they can contribute to cracking andbreaking of hair fibers. Hair that is coated withlime-scale deposits can be difficult to manage.One common problem is “frizzing” in humidweather. This hard coating acts as a shell whichcan limit the effectiveness of hair conditioners andkeep them from being absorbed into hair.

With salt-type ion-exchange softeners, sodiumcontent in water is elevated. While this water mayhave less abrasive properties, increased sodiumcontent can cause skin dryness and other skinirritations.

Minerals and Medical ConsiderationsPeople need calcium. It is a critical mineral inperforming countless cellular functions. TheSoo~Soft water softener breaks down the hardcalcium into a form that is more easily absorbedinto the body’s cellular system. In contrast, thesalt-type water softeners replace calcium andmagnesium with salt. Physicians report that toomuch salt is being consumed by people today. Aindividual on a low-salt diet can benefit greatly bythe use of a Soo~Soft System as compared to asalt-based system.

Both calcium and magnesium bind to the samesites as many toxic elements such as lead andcadmium. When the calcium and magnesium fillsthese locations, the sites no longer absorb the leadand cadmium, and their toxic effects on the bodyare greatly reduced.

Calcium seems to have a calming effect on somepeople and decreases neural and muscularexcitability as well as coronary hypertension. Thisis the reason a glass of warm milk often works formany individuals as a sleep aid. The calcium in aliquid form works quickly to calm the system.

Calcium that has been processed by the Soo~SoftWater Softener System is more biologicallyavailable. In its softer form it has the consistencyof fine talcum powder. This form is six times moresoluble in water than in the hard calcium form. Asthe human body is composed of over 90% water,the calcium absorption is increased dramatically.

Dental HealthCalcium in its hard form collects on teeth bothabove and below the gums. The electrical chargepresent in conventional water helps bacteria andcalculus (plaque) formation. Just as the pipes arede-scaled by the Soo~Soft Water SoftenerSystemize hard periodontal calculus can also bereduced with daily irrigation. Studies have showna reduction in periodontal calculus (hard calcium)of up to 42% has been achieved with twice-dailyirrigation using magnetically treated water.

Water Quality

Water from large municipalities is usually treatedfor bacteria and monitored on a regular basis forpurity and safety. Owners of private or communitywells must look after these issues on their own orwith the help of a local well contractor.

Iron Bacteria In Well WaterOne of the most common complaints from ownersof private wells is bacterial iron or “rust.” Thisiron mixes with the hard calcium and causes it tostick to all surfaces. Toilet bowls, sinks, coffeemakers and dishes all can become encrusted withyellow/brown iron/calcium stains. The Soo~SoftDigital Water Softening System will break downcalcium deposits, making it easier to clean thesestains from surfaces, but will not kill the ironbacteria.

Use of salt based water softeners in conjunctionwith special “iron out” type of salt is ofteneffective in killing this bacteria.

Shocking Your WellAnother method of killing the bacterial iron in aprivate well is known as “Shocking” the well. Thisis similar to the shock treatment given to aswimming pool. In some cases this can be donewith chlorine tablets that can be dropped into thewell. This process will kill many forms of bacteriaother than iron and has many benefits for ownersof private wells.When this method is used, it isimportant that well water be tested after this

procedure to assure that chlorine levels are safe.Contact your local well contractor for thisprocedure or search the world wide web under“shock well.”

Sediments in WaterSome forms of iron in water are actually ironsediments. These can be filtered using a charcoalblock filter. (See Filters Below for Installation)

Filters for Pure WaterThe two primary types of pure water filterscommonly in use today are Carbon Block andReverse Osmosis. Both act to remove sedimentsfrom the water. Carbon block filters are used toremove many types of harmful bacteria fromwater such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia Cysts.These filters help to remove sulfides, (rotten eggsmell) and chlorine. The result is cleaner, freshertasting water.

Extreme Calcium Content in WaterIn some circumstances, available water may haveextremely high mineral content. This water maycause more serious water quality issues, especiallywhen this water is used in dishwashers and otherappliances. This water is most often found in areasthat rely on shallow wells or where the water isdrawn from areas that were previously oceanbottom. The calcium content of water is often so

high in these areas that dishes will come out withcalcium deposits even with the use of productslike Glass MagicTM or with commercial dishwasherchemicals designed for use with hard water.

In these cases it may be necessary to use a salt-based system to remove some of the calcium in thewater before the Soo~Soft System is used. TheSoo~Soft unit will then convert the remaininghard calcium to its softer state and provide all ofthe other benefits previously described in thisguide. In these cases be sure to install theSoo~Soft System after the salt-based softeneraccording to the following instructions.

Use With a Salt-Based SystemIn cases where water has a high calcium content orIron (“rust”) color/taste is a problem, a salt-basedion-exchange water softener may providefavorable results used in conjunction with theSoo~Soft System. This combined approach willimprove the softness of water in these extremewater quality situations.

When both the Soo~Soft System and salt-basedsofteners are used, the coil for the Soo~SoftSystem MUST be installed on the OUTPUTside of the salt-based system.

DO NOT INSTALL THE COIL BEFORETHE SALT BASED SYSTEM, THIS WILLDE-SCALE THE SALT SYSTEM AND ITWILL RELEASE LARGE QUANITIES OFCALCIUM INTO THE PLUMBINGSYSTEM.

Technology

CalciumCalcium is found in water the world over. Aswater moves through rocks in rivers and streams itpicks up calcium from deposits left by ancient seaand land animals. This dissolved calcium buildsup in water until it reaches a point where the waterbecomes calcium-saturated. As the calciumcontinues to travel with the water, calciummolecules begins to aggregate forming solidcrystals that grow longer and longer and begin tostick together. These crystals are abrasive and wethen experience the water as “hard.” This hardwater also irritates skin when we bathe or showerand fouls plumbing and appliances.

Money Back GuaranteeFor a period of six months following the purchaseof the Soo~Soft Digital Water Softener System, ifyou are not completely satisfied with the productfor any reason, you may return the system for afull refund of the purchase price, less any freightor handling charges. We ask that you have had itinstalled and working for a period of at least threemonths for it to have reached its maximumeffectiveness before returning the product.

5 Year WarrantyIf your Soo~Soft water softener becomesinoperative within a period of five years from thedate of purchase, at our option, we will repair orreplace the unit at no charge to you with theexception of freight charges. Replaced units maybe new or factory reconditioned units.

During this period we will only cover the repair orreplacement cost of the unit.
